Yup but it’s top 19 protected for the ‘24 draft
I really hate to reopen the topic, but what does that mean for Habs? Top 19... what kind of number is that? What logic goes into agreeing on it being being top 19 and not say 17 or 21?

I'm so over these outdoor games. I'm sure it's a fun event to be there live but they're awful to watch. They just don't translate well to tv viewing
There are what... 60K people there? It feels like a covid game

This Flames team is playing terrible and they will most likely get worse next year as I doubt Hanifin or Lindholm comeback.
True. The worse they are the less likely expiring contracts will return.

Unprotected in '25, no? Wasn't there some crazy conditions that must be met for it to defer to '25?
No if its a top 12 pick Calgary keeps it, If it isn't it's Hughes choice to take the pick or wait until 2025.

In '24, right? I guess what I'm asking (and I think I know the answer), is ultimately, if Habs don't get or take the '24 pick, that they end-up with an unprotected pick in '25. Someone had posted a good breakdown of it all...I just don't remember where, lol.

Yes, I remember something about 2025 and about Flames needing to really really suck next season... just the number 19 looks odd to me. Anyway... maybe Habs will get another 1OA and can get another Slaf's buddy :D

Yeah, it was quite a complicated trade. I just read an older thread...and @montreal provided a good breakdown. If I read it right, the best scenario for us is a 2nd overall from CGY in 2025.

For this year we need to see where do the Flames and Panthers end up. It doesn't look like the Flames will have a top 20+ pick so that just means we don't have the option to use the pick in '24.

But we also need to see what happens to the panthers, if they suck this year, their 1st round pick that was traded to the flyers is top 10 protected. So if they suck this year and end up with a top 10 pick then the flyers get the panthers 1st in '25 which then impacts our trade in a big way.

Thank God you've figured it out, lol. What an intricate trade. I wonder who initiated all those conditions. Thanks for the explanation.

I think it’s only top 1 protected for ‘25. The crazy conditions it’s about if we land the CGY or FLA pick if I recall
Bizarre. I guess we should probably opt for '25 then. I can't see the Flames improving by then, if anything, we may have a lottery pick.

Agreed, but at the same time I can see Calgary not wanting that to happen if they wish to kind of rebuild/retool and hope they give up the pick next summer

Flames are going through what we did , refusal to rebuild , they don't have CP31 though so I'm not sure why they wouldn't want to go scorched earth they are so bad

They don't have a CP31, but they traded one of the best players in the game in his prime for a declining star. The denial should last about 3 or 4 more seasons.

Huberdeau Kadri Weegar all have 7+ years, Coleman Markstrom have overpaid 3 years left, Andersson is a very good D (under a cheap contract). That s why they wont rebuild most likely. The three last years of the first three contracts mentioned are going to be awful. I don t see them rebuilding in the next 4/5 years.

We need the Panthers to finish above 10th overall so they transfer their pick to CGY and then we have full authority on their 2025 pick which is only 1st ov protected.

It could be the ultimate assets for us to acquire top tier talent and bring our rebuild to a whole other level

They will go nowhere with this bunch of overpaid scrub

It would be like saying we dont rebuild because we have Anderson, Gallagher, Dvorak and Matheson on long term contract.

No it is not only Gallagher has 4 years left. Let s assume you take 4 years to bring your prospects up to speed and get them their first contract, 25% of your cap will be taken by Huberdeau Kadri Weegar.

What i mean is that even tho they dont approach the season with a rebuild mentality, doubt this core lead them far. They have a very weak team.

Treliving f***ed things up before leaving.

I think Treliving did everything to save his job, like Bergevin but happily enough Price and Weber were signed before his last year and went on LTIR. Common practice should be to fire or extend a GM one year before his comtract ends
