Not the first two. This should end the great tankathon agreement. Pretty solid proof why it doesn't work in the NHL.
Multiple insiders have mentioned Zegras as being available. Did they even bring this up to Torts?
What is short sighted about this move? How does this hurt Cutter now or in the future? He gets booed when he comes to Philly?I know it’s fun to pile on the Flyers, but I’m honestly struggling to fully pin this situation on them. Gauthier’s motivations seem shortsighted at best with this ELC stuff and his issues with the coach and GM and going radio silent is a punk move.
I was 100% against his hiring and still am, but does anyone actually believe Tortorella is here for the long haul? How long would he even be his coach? A year or two max?
I have to believe this is more about the contract than anything else.
Now I will fully criticize Briere for this shitty trade return. I won’t be gaslit into thinking f***ing Jamie Drysdale is anything other than an injured bust who’s looked mostly overmatched in the NHL and will likely never be a foundational piece. When a common phrase from Ducks fans is “made of glass” you know you’re in for trouble. This trade blows.
Did the Flyers make him go back for a second season? Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reported that after the May 2023 WCs, the Flyers wanted to try and sign him. Instead, his camp called and instead of negotiating a contract, told them he wasn't interested in signing with the Flyers. Kurz said that the Flyers thought it was (BC coach) Greg Brown who encouraged Gauthier to stay in college and improve his game. It was hard to confirm according to Kurz because Gauthier wasn't communicating with them. It's not the same thing though. Could it have been elaborated on with more detail instead of just assuming the details would be known, sure and for that I apologize.
I won't say it's standard operating procedure with these types of kids but it's pretty close to it. They'll sign with the NHL team after their NCAA season concludes in order to burn a year off of their ELC and get NHL experience. With them not doing that at that point (March of '22) and proceeding to make him go back to school for the 22-23 season that would put him at signing at the conclusion of their season this year and burning an ELC this year which is not something that Gauthier agreed to.
They supposedly haven't talked since the World Championships which was a month or two after his college season ended. It lines up logically with the proposed scenario.
why would the ducks make a lateral move when there's a glaring weakness in the forward positions.Multiple insiders have mentioned Zegras as being available. Did they even bring this up to Torts?
You didn't answer my question.Sabres didn't draft smart players.
Maybe they would have been more willing to communicate if the organization didn't lie to Cutter about signing him after one year.Yeah. $2M in career earnings is huge for a player who has accumulated nothing to date. Nothing is guaranteed for these players, and it’s insane to think they don’t have a right to use the leverage they have available.
My beef is not with Gauthier’s decision — he’s not a punk for wanting to play elsewhere or wanting to maximize his earnings — but rather with the total break down in communication. And even that is on his advisors and representatives less than Gauthier himself. Being a conduit to professionally communicate between player and organization is all they are there for in the first place. It’s inexcusable to not take a meeting to clearly communicate CG’s intentions with Briere and Jones.
Going back for the second season or not is irrelevant to the money though if they're signing after the conclusion of the 22-23 NHL Season.Did the Flyers make him go back for a second season? Why Gauthier decided to completely cut off communications is something that's only speculation. Nobody knows why because Gauthier hasn't spoken.
For those with access: Flyers, prevented from talking to Cutter Gauthier, still don’t know what went wrong
Lot of smoke Verbeek wasn’t too fond of the negotiations with Zegras. If you’re not a fan of the player, swapping out his 5.75 for a 5th overall pick on an ELC is pretty valuable. Resets the window if nothing else.why would the ducks make a lateral move when there's a glaring weakness in the forward positions.
That's about as credible as Allstar ballots, how many of those players have first hand experience with Torts - they go off rumor and media. I mean we've seen AV and Torts, which would you prefer to play for? A lot of Torts' reputation comes from his handling of the media, he doesn't have much patience with stupid reporters - and we know most in Philly are stupid, and I suspect a similar ratio around the league. AV was a smoother character with the media, until he left and we found out what a schmuck he was. Q was probably a preferred HC, until of course we found out what moral scum he really was.I mean, Torts was voted the coach that players around the league would least like to play for multiple times.
There is more than just a shred of truth to him not being generally well liked as a coach.
200+ players in The Athletics polls... 30% said Torts was the coach they would least want to play for.

Kevin Kurz debunked the "we wouldn't sign him" in his article on the Athletic today. Apparently, the Flyers would have signed him but it was his desire to go back to BC, not the Flyers. The only way he said he'd sign with the Flyers is if they guaranteed him an NHL roster spot, and the Flyers apparently responded saying if he earns it they'll make room but there's no guarantee.I don’t think Cutter really cares whether you think it’s a good look for him.
We don’t know his exact reason, but it seems like it was either us not honoring his pre-draft request to play only one year of college hockey and start burning ELC years from the jump, or the prospect of playing for a coach who has treated other young skilled forwards in a manner that is not most conducive to their development.
Either of those reasons would directly impact Cutter’s career trajectory and his earnings potential. So who the hell exactly are you to think you can tell him it’s a “bad look” that he used the rights afforded to him by the CBA?
Maybe they would have been more willing to communicate if the organization didn't lie to Cutter about signing him after one year.
People usually don't like it when you lie to their face. That sort of lying is about as unprofessional as it gets.
I believe the timeline is that May of '23 during the World Championships he informed them that he did not want to sign with them.So here's something that doesn't make much sense to me.
Flyers stated that Gauthier told them he didn't want to sign with them a few months after being drafted. But, there are reports out there that Gauthier was willing to sign after 1 year of college, and when the Flyers didn't sign him that's when the relationship went bad. Both of those are conflicting in terms of timeline to me. It just doesn't make sense.
Am I missing something?
That doesn’t even make sense. There was a new GM in place. Any decent player representative should make it priority #1 to make sure the plans have not changed vis-a-vis their client.Maybe they would have been more willing to communicate if the organization didn't lie to Cutter about signing him after one year.

I get what you mean, but plenty of players have NMCs.Now, keeping in mind the media is running rampant with rumors, *IF* the above is true, then I'd say good riddance. No player is ever guaranteed a spot in the NHL, on any team. That's a terrible thing to set precedent on.

Yes, that makes sense. But, unless I misunderstood briere, he said they first found out 2 months after drafting him, so this started back in 2022...That is if you believe Briere and the Flyers.I believe the timeline is that May of '23 during the World Championships he informed them that he did not want to sign with them.
If that is to be the issue at hand it falls to the they didn't sign him at the conclusion of the '23 BC season (March) to burn an ELC year.
It lines up if you look at it that way.
Nobody saw the worst PP team in the league again being the worst PP team in the league?Seeler and Walker have probably tripled their value by their play this year. Tippet was poised for a breakout year being given top line duties and lots of PP time. It would have been stupid to trade him last year. I don't think many saw us having a 10% powerplay
One day I'll be able to once again use the laughing emoji on your postsYour avatar is a Goalie who famously requested a trade because he didn’t want to sit on the bench. As was his right.
I'll have to go back and see if I can find that. I thought it was reported as '23 WC but maybe that was just the last time he talked to them.Yes, that makes sense. But, unless I misunderstood briere, he said they first found out 2 months after drafting him, so this started back in 2022...That is if you believe Briere and the Flyers.

NMC's don't mean you can't get scratched. Just means you can't be moved.I get what you mean, but plenty of players have NMCs.
