I think the lack of compete is one of the few things you can put on AV.

Agreed, but is that the kind of coach he is? He had plenty of talent to work with in Vancouver -- is he prepared to level with this team and let them know they're not very talented and will need to compete even harder?

This whole thing is just an embarrassing cluster**** -- many reasons you can point to for this team's performance slipping over an 18 month period, but - far and away - #1 continues to be Glen Sather's meddling and lack of perspective regarding what his moves will do to other areas of the team.

Rangers are 6-9-1 at home on MSG ice. Only two NHL teams, Buffalo and Edmonton, have worse home records. Only one team, Buffalo, has less goals scored. Nice work by the GM

Any coach that is unable to motivate his team (through fear or cajoling or whatever) does not belong behind the bench. See Ron Blow.

I don't disagree, but I would counter that any player that needs an external source to motivate them to play hard to win doesn't belong at the highest tier either. I would shoot myself in the head if I ever required an outside source to motivate me to want to try my best to win.

Agreed, but we have seen what happens to the NY fat cats. Without a coach that sticks his foot in their rear, they do not compete. Without a healthy fear of not stepping a toe onto the ice, they are comfortable.

Your argument is about a decade too late here.

What worries me most is, outside of a couple of players, this isn't a team of fatcats on retirement contracts - yet, their effort level is still a problem. I hated the fact the players were virtually begging for an easier coach to deal with, because I was scared the crap we're seeing would be the result.

One of Sather's biggest blunders in the past few months was placing too much faith in his players. Any player who complained they were working too hard under Torts and that their offense was being "stifled," although they weren't that talented to begin with, should have been told to take a hike by Sather. That's not the sort of character I want on this team.

There are 5 other GMs whose tenure exceeds Sathers.

Holland has three cups. Lamoriello has three cups. Rutherford has one. McPhee's capitals have 7 division titles, albeit in the Southeast Division.

The only GM that matches Sather in incumbency and inadequacy is David Poile. Two playoff series wins in fourteen seasons.

Honestly they should just shut down HF-NYR until he is gone, because there is really nothing worth talking about while he's here.

We aren't winning anything as long as he's in control.

not at all, but also a bad job by the coach.

maybe he should have watched some film this summer instead of saying everyone had a "clean slate".

I hate AV so much...

Nah, I preached it a decade ago as well.

The players decided that they would be much more productive if they were not tasked as much and if they could have some of their own decision making power.

The results are telling. Players play and coaches coach. These players need a control freak, not someone who will allow for their creative juices to flow. They need someone to say "You will play THIS way and that is the ONLY way that you will play.".

Expecting a good drubbing from the pens tomorrow night.

Fleury is doing a bit better and I think Crosby is playing well too.

This could get ugly.

We should have a pool on when the "boos" start. I'm thinking when it's 4-0, somewhere around the middle of the 2nd period.

Will there be "Fire Sather" chants?

Bolded is key. If I was an ideologue with zero perspective, I'd probably have agreed with the Tortorella firing. Unfortunately, the realism of the situation was that these players were not as good as a lot of fans thought they were.

The Pens are dealing with serious injuries. Their top 4 defensemen are banged up, and Malkin is hurt. Neal is suspended too.

The Rangers should go into this game expecting to win.

I remember the old days when Jags and Mario used to come to the Garden,,,,ah. Saw one that was 8-2 I believe. Just putrid stuff.

Now they have crosby and shrek.

Trust me on this: we are getting hammered. They'll pull Hank, and then Cam will give up another one or 2.

6-1 final.

people seriously think glen is the issue with the rangers? change one guy out and we will start winning eh? like sather makes every decision for the whole organization.. he is a figure head.. no one knows what his day to day duties are or arent.. we the fans only know what the media tell us, and what we see on the ice..

the decisions an nhl team make arent by one guy.. its by a group of guys.. scouts, coaches, management.. im sure glen didnt make the rick nash deal himself.. he shows up at work and says hey by the way boys i got nash last night..

hindsight is 20/20, but for the most part sather/nyr make good moves.. one example..more skill more skill more skill everyone says.. they bring in pouliot this season for more skill.. well is it glens fault pouliot skates around with his head in the sky? that doesnt fall on the professional scouts? that doesnt fall on pouliot? or the coach? or his teammates?

im curious to who would even replace glen?

Gorton

We've changed coaches and rosters how many times? It's only logical to think the problem may be the one constant throughout this whole mess. Sather.

Sather is the GM; GM's are the architects of teams; for a franchise that is allowed to spend money like tap water, everything is inherently his fault. Sather is the top, everything else trickles down.

Yes, Pouliot hasn't been good, in a vacuum but who signed him? And more importantly, why was he signed? Follow the breadcrumb trail, everything goes back to Sather.

If you're boss of a failing business, who's really to blame? The dummies you keep hiring, or you for hiring them?

They should expect to win? Based on what, a few injuries (on a team who's floor compete level is higher than the Rangers' ceiling)? The Rangers should go into this remembering how ****** they've played and play like they want to EARN a win, not just sit back and expect a win to fall in their laps or that they "deserve" to win.

Somebody has never worked within a corporate structure before.

lol

This team has tried just about everything BUT firing Glen Sather. I don't think it will hurt to try at this point.

Actually no, you're right. Here's to 13 more years!

13 years in and what does he have to show for it?

>"Sather is a figurehead.."
>"We don't know what he does/doesn't do.."

They make great moves..in a vacuum. Or to appeal to the casual sports fan by just going out and getting the biggest name available, just because it's NY and shiny things are welcomed here. What direction do you see this team going in? By that I mean what kind of team do you see is being built? A finesse team? A blue collar, grind-it-out team? There's players that fall into one or the other, but none that are even close to consistently being game-breakers, save Lundqvist. There's maybe a handful of guys who do what they're supposed to do and the rest are just warm bodies.

Regardless who's part of making decisions, team/organizational identity starts at the top and I don't think they have any identity in mind when making moves. I'd imagine most, if not all, decisions pass through Sather and if he's OKing these moves that have produced nothing, then yes it does fall on Sather to get more competent staff who are effective at their job. That is his fault. If he can't see he's trusting incompetent staff, then that's a whole other issue that can't be addressed unless he's gone.

Nothing is going to change if you keep all the parts of a machine the same. I have a very tough time believing the mediocrity this organization has wallowed in since '94 is just due to bad players/coaches/personnel outside of upper management (ironic how "manage" is apart of the word).

Very telling and vomit-inducing stat.

Where else can you be this bad at your job and still have a job?
