Now that I am sick to my stomach, make me feel better....thoughts on Jamie Drysdale?
Exceptionally gifted skater, above average puck skills, breaks out of the D-zone under pressure with ease. Solid hockey IQ. Lacks elite offensive upside in part due to a below average shot, which is probably attributable to his shoulder (at least for now). Plays very good defense for an undersized defenseman. Uses his stick well and takes really good angles. Surprisingly physical.

He's a good one.

I don’t think anyone can handicap that since it requires knowing exactly who is available and how much the team on the clock values their top ranked player relative to Gauthier.

But for size, it’s instructive that Montreal allegedly turned down the 5th overall pick this year (Reinbacher) for him.
Yeah. I think maybe the teens. You probably don’t get a potentially high end 18-21 year old Dman w/o the injury concerns for Cutter. I am pleased with the move all in all. We don’t know what else was offered and he wasn’t going to sign anyway. Who knows what the trade will look like in hindsight but at the moment Briere did fine

Love how the same people who were trashing Gauthier are now fluffing him.

Traded 5th rd 2022 pick for 6th rd 2020 pick.
2nd rd pick will probably be in the 30s, gives us (3) 2025 2nds (CBJ will almost certainly push that pick into 2025).

Gauthier failed to show he's a 1C at BC or WJC. He's going to be a good top six forward, maybe a 1LW or 2C, but we have Farabee. Drysdale will be a top 4 D-man, maybe our PP QB. Best of an awkward situation. We needed a RHD and 1C, between Drysdale and Bonk, good start, figure if we add some more picks we draft at least one D-man this draft.

It also suggests that Walker will soon be on the trade block, Drysdale's skill package is redundant with Walker, fast undersized RHD. So figure a 2024 2nd at the very least. And Briere is going to sell at the TDL and add more picks.

You guys 100% won this trade, ive followed Jamie Drysdale since his early steps in the OHL,
he is a legit 1st d pair guy, 100%, you will love him. Gauthier is overrated.
Drysdale is not close to being a legit top pair defender yet, he has the potential for sure, but he's definitely not there yet, and I like the kid, but saying he's a legit top pair is a bit extreme

he has 100% elite offensive skill, you'll see, he'll be awesome QB for your PP, also for 5 on 5

I’m just trying to consider what alternative trade may have even been worth considering. A package in return would have been trash because we’d be getting inferior pieces, by definition. A 1st round pick this year probably wouldn’t have been great asset management given that it’s unlikely we’d have gotten a top 5 pick, or even top 10. So the basis for the trade had to be a young defender, and there are only a small handful I can think of who would have been suitable based on pedigree/value.

Reinbacher? Rejected at the draft apparently.

Brandt Clarke? Unlikely given LA’s roster and him about to get called up.

Jiricek? Doubt Columbus would consider it.

Edvinsson? Doesn’t make sense for Detroit.

Just seems like this was making the best of a bad situation. Conditional on Gauthier needing to be traded, I struggle to see what alternative is worth me getting mad at anyone over (other than Gauthier).

Obviously they weren't getting Mintyukov, but all of this hinges on whether you'd rather have Zellweger or Drysdale. The former would have played better in prospecting circles. The latter in mainstream ones.

Do we know Zellweger was on the table?

Not so sure I buy that word getting out he doesn't want to be here would be such a big deal. He'd still be a prized commodity with a lot of bidders to drive the price up
I don't either. It saves them from having to deal with a Ben SImmons fiasco in the public, but you can extract value by negotiating through the media (isn't that supposed to be an asset of Keith Jones?) among other things.

And if you were set on getting an NHL player back, dealing him after the season opens up the rest of the league for business (could have stuck it to Cutter also by not giving him a chance to burn an ELC year this year if you wanted to be petty). A contender is not trading a contributing young player for a guy playing college hockey who might be able to help in the playoffs after acclimating. Could the return have been any worse than trading for a defenseman that has 18 games to his name in two years?

Seems dealing him after the WJCs was a motivating factor also.

