That's why you start talking contract 6 months before his NMC kicks in. You get a feel for what he is going to want and if he won't agree to put pen to paper....trade him for a haul. I would hate to see him go...but if he is going to go...Matthews will bring back a haul of players.
i believe your only allowed to discuss contracts a year before the current deal expires

and even if mgmt could negotiate or tries to circumvent the rules why would AM or his people give any indication what there planning on doing before his nmc kicks in ?

Not even surprised by the yes votes anymore, team didn't win the cup so must be bad, fire everyone, replace all our players with mystery boxes and get rid of coach, gm, etc...

Keep at it guys

You can discuss contracts before he is into the final year...you just can't sign anything until the league year starts. So, in saying that, you need to get an idea on what he wants and if he is willing to sign right at july 1st. If he balks...he ain't coming back because you know they will basically give him a blank check at that point. If he won't play ball and negotiate...trade him. He will be nothing but a huge distraction all year if he waits for UFA status. It will kill you 2x...once by him leaving and once by the distraction.

there's nothing stopping AM from stringing Dubie along until his nmc kicks in , we already know he has no respect for the guy when he kept the legal issue stemming from him dropping his pants from the team

and sure we'll trade Marner and then we'll trade Mathews and we'll just ride that legendary leader Johnny Pajamas straight into the toilet where he's always enjoyed swirling

Just mho, but we have no sandpaper, (as aforementioned by mgt), a milquetoast coach, overpaid "stars", virtually no draft picks, and literally 40 mil to sign the rest of the roster aside from four players. If you aren't looking right at Dubas, I don't know what to say at this point.

Totally agree. Matthews has shown he only thinks of himself. His attitude has been shitty, almost reminds me of another American who previously wore the leaf sweater named Phil Kessel. And I have no doubt matthews will hint at dubie that he will sign , then poof, disappear into the ufa night. And dubas is too nice and gullible that this scenario has a high probability of happening.

I sure as hell hope Dubas is long gone by then or this team will be destroyed worse then it already is

Don't blame it on being American, there is plenty of stank with the prodigy Marner. I liked Phil, and he had no supporting cast here.

Fire Dubas, keep Shanahan. I think Shanahan's direction for the team since he came in has been positive. He made some mistakes (letting Lou go during 3 contract negotiations and not offering enough guidance to a rookie GM.)

In the end its not their fault the Leafs two stars lack something. The Marner contract is the biggest black eye for both of them.

Bit of a short leash but I'd also let Keefe go. Abysmal performance so far in both the play-in and the playoffs.

Pres gets a longer leash than the GM, IMO.

GM lasts two coaches, President last two GM's.

It pretty much happens every single playoffs every year, everyone likes to act like the leafs lost cause of this or the leafs were out coached or this is why the leafs lost.

Sometimes the other team is just better and yeah it would have been nice to make it another round, but it wouldn't matter if they don't win the cup.

Any who tear the team apart, keep whichever prospect which hasn't played yet because he will be the greatest player ever until he isn't, get players other teams are willing to trade because they are just amazing until they aren't, whatever you do don't keep trying with what you have cause what can loyalty and continuing to try ever get you.

The tax issue is somewhat overblown in general for preferential locations for these guys. Pro athletes at his level have different accounting options that most regular people cant use. And his primary residency is already Arizona ect.

Please read the tax code. He has to file his taxes in the place he makes his money. Canada is not as lenient as the U.S. in allowing bogus write-offs. Check it out. Taxes are just another reason sports guys hate playing in Canada.

Nailed it.

It's a bit mind-boggling there's anyone left defending this situation at this point.

This team needs to hit the pressure release valve in the worst way, and I'm sorry to say it but it's either management or top players.

And since I don't trust management to move said top players as well as their overall philosophy on hockey and economics, it's management that needs a shakeup.

Sometimes you do lose to a batter team, and that’s what happened against Washington and Boston. Neither Columbus nor Montreal are better teams - even close. Though, if you really do think they’re better, you just think Toronto is really bad, so I’m not sure why you want to keep this mess together.

Yeah no Cup, thats why people are upset:laugh: So its 5 first round exits in a row. At what point should the club be thinking about some real changes? To blow things up would be ridiculous but do you really think one of Dubas, or Keefe or Marner is an excessive overreaction? I can't see a different playoff outcome by replacing Thornton and Simmonds.

Me neither.

Nothing they said in the press conferences was solace enough.
I don’t think this gets said enough. Both of there press conf was like taking gasoline and pouring it over a raging fire. It was “Kyle and the coaches were excellent” and “we will keep the core intact”. I mean did these guys not go to PR school? You haven’t won a playoff round in 17years, 5 consecutive 1st rd exits where one was a play in so you didn’t even make the playoffs against an inferior Columbus team, and you blew a 3-1 lead against the Montreal canadiens. And all you come up with is defiance, let’s stay the course, everyone is doing great! They didn’t need to come out and single out anyone, but they could have said especially shanahan, “we are dissapointed as much as the fans, we had high expectations, we fell short, and so I will do a review of the organization from coaches to players and make the necessary adjustments to try and meet those goals”. Was that so hard to say!?? FML
