Man... reading these running distances makes me nostalgic and jealous. I used to do between 25-35 km a week until I was about 50, 8-14km per run. I've been trailing off the last few years. These days I have less time, probably a bit less energy if I'm honest. I do short runs whenever I can, between 3-5km. On the other hand, not a single injury or symptom.
Yeah, I am a sucker for a slow long run. They are by far my favourite, I find them relaxing and the most beneficial to my overall well-being. I’m hooked, I don’t know what I’ll do when the shitty weather hits, but that’s a problem for then.

Routine is still doing wonders. I had a long layoff, battled some health problems and now I am kicking ass. I did a shorter 5km run today and after 7 weeks I have shaved off 3minutes per km.

I’m still going slow and listening to my heart rate, but this is down right phenomenal. I couldn’t jog 40 seconds without going over 140 bpm when I first started, no lie. Still not going nearly as fast as I would like, but I want to break a 6 min km by end of June. I used to run at this pace or faster, but I’d be 160-170 bpm, if I can do it at 140 bpm that would be killer.

I’ve also gone back to the gym in the mornings. I do 3 full body workouts a week at 5am and it allows me to run in the evenings if I wish. As soon as I started squatting again it felt like the running got better immediately too. If I could get to 5:30/km by the end of the year I would count that as a huge win. I am pretty sure I can get to 6 in the next month, but I might be overly optimistic there. I’ve got 20lbs to lose, if I can pull that off I should be able to shave a minute per km off easy. I was reading roughly 2 secs per km for every lb. I dunno how accurate it is, but that’s 40 secs alone without counting improvements.

Bumping this thread again. I am completely obsessed with training now. It's becoming a bit ridiculous. I have been getting up at 5 \am and either doing a gym session (strength training) or running (8km). Then at noon there is a red path I have convinced my co-workers to walk with me at lunch, it's about 5km. Then I run again or for the first time another 5-8km in the evening.

It's worked out so that I haven't had a rest day in awhile, but I really don't feel like I need one. I don't run or do the gym 7 days a week, I would say 5 days a week for both now, gym was only 3 full bodies, but with running everyday those compound lifts were too much, so I'm reluctantly on a bro split now haha.

Glad to hear it's going well for you. My routine has gotten a bit messed up for a number of reasons. Went on a small vacation, had to isolate because I was at a COVID super spreader funeral (I managed not to get it, somehow, but still isolated just in case because my parents, 2 aunts, 2 uncles, multiple cousins all got it).

But I have also been doing the slow running thing, and enjoying it. I don't find it particularly challenging but it is very enjoyable, just a great way to zone out and disconnect for a while. My focus is keeping my HR under 160, which seems high, but like you I would be in the 180s at my normal pace. For the most part once I am warmed up and find my pace I keep it between 148-153 or so. I can do these runs every day, no problem. It's honestly a lot easier on my body and I see great improvement. For example, a few weeks ago in a 30 minute run, I had to stop 5-6 times because I went over my 160 max (in these cases, I would walk for 1 minute, my HR would go down to 125ish and then I'd start again). This would happen even if I was going at a snails' pace. Now I can go 1 hour without stopping because I never go above 160.

It is amazing how changing jobs can have such a strong impact on my life.
Left this terrible car industry job to get back in wellness as a director of content, just that is enough for me to be happy. I can work remotely and set my own hours so I've been back in regular training for about 5 weeks now.
5-6x/week of strength work, not going super hard, being more modest as I don't want to suffer a setback with a dumb injury, working a lot around the 75%-80% range and feeling great.
Just doing that makes me naturally eat better. No more f***ing bread all week, at most I'll have a slice of bagel twice.
Body composition is evolving, muscle definition creeping back in, leaning out without losing much weight, strength back up, feeling great overall.

All this is simply due to changing jobs. Amazing.

Sorry to hear about the family Covid spread, hopefully everyone is fine?

