Cavallin left his crease after the whistle to rag doll the Guelph player with less than 2 min remaining; that’s probably a suspendable offence in itself. But it appeared to me that Cavallin waited for the Guelph player to clearly be the fight instigator before throwing punches.
Here is the rule book definition on what constitutes an instigator penalty.
Actions pursuing an opponent who was unwilling? Check (he ragdolled the guelph player out of a separate altercation who wasnt even looking at him)
Distance traveled? Check (it's already a penalty to leave his crease and he did so)
Gloves off first? Check (hes the only one who even dropped the gloves)
First punch? Eh this ones debate.
Menacing attitude? Check
Verbal taunts? No idea what he was saying to ref when he looked his way
Retribution for previous incident? Unless you consider the scrum he pulled the player out of a previous incident then probably not
If after a legal or illegal (the head check behind the net clearly illegal and should be a suspension for that Guelph player) a teammate of the hit player immediately fights an opponent the teammate of the hit player will be deemed the instigator.
Depends on the refs definition of "immediate"
Look, I dont even think it was wrong of Cav to do what he did. He was protecting his teammate But that's how its laid out and you can be a fight instigator while still being in the right (I would actually argue that every dude who gets an instigator feels like they are sticking up for a teammate). It's the whole last 5 minutes of the game part that is going to screw him over which is a problem with the league in and of itself.
