Was chatting with someone last night. … that first pick we have for taking Monahan. Is it better for Habs if Flames tank? I remember Florida being part of the equation somehow too. Sigh. So complicated for my little brain.

The 2024 Calgary pick is optional and only if they finish between 20-32 (aka get pass the 1st round of the playoffs).

It's in 2025 where we want both Calgary and Florida to tank.

Someone posted recently that if Florida tanks this season and is in the bottom 10 the traded pick to Clagary moves to 2025 which should be beneficial to the Habs. So happily we have a reason to cheer for Florida Scum to lose.

that's incorrect, the panthers pick is a conditional '25 pick. So what you are thinking is if they tank in '25, since the pick is top 10 protected, it would move to '26.

Philadelphia has Florida’s 1st round pick in 2024 (which is conditional). If Florida finishes with a top 10 draft pick in 2024 Philadelphia gets Florida’s 2025 1st round pick instead and Calgary then gets Florida’s 2026 1st round pick.

This is beneficial to the Habs since the Habs would then get Calgary’s 2025 pick with the only condition of it being a top 1 protected pick if they don’t elect to take Calgary’s pick in 2024 if it falls between 20 and 32.

I forgot about the flyers trade.

So if the panthers were to end up with a top 10 pick this year (which seems very unlikely) then that means the flyers get the panthers 1st in '25. If that happens then,

Scenario: In the event CGY does NOT receive FLA’s 1st round pick:

Sub-scenario: CGY’s pick is NOT top 10
1. MTL will receive the CGY pick, and
2. If FLA’s pick is not top 10, is a better pick than CGY’s, and was transferred to another team due to prior conditions, MTL will also receive CGY’s 2025 4th round pick.

Sub-scenario: CGY’s pick is top 10:
1. If CGY’s pick is 1st overall, MTL will receive CGY’s 2025 3rd, and the better of CGY and FLA’s 2026 1st round pick. Result: TBD
2. If CGY’s pick is 2nd to 10th, MTL receives CGY’s 2025 1st round pic

Hey all,

Question,
MTL can choose to pick Calgary fist in 2024 if it's a #20 +
Let's say Calgary have the #20 in 2024
when MTL as to make a call ?
can it wait until the draft pick is on the table ?
I am asking this because let's say MTL had a player ranked top 10 in their list (like Caufield was) and available at #20 for some reason.
Can MTL call that pick then ?

I think they have to indicate their intention prior to the night of the draft. That's how it usually works with these such clauses.

No, the clause is that they need to decide 48 hours prior to the draft to use or not the pick.

Or if they could use it in a package to move up to draft a player they really want...

I'm pretty sure there is a deadline leading up to the draft. But I don't remember the exact condition...

I mean at the end of the day, they can always ask Calgary on the draft floor if they can use their pick this year in exchange for relinquishing the rights to the future 1st, even if they don't have the right to use it anymore.

Here
I'd be shocked if they took it and picked. Letting it slide gives you more opportunity to have a better draft spot in 2025.

Not much depth in this draft. Powerful chance Habs wait until 2025

Yeah only way I see us using 2024 pick is if on draft day they either really like a player available when Calgary is ready to pick or if they really like a deal to use it to get a player, such as another Newhook. Then, they could negociate with Calgary to use the 2024 pick instead of the future 1st.

their team is bad. I think they'll be just outside a playoff spot looking in and picking about 15 or so. 2025 might be a top 10 pick if the ducks, sharks, coyotes start to turn it around.

If Calgary's 2025 pick is top 10, we don't get their 2025 pick.

If I remember correctly, we have to hope both Calgary and Florida are really bad in 2025 and 2026 for us to get a top 10 pick in 2026.

I think you're right. I remember this now. Forgot about the Florida part of the trade and the multiple scenarios.