Just when I thought this organization couldn't get any more amateur hour, they invite the coach and CEO of Spectacor on the broadcast to trash a college kid who didn't want to sign with the team. It really is theatre.
Yeah, it only makes the player look better. If Cutter went against his draft day word, yeah that's pretty shitty (although kids will say anything to go high in the draft), but he has leverage and used it. Adults trashing a kid's decision is pretty low. Maybe look in the mirror and fgure out why he might not want to sign here.

If it's true Gauthier didn't want to play for Torts, I don't want him - because what probably turned him off was knowing he'd be expected to play defense and not just be a "star" who shoots. Ten minutes of research on the internet would reveal that's the biggest problem playing for Torts, he expects two way play and to play hard all the time. If Gauthier doesn't want to be pushed to be a two way power forward and prefers to be the next Hayes, big forward who just wants to play offense and not hit anyone or back check, screw him. Generation Z snowflake!

Seriously, we traded one weakness (LW) for another weakness (RHD), and got a high 2nd rd pick in return (anyone expect Anaheim to be a playoff team in 2025?). About the best Briere could have made out of a bad situation.

Disappointing to finally confirm that the org's highest unsigned draft pick, and one of the most anticipated prospects, was unsigned for important reasons.

My initial thought was very much "oh no", and very much based on not understanding even who Drysdale was, his position or his recent stats one bit. I feel a bit...a bit...better now knowing the pedigree of Drysdale...injury time is concerning...but time spent actually playing is pretty encouraging too. Not sure if that and a high-ish 2nd? adds up to Gauthier's potential though.

Which makes sense if you think about the fact that Flyers are almost certainly doing the shopping of Gauthier to other clubs, and revealing a slightly weakened position re trades. WHo knows what types of offers they may have sifted thru, and probably in pretty short order, given this is absolutely a sell-high time for Gauthier, with a 48 hour expiry date.

Would like to know more, but that's probably unlikely. Willing to give Briere some props for making something out of a bad situation. We'll see Drysdale for ourselves soon enough...

Ps. This likely adds impetus to Seeler or Walker deals too...right? Take one NHL calibre deeman in, send one out, as long as he's healthy which he seems to be, has averaged 21:50 min per game in last 5 games since Dec 29 2023. He plays a ton for Anaheim when he has played...

Pps...I feel even better checking the Anaheim board thread. General consensus is they like the swap of a D for a F, but did not expect nor enjoy that Drysdale is the one being swapped out. Better.

If he was traded at the draft, what pick could’ve he gotten back potentially?

I can’t imagine that either side of this deal nets you a 5OV or top 4-7 pick.

Or maybe Tortorella is an asshole and the most hated coach in the league for very good reason.

Someday maybe you'll learn to stop worshipping washed up and deficient coaches.

Your problem is that you assume your assumptions are correct (regarding the first paragraph).

Yeah I’d imagine teams would want true centers and defensemen that high. Most teams probably view Gauthier as a winger or maybe a 2c and that probably plays into offers

If the Flyers were targeting centers and Dmen, would you rather have a Calum Ritchie type center? I’m trying to think of trade value of Cutter for centers and Dmen prospects. It’s tough but I don’t think we’d be thrilled with who he would get back if it was a pure prospect

Draft seems to be lacking high end talent up front this year. Some team would have talked themselves into an NHL ready 20 year old, maybe Center, stepping right into their lineup for ~10th overall.

Kirby Dach off his ELC went for 13th overall last year.

Anyone else reminded of Tippett? Looks busy, substance often lacking. Flyers kryptonite.
Based off of my draft watchings this is a pretty good way of expressing my feelings toward him. Amazing skater that left you thinking there was more meat on the bone. I know people are going to have Phil Myers like reactions when they see him skate in his first game. That's a good tool to have in your kit obviously, but you need to be able to leverage it and combine it with actual hockey skill to reach the upper limits of your ceiling.

He was rushed to the NHL out of his control and missed basically 1.5 years of game reps to improve on his skills. Confidently calling him a top pair option at this stage is crazy talk. Maybe he realizes all of his potential here and becomes that, but he's basically just a lottery ticket at this point.
