Exceptionally gifted skater, above average puck skills, breaks out of the D-zone under pressure with ease. Solid hockey IQ. Lacks elite offensive upside in part due to a below average shot, which is probably attributable to his shoulder (at least for now). Plays very good defense for an undersized defenseman. Uses his stick well and takes really good angles. Surprisingly physical. Now that I am sick to my stomach, make me feel better....thoughts on Jamie Drysdale?
Yeah. I think maybe the teens. You probably don’t get a potentially high end 18-21 year old Dman w/o the injury concerns for Cutter. I am pleased with the move all in all. We don’t know what else was offered and he wasn’t going to sign anyway. Who knows what the trade will look like in hindsight but at the moment Briere did fineI don’t think anyone can handicap that since it requires knowing exactly who is available and how much the team on the clock values their top ranked player relative to Gauthier.
But for size, it’s instructive that Montreal allegedly turned down the 5th overall pick this year (Reinbacher) for him.
The flyers took this return because the player is already in the NHL. The answer is easy to figure out because they can't stop cutting corners. Its in their DNA
Drysdale is not close to being a legit top pair defender yet, he has the potential for sure, but he's definitely not there yet, and I like the kid, but saying he's a legit top pair is a bit extremeYou guys 100% won this trade, ive followed Jamie Drysdale since his early steps in the OHL,
he is a legit 1st d pair guy, 100%, you will love him. Gauthier is overrated.
he has 100% elite offensive skill, you'll see, he'll be awesome QB for your PP, also for 5 on 5Exceptionally gifted skater, above average puck skills, breaks out of the D-zone under pressure with ease. He's a good one.
With all the downsiides mentioned, Drysdale is still an absolute asset on the blueline. Clear top4Anyone else reminded of Tippett? Looks busy, substance often lacking. Flyers kryptonite.
remember what happened with Shea Theodore?,..Drysdale is not close to being a legit top pair defender yet, he has the potential for sure, but he's definitely not there yet, and I like the kid, but saying he's a legit top pair is a bit extreme
I’m just trying to consider what alternative trade may have even been worth considering. A package in return would have been trash because we’d be getting inferior pieces, by definition. A 1st round pick this year probably wouldn’t have been great asset management given that it’s unlikely we’d have gotten a top 5 pick, or even top 10. So the basis for the trade had to be a young defender, and there are only a small handful I can think of who would have been suitable based on pedigree/value.
Reinbacher? Rejected at the draft apparently.
Brandt Clarke? Unlikely given LA’s roster and him about to get called up.
Jiricek? Doubt Columbus would consider it.
Edvinsson? Doesn’t make sense for Detroit.
Just seems like this was making the best of a bad situation. Conditional on Gauthier needing to be traded, I struggle to see what alternative is worth me getting mad at anyone over (other than Gauthier).
I've watched just about every single one of his games for the Ducks. Perhaps we have a different interpretation of elite.he has 100% elite offensive skill, you'll see, he'll be awesome QB for your PP, also for 5 on 5
Do we know Zellweger was on the table?Obviously they weren't getting Mintyukov, but all of this hinges on whether you'd rather have Zellweger or Drysdale. The former would have played better in prospecting circles. The latter in mainstream ones.
I don't either. It saves them from having to deal with a Ben SImmons fiasco in the public, but you can extract value by negotiating through the media (isn't that supposed to be an asset of Keith Jones?) among other things. Not so sure I buy that word getting out he doesn't want to be here would be such a big deal. He'd still be a prized commodity with a lot of bidders to drive the price up
Yeah, it only makes the player look better. If Cutter went against his draft day word, yeah that's pretty shitty (although kids will say anything to go high in the draft), but he has leverage and used it. Adults trashing a kid's decision is pretty low. Maybe look in the mirror and fgure out why he might not want to sign here.Just when I thought this organization couldn't get any more amateur hour, they invite the coach and CEO of Spectacor on the broadcast to trash a college kid who didn't want to sign with the team. It really is theatre.
If he was traded at the draft, what pick could’ve he gotten back potentially?
I can’t imagine that either side of this deal nets you a 5OV or top 4-7 pick.I don’t think anyone can handicap that since it requires knowing exactly who is available and how much the team on the clock values their top ranked player relative to Gauthier.

If it's true Gauthier didn't want to play for Torts, I don't want him - because what probably turned him off was knowing he'd be expected to play defense and not just be a "star" who shoots. Ten minutes of research on the internet would reveal that's the biggest problem playing for Torts, he expects two way play and to play hard all the time. If Gauthier doesn't want to be pushed to be a two way power forward and prefers to be the next Hayes, big forward who just wants to play offense and not hit anyone or back check, screw him. Generation Z snowflake!
Seriously, we traded one weakness (LW) for another weakness (RHD), and got a high 2nd rd pick in return (anyone expect Anaheim to be a playoff team in 2025?). About the best Briere could have made out of a bad situation.
Your problem is that you assume your assumptions are correct (regarding the first paragraph). If it's true Gauthier didn't want to play for Torts, I don't want him - because what probably turned him off was knowing he'd be expected to play defense and not just be a "star" who shoots. He pulled a Bartleby the scrivener, "I'd prefer not to".
Yeah I’d imagine teams would want true centers and defensemen that high. Most teams probably view Gauthier as a winger or maybe a 2c and that probably plays into offersI can’t imagine that either side of this deal nets you a 5OV or top 4-7 pick.
Based off of my draft watchings this is a pretty good way of expressing my feelings toward him. Amazing skater that left you thinking there was more meat on the bone. I know people are going to have Phil Myers like reactions when they see him skate in his first game. That's a good tool to have in your kit obviously, but you need to be able to leverage it and combine it with actual hockey skill to reach the upper limits of your ceiling.Anyone else reminded of Tippett? Looks busy, substance often lacking. Flyers kryptonite.
I know what happened but it's definitely fair to say he's not there yetremember what happened with Shea Theodore?,..