I agree with you that I don’t find it particularly challenging, but it’s repeatable and the improvement is noticeable even if it feels like the progress is slow, no injuries, no strain, no exhaustion throughout the day. I have worked some speed training in gradually. One day a week I’ll do some hill sprints or telephone pole sprints, the rest of the week is slow and steady. I’ve never felt better tbh.

Still want out of Montreal...cost of living here is no longer interesting with spike in prices and taxes, so I still have some stress but at least I get to enjoy my passion and get back in shape!
Thanks mate

Everyone is good, thanks. A few family members got it from the funeral director earlier in the week, and then at the funeral itself it just spread like crazy. Probably 20+ people got it. Somehow, I did not and my daughter did not, though my daughter had it in Feb. I just seem to keep escaping it.

My mom was pretty sick for a few days, like a bad flu. My dad... I called him after he told me he tested positive, and he answers the phone completely out of breath. I freaked out thinking he was really sick, and he's like "oh no, I'm out of breath because I was on the treadmill, I just ran 15km wearing a 20 lbs vest." He never had any symptoms, but my dad is a fitness freak and a machine. Almost 70 years old and he runs a half marathon in 1h 30m.

I just had a football practice for a flag league I joined. Have to say, defending against a bunch of 20 year olds is humbling. They are so f***ing fast.

Cost of living seems to be going up everywhere mate. Some worse than others for sure. Good luck to you, I own a 4Runner and I don’t even want to drive it atm. 2.07 a litre, batshit crazy.

That’s awesome that your old man stays in shape like that. I hope at 70 I can still get around.

We have a C and E week which is communications and electronics week in the CAF. A few of us drove to CFB Gagetown to take part in a ball hockey tournament a few years back and we were competitive for a game or two, but those 20 year old regular force members that are running and working out everyday was too much to overcome. We lost our 3rd game 9-0. I think if we played them fresh it may have been closer, but they could keep going all day and we were done after the first game tbh.

True but taxes here are bonkers and salaries not great. That's the hard part.
Ya I have a Tiguan...at least 100$/week. If I add insurance, it's more than my actual car payments...lol

Unreal man. Unfortunately, it’s going to get worse before it gets better it seems. Interesting times ahead.

Infraspinatus tendinopathy is a motherf***er. Been having trouble with my shoulder since the start of February. Thankfully with a lot of band work and some physio/chiro, it's gotten better. I fortunately could train pretty much everything except overhead pressing movements and had to skip barbell work altogether. I'll probably re-integrate those in the next month or so. I've come a long way.

Having to put those movements aside, I actually did more cardio in the past few months. That's the only positive thing in all of this experience; I'm in the best cardiovascular shape I've been in a looonnng time.

Had my first flag football game yesterday. Was a ton of fun. I ended up playing rusher which is just a brutal gauntlet of 15 yard sprints over and over. I got a few sacks, and kept the pressure up on the QB enough that he couldn't do too much. I was SO gassed, like more than I ever have been in years, could hear my heartbeat in my ears. We also had no subs. I did play defensive end in high school so I had some experience with rushing the QB, though not every play.

Anyway, I played well so I'll be rushing again next time, since most others on the team are beginners or dont have the gas to rush all game. I think I'm going to switch up my runs for the next few weeks to be HIIT sprints. I pretty much felt like I was gonna have a heart attack and die by the end of the game, so need to improve my hard sprint + recovery over short bursts.

Yep it's through flagplusfootball, it's a very well run league with stats tracking, refs, divisions, everything. Really well done. And f*** what a workout! I am more sore today than I have been in a long time.

Did you sign up with friends or alone?
Ya..I'd possibly join too.
On another note, anyone know of friendly ball hockey? The people I know here all got kids and have no time/energy to play, and I want to get back into it.

Yes, im part of a league. Its good, but it gets old quick IMO
What do you mean? Too competitive? Yall need a sub or extra?
I'm not really looking for a league, more like pick up fun games. Not interested in guys playing as if they're going for the puck. Bit over that right now, just want some easy fun.

I prefer games where people aren't going for the puck too. That way I have a chance to get it.
