He hasn't produced in the last couple of games but he's still effective:

Lehkonen had a team-high five shots on net, two hits and one blocked shot in Wednesday's 4-3 overtime loss to the jets.

Newhook needs to be tried on the wing with one of Mackinnon/Rantanen to see if that works. Otherwise I don’t really know what to do with him right now. I know they’re adamant on him being the answer to the 2C eventually but there has to come a point where they stop forcing that if it isn’t working.

He’s been able to make quick plays in the offensive zone when they already have the puck and are circling the ozone with speed but that’s about all he’s been able to do. I’d honestly try him on the wing with Mackinnon to see if they can generate some chemistry doing exactly that. He hasn’t earned a promotion by any means but he’s just not going to contribute anything if he doesn’t have someone to make plays with in the ozone because he is reliant on others.

This lineup misses Burakovsky so much.
Funny how everyone ragged Bura non-stop and now we see the lineup without him and his 50-60 pts and we wish we had anything close to him on the 2nd line.

Between Bura, Kadri and Landy we are missing 207 points from last year. And we are asking Newhook to replace Kadri, Rodrigues to replace Bura and we didn't get anyone to replace Landy's missing production so I guess 4th line scrub to replace him.

We'll be lucky to get 100 pts out Newhook, Rodrigues and random 4th liner and 30 games of Landy.

We have a large problem, I know it's early but it very evident and needs to be addressed quickly can't wait until January or later.

Yup... all of this.

I'd add the missing of Kadri too... basically the Avs lost a 2nd line that was a large positive and have replaced it with a 3rd line quality line (and I might be generous there), which is naturally getting caved. Kadri and Burkie had faults, but they made the 2nd line a force (especially last year) where the Avs could consistently dominate the opposition's top lines. So from there the Avs just had to have the 3rd and 4th lines play well enough and limit the damage. Now that the Avs are losing the 2nd line battle, you have much more pressure to deal with in the defensive zone. This is allowing some cracks to show. Not that the Avs are a bad team now, that's not the case at all. It is that there are a lot more ways to attack the Avs and neutralize the attack through possession.

One thing I'm a little shocked by and concerned with is how bad some of the defensive coverage is. Too many battles are being lost in the defensive zone... and this is really everyone except Nuke. A number of guys who are having 'good' games are having major lapses in coverage which is compounding the issue of weaker lines as it leads to a bunch of defensive zone time where the Avs are getting scrambly. I'm going to be curious as to how Bednar deals with this. If these mistakes keep coming up and the Avs keep getting pinned... are the issues correctable through system? Or will they require the Avs to avoid getting pinned in the first place? The latter is much harder to solve.

Yeah it's called move Girard. 5M instantly appears. Throw in Newhook and it's basically 6M, and if you can get some retention it's no problem.

I'd be dangling a package of G, Newhook, 1st around the league. Should be plenty to get a legit 2C and some retention.

It's win now mode, can't wait and hope the Newhook turns into something, G has become redundant and a 1st is a 1st.
I'm also in favor of trading Girard, but what me and you say, is useless because the Avs management don't want to trade him

Not only is ERod shitty hes also insanely ugly.
I mean this is nothing new to the Avs. We had this dude on the team for a short while.

They might not have a choice, can't pay 5M to guy playing 15ish mins a night (played more last night when Toews missed 2/3rds of the 3rd period) on the 3rd pair. Especially can't do that when the forwards are this shitty. Can't survive with 4 competent forwards, It simply isn't going to work.

Got to get a legit 2C that can bump players into more appropriate roles.

Definitely. I feel like he was a little under appreciated by Avs fans but he was a great player to have on the team and he’s also doing pretty well now with Seattle

I said the same thing last year about losing Donskoi and Saad. We had a bad start last year too.

Obviously losing Kadri and Bura is a lot worse than losing Saad and Donkey Brains (and no Landy is bad too), but I remember the Fire Bednar thread was in full force early last year. I'm not ready to panic yet, but at the same time I do think they'll have to make an actual trade at some point.

Again, I agree. Let's tell Sakic and MacFarland that. I think we should just trust those dudes because they just won the cup

I'm one of those who kept sh**ting on Bura and took lightly him going FA but man I miss his zone entries and scoring abilities. Right now the 2nd line doesn't even look better than our 3rd and 4th line. Back to being a 1 line team again. I think it might be time to separate Mack and Rants.

So now we're missing Burakovsky, eh?

Interesting.
We were always going to. Lots of fans just kept seeing his mistakes (and quite frankly, an exaggerated narrative of him being soft and useless if he wasn't scoring) but kept taking for granted that Bura was actually a really good 2nd liner who consistently produced 50+ pts every year.

I mean considering we replaced him Erod so obviously.

I don’t see why Bura can’t be a frustrating player, but also clearly an important part of what made this team successful.

And this is coming from one of the guys who was probably the most against trading for him.

I always liked Burakovsky. Guy was our one man secondary scoring threat and secondary zone entry plan for a while before Kadri and Nuke went off last year.

With Landy out, the Avs are missing an entire scoring line's worth of forwards from last year. Very good ones too. That's gonna hurt no matter what.

It's funny but 3-on-3 runs completely counter to Nathan MacKinnon's game. You'd think it wouldn't but it does. His game is predicated on finding/creating space that isn't there, weaving through gaps and bulldozing his way through defenders. You can see he tries that in OT and it usually leads to disaster--there's all this wide open space and he tries jamming himself in between three guys to make a play of some sort. Meanwhile, guys like Nuke (and before him, EJ) say "Holy shit, lookit all this open space" and they use it to their advantage.

Anyway, I was largely impressed with last night's effort after that atrocious 1st period. It's a good sign when the team doesn't lay down after a bad start, I think they'll work out the kinks eventually. And so far, I'm mostly good with Georgiev--he's made a whole lot of big stops when he needs too, and his rebound control isn't great, but it isn't nearly as scary as Kuemper's was.

Kaut turning into a useful forward would be a big help. Hopefully he can build from here rather than regress to what we saw last year

Encouraging that the Avs turned it around halfway through that game. I thought the Nuke-Compher-Kaut line looked particularly good the second half of the game. I hope they give that line a few more games to see how it goes.

They need to get Newhook and Rodrigues away from each other. Their games aren't meshing at all.
Ya this is key. I hope they put newhook with nuke and Kaut and see how that goes.

Another night where I cant fault Georgiev. The defense has been subpar. Manson was horrible last night. Avs getting hemmed in for long stretches is not something im used to nor want to get used to.

If he can produce at NAK level you take it and run.
