Sounds like he viewed the Fletcher/Briere/Jonesy Flyers as dysfunctional.

Does Gauthier regret telling Flyers brass that he was ‘built to be a Flyer’ after they selected him in 2022?

“No, not at all. Getting drafted in the NHL was a dream come true. I never would have thought I’d be in the position I am today with everything that has transpired. It was one of the best days of my life, being drafted in the NHL. It’s everything you’ve worked for, everything you’ve dreamed of and I definitely wasn’t going to say the wrong things in that specific time. I was just super excited that they believed in me at the fifth overall spot. But with a handful of situations occurring after the time I was drafted, I had to make a decision that was best for my future.”

He doesn’t want to play for a steaming pile shithole organization that’s had people in it and its fans at war with each other for a decade. It took until the time he was drafted for anyone else to figure that out, much less him.
Or he really liked the last GM. lol…

Would have thought he would have done some research before the draft…as you say it’s been a decade.

No, I'm looking at this through the lens of the fact that it's unlikely a kid whose dream is to play in thr nhl, is a top draft pick, just decided he didn't want to play for the Flyers on a whim.

I have a hard time believing he woke up one day and just said "you know what. f*** them guys." I'll admit it's possible, but doesn't seem likely. I have to think something caused a deterioration, and it could have been both parties, I don't know.

What my issue is is this backlash that he's not allowed to make this call. Does it suck for us? Sure. But again, I have a hard time thinking it was something simple that made him say he wasn't going to sign here, but it could be.

I also take issue in general with the notion that just because the Flyers drafted him he has to be 100% loyal to them. It's a job and he should have a say - to aome degree - in where he does and doesn't want to work.
I do think he owed them an explanation, given that he "seduced" them into drafting him by seeming to be enthusiastic about playing for them, had he expressed reservations, they probably would have taken Jiricek, and he'd have gone #6, which would have cost him nothing (except being drafted by CBJ). This isn't the NFL or NBA or MLB, where draft slots have economic consequences.

So I think what upsets the Flyers I think was the deception, whether deliberate or just impulsive, which screwed with their decision making. And the unwillingness to even talk. There's a certain prima donna aspect to this (well, I thought it over and changed my mind but I won't even do an exit interview because after misleading them, I owe them nothing).

well i'll just say im sad for flyer fans, i feel your pain from way back when gaborik refused to re-sign in mn. i ripped his name off my jersey (sweater) and replaced it with DANO. it should be an honor to play for any nhl team. cheers.

Maybe he was excited to join, and then things changed.

For years you were adamant Fletcher was a good GM. Recently you said he left a steaming pile of shit for Briere. You changed your opinion based on things that changed over time. There's no reason to think Gauthier couldnt do the same.

Don't you think that there's a chance that Briere saying that they never gave a reason is just GM speak?

Gauthier's representatives have also said that they talked to the Flyers at least in December in Colorado and in Sweden. You combine that with the fact that they've talked about the trade scenarios for months now. It wasn't radio silence.

I don’t see many people saying that he doesn’t have the right to pursue what he believes is in his self-interest. He’s absolutely entitled to do that, for whatever reason he chooses.

Maybe he really did look at the organization and say “I want no part of that steaming pile of shit”. But how much better is the Ducks org? Fresh off a last-in-the-NHL season, they haven’t made the playoffs since 2017-18. I’m sure they’ll be pretty good in a few years, but it’s hard to look at this and say “Gauthier only wanted to go to an organization that he had confidence in” or “Gauthier wanted to go to an organization that would maximize his value”. The reasons just seem much more arbitrary than that.

Which, again, is totally fine! I’m not demanding Gauthier have a good reason. It’s just that spinning this into a grievance with the Flyers reaping the rewards of some unique organizational dysfunction seems like contorting the circumstances to fit your personal despair as a Flyers fan.

In sum:

1. Gauthier adamantly didn’t want to be a Flyer.
2. Gauthier was once OK with being a Flyer.
3. That’s all OK.
4. That’s also a bit strange. Perhaps justifiable, but definitely strange.

The odd breakdown communication is also an ancillary factor, with perhaps blame lying with both parties. But IMO, predominantly with the side forcing the issue.

No, we’re thrilled. Gauthier was overrated as hell.

He’s the Jalen Hurts of the NHL.

Money has soured stronger relationships than Cutter and the Flyers. He was probably excited to be drafted though it was to a team he didn’t like. After the initial excitement, he probably wasn’t thrilled drafted by a team he didn’t like. Then the ELC stuff. Plenty of strong friendships and romances have ended over petty money squabbles. There probably isn’t interesting dirt behind the scenes here

Top Ten New Theories Why Cutter Gauthier Didn't Want to Play for the Flyers Anymore:

1) Cutter is scared of Gritty.
2) Cutter hates burnt orange, loved neon orange.
3) Cutter was confused and concerned as to why the hell the Flyers elevated their color guy into their team president.
4) Cutter reads HF Flyers. Bought into the hivemind's pessimism.
5) Whilst reading HF Flyers, Cutter learned of the existences of @Lord Defect and @Striiker. Decided he could not be part of an organization in any way affiliated with such defectiveness, and is a firm believer that hot dogs are not sandwiches.
6) Cutter really admires Chuck Fletcher. Especially his hair.
7) Also whilst reading HF Flyers, Cutter came across Beef's food takes. ::shudder::
8) A Flyers insider sent him a creepy request for a personal photo, something to do with a new pillow. ::shudder::
9) Observed that lots of players tend to do better once they leave the Flyers.

and finally...

10) He just wanted to live up to hostagejoe's Eric Lindros comp.

If Eliot Friedmann's comments are relevant/cogent, I think Gauthier did not like Briere's and Torts
"process", that you have to earn a spot on the Flyer's roster, plus he probably hated the idea of the Flyers not to expend a year on the ELC and had to play another year at BC.

For me, the kid can rot in hell for all I care, besides, I was never comfortable with him as a Flyer.

Now Barkey is the kind of Flyer I applaud....ahhhh......je ne sais quoi
