The Flyers played 20 games after the deadline. That means they paid JvR ~$1.7 million over that time. I can't look back at salary history to be sure, but that should have covered the $1.2 million they did end up with, and Gauthier would have only caused an overage on any bonuses he actually earned.
Weren’t they using LTIR? So it would’ve pushed money to this year…when they need to compete for the playoffs lol

I am already over all this

Honestly, this shit is draining, and until we actually wait for any kind of answers, if any come, then it's not worth fussing over. It's a wait and see type of deal and I hope both players pan out. If anything, this might be the first offensive-first D-man that can easily QB a PP we've had since prime Ghost. Hell, possibly since even prime Timonen. So both teams should be excited, regardless of the bullshit that happened on the backend.

A question, listening to the commentators on the Canadian networks they seem to believe that Gauthier is close to a generational prospect. Was that being said before yesterday? Or just the media being the media. Basically saying even if Drysdale becomes a #1, which he could, they are going to look back at this being a very bad day in the organization’s history losing a player of this magnitude.

DC media was labeling him as the best prospect in the country.

None of this was said before yesterday.

Gauthier's agent saying it is a "private family matter."

GTFOH with that cop out.
Wow. What could that be? They are Pen fans. Lol.
Someone speculated/heard that they thought the fan base in Philly would be too hard on the kid. But won’t come out and say that obviously. Who knows.

Your opinion…to dump on the Flyers or the media loving a story?

Entirely possible. I can't recall their cap situation at the end of the year, and 1.2 million seems a lot for a team with so few players on ELCs. Even still, they would only have a bonus overage if Gauthier actually made the performance bonus thresholds. Gauthier would have been unlikely to make any of the bonuses, so I'm not sure why this would have even been an issue.

This expands quite a bit on todays hotly debated "cap overage" discussion and frames it as merely speculation on Friedmans part. Thats why I didnt want to get involved in that argument.
Friedman said as much on Marek's show that that was the best reasoning he heard among his sources and not necessarily a concrete reason. It would be the first of its kind really. I'm not minimizing the money he may have missed out on in the short term, but it's just really odd that if this were such a sticking point...the possible alternative is playing four years of college hockey, pushing his potential earnings down the road, and missing out on 2-3 years of NHL pay and reaching free agency sooner? It doesn't add up. And he would have walked right into 1st line and PP1 opportunities which is going to increase your earning potential more than anything else. We're only really hearing one side of the story right now, but it has to be more egregious than not signing him immediately after his freshman season. And if we are being honest, he wasn't so good last year that he had to be in the NHL. Logan Cooley was and even he signed with Arizona, with all of their uncertainty as a franchise, and not playing any NHL games last year.

Dump on the Flyers. Absolutely. They were delighting in the Flyers getting screwed and embellished it like we'd just missed a Crosby. Dripping with smugness.

A couple games back I nearly asked @MiamiScreamingEagles in a GDT if the Flyers have been irrelevant for long enough that fans, media, and hockey officials will forget their rage about the Flyers being meanies half a century ago.

Got my answer. No. Nobody is forgetting. The Eagles collapse has been met with less dripping smug delight on the same station. It's wild.

So true. I was just watching Overdrive on TSN and 2 of the guys were basically calling him a generational talent. The Flyers were expecting him and Michkov to carve up the league for the next decade.
I like him as a player as some do. But whats being said about him is wild.

Also exhibit A in why declaring the rebuild over, which you can bet your ass they did… is so stupid after a couple of top 5 picks.

Don’t doubt that we are full steam ahead because Couturier showed he can be 1C still.

It’s ohh so predictable.

A couple more trades, and an FA signing or two - and we are good. Same old bullshit.

Moving Gauthier should have been a step back, but they found a way to get “nhl ready talent” - which I am sure was a must have.

Cutting corners as always.

cuz they were never rebuilding...

People complain because the team hasn’t done anything yet to indicate they have learned from past mistakes and are going to build a real contender

Right after the Flyers lose a top prospect in embarrassing fashion is a weird time to whine that the board is too negative. If you want rose colored glasses and Tortorella cultists, try Facebook or Reddit.
Why can't you just enjoy the wins?
