I'm already thinking of that potential 2025 1st round pick...It has the possibility of being even higher than our own pick. The Flames are f***ing awful and I can't see them being any better next season.....Anyways, something to look forward to especially if we're no longer in the bottom 10 next season.

It is such a gamble though.

It could be 20-32 this year. 20 and I would seriously consider it.

2025....if Calgary is bottom 10 (which is likely) we have to take Florida's if it isn't lottery protected (also likely). Florida's will probably be outside the top 20. Potentially bottom 4.

I honestly think the best thing we can hope for is this year's 20th. If we defer it this year....we better hope that Calgary is 10th next year, inside the top 10 and we are screwed.

It really depends to be honest...I'm not convinced Florida is a Top 10 team in the NHL, especially considering the strength of the Atlantic Division. They very well could be a mid team. Yes, there's always a slight risk that they do what they did last season, but to be honest, that was a Cinderella run like the Habs had a few seasons ago and not the "norm". I would wait till 2025 which is a stronger draft....chances are that they will be picking 15-20, but in a much deeper draft.

Good points. I wasn't thinking about draft strengths. Sometimes the top end is super strong, but outside the top 10 is all pretty comparable.

Question.....when do we have to declare if we are taking that 20th-32nd this year? Can we wait right up to the moment of the pick? Does anyone know the answer to this? If a player falls to say 20th that we really want, maybe we jump at the chance to take him.

What is the condition on the flames pick? Could
It be this year?
If it is 20-32 we have the option of taking it.

If we don't it defers to 2025, however if it is in 2025 and top 10 we have to take the Florida pick if Calgary has it, unless the Florida pick is a lottery pick. So if Calgary in 2025 has a top 10 pick as well as Florida's pick being a bottom 2, it would then defer to 2026.

The 2026 pick is the desired outcome IMO. Calgary should be firmly planted as one of the worst teams in the league by then. But.....it is by far the least likely scenario.

Also time does hold some value... although I think Hughes is a gambler and will want a small chance at a top pick even though it's a year later...

I think Hughes Differs,

Simple reason, draft isn't supposed to be "great" this year so for drafting it's better and if the team is supposed to start to take the step the following year it's a great trade chip to go after some talent with. Getting it this year in a supposedly weaker draft when the team isn't quite ready seems like a waste

He won’t even have too. CGY isn’t finishing top 12 in the league at this rate.

The Habs have to decide 48 hours before if they are taking Calgary’s 2024 pick, but the way Calgary is playing they might not have to make that decision.

I am confused by the condition but let's say for instance that Calgary pick for 2025 is 6th overall and Florida is 30th overall in 2025, which pick we would get? if you tell me it's Florida, then we might as well decide to select 20th overall in 2024.

That is correct

I personally think there in a weird spot next year (panthers), they've got a lot of guys coming off the books but not necesesairly a lot of cap to work with,

$25M to sign 6 F, 4D and a G (if Knight can't return), they also don't have assets to trade for a player so to get any help they need to either resign or sign any players to expensive contracts. Then there in the Atlantic, tough position to be in

Yeah, it's looking unlikely we'll have the opportunity to consider the 2024 pick. It's probably gonna be a 2025 with all those whacky conditions.

That's more hopeful than the reality.

They have Tkachuk/Barkov/Reinhart/Verhaeghe/Bennett/Montour/Ekblad in their prime. They will be close to the cap but they will cope, worst case scenario for them they would have to buy out Bobvrosky contract to get some additional cap space. They might not finish with the best record but they are shoe-in for a playoff spot IMO.

The key is kind of Florida's 2024 pick. It belongs to Philly but is top 10 protected. If Fla misses playoffs and somehow ends up in top 10 this year they keep the pick and Philly gets the 2025 pick. If that happens and Calgary is crap in 2025 we could end up with Calgary's pick as high as 2nd. Its no 1 overall protected.

If ever Fla pick is top 10 this year you definitely do not take the 2024 Calgary one.

The best path to a good pick is Fla suck this year and Flames suck next year

Another season hoping for panthers to crap the bed I guess

I think that is how it goes.

Kassian retired... shit, i didn't know. Him rag-dolling Tkachuk was a good moment.

Flames kinda suck. Do we still have their first?
