Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH - Part 2

I mean, I think if you look at the scale of Rebirth vs the scale of Remake, and that Remake took less time despite the larger scale, I think it was a significantly quicker turnaround time.
We don't know if the same thing will end up applying to the third title or not though, is my point. Even if it's easier, they might just increase the scope and end up taking the same amount of time, being the final game and all. It's just a lot of wishful thinking that it'll come out quickly (which we already made a bad assumption about once), I think, when nothing has really indicated that.

I am also fairly pessimistic. I see the reasoning as to why it could take a little bit less time, but IMO the big question is how much people power Square has to dedicate to it and when.

Unless I am misremembering, they had people working on Rebirth very soon after Remake's launch or even earlier. I'm going to keep my expectations somewhat low for now until we hear something at least a little bit concrete.

The other possible wrench in the equation would be the timing and number of DLC and/or whether they'll also dip into something compendium-related in the meantime. I can't really imagine there'd be another game like Crisis Core, and I think we all would be sick if they rereleased Dirge of Cerberus (it would be funny though), but I still think it's best to be somewhat cautious.

One thing that the demo removed from the original that I don't really understand and seems to have a bit of a negative effect:

Sephiroth's descent is far more menacing in terms of presentation and word choice, I agree, but he doesn't really give any hint of how/why that turned into resentment for humans, which makes his killing spree feel a little random rather than something that you can totally understand.

It's a bit like "Okay, so you're having an identity crisis...... what does that have to do with burning the whole town?"

I hope they simply moved that bit of context to a later scene in the flashback (maybe he
tells it to Jenova
) rather than removed it altogether, because I think it is helpful to view it as a little more than just an aimless tantrum.

I agree -- it would have added some more context and I hope they do something like you speculate. That would be a good way to do a little bit of exposition and worldbuilding, I think.

One thing that stands out to me now about how they have the whole flashback set-up is that you get a more lively sense for what Nibelheim was like before the incident. Obviously some of this is due to the nature of what's possible now in terms of building out a town (it seems like something similar is true for Kalm from what I have seen), but having the whole town to poke around in and interact with before really starting on the gameplay drives that home.

I actually think this is one of the big strengths of the new trilogy, which was definitely something that lots were skeptical about before Remake came out. There are some weaknesses to Remake that are related to keeping it in Midgar, but on the whole I think they have done a good job of animating the world and fleshing things out with more detail, and this is one of the biggest appeals to the new game given sort of conceptual move in gameplay that takes place once you leave Midgar.

Yep, thought so.

On second thought, I don't think my concern above is actually an issue.
I think the scene after the demo ends actually does give enough of that same context from the original, and they actually showed flashes of some of those lines ahead of time in Remake, so they're definitely going to be there ("this planet is my birth-right" "but those worthless creatures are stealing the planet away from mother", etc.). So maybe it was actually smart to cut out some of the unnecessarily repetitiveness (the part they cut isn't particularly strong/well-written dialogue in OG anyways) and make you wait for the motivation to be revealed after the massacre.
Just forgot about all that.

Oh also, somewhat bad news for some (this was actually what I personally wanted), it sounds like Vincent/Cid not only won't be playable in Rebirth, but won't even be guest party members like Red was in Remake. They'll just be story characters, and become playable in the third game.

I might go completely dark when the game comes out. It happens to coincide perfectly for me, as next Wednesday I finish up at my job and have 1.5 weeks off straight, but either way I have tried to mute words on my socials and remain as ignorant as possible. I didn't watch the last trailer and am borderline thinking I may not even bother with reviews, since there's not much point for me.

The one thing I'm going back and forth on is whether to bother with the latest Junon demo. It's mainly just because my gaming time is relatively limited, so with the game being here in a week, I don't feel much incentive other than getting a preview of how Red XIII plays. The timing just feels a little weird to me, like if the game was still 2+ weeks away, I wouldn't be able to resist, but right now I sorta feel like why bother.

Anyways, I am sure I will still pop up in the thread to see how people feel about it, and will make liberal use of spoilers for any discussion relative to OG. On the topic of this game, light spoiler but in response to what @Shareefruck said above:

I'm with you on Vincent and Cid. It would have been cool to see how they play, but the game seems chock full of content and also new gameplay mechanics in terms of how Yuffie will work with the characters, how Red XIII plays in general, and the synergy moves, etc. I'm glad to keep that stuff for part three.

Received my review copy on Monday and completed it today.

If you are a fan, you will not be disappointed. At all.

The whole date subgame is just a complete fan service mess.

By the way, with it at 93 with over 100 reviews is f***ing wild. So f***ing blown away to see it THAT good.
My only complaint is the camera angle. There is an option to make it more wide view, but there is a hard stop on how far you can rotate it around. They give you this gorgeous view of Junon but then you can't look up at it from certain places.

General vague feelings on the inevitable universe-****ery ending/final sections? Is it more egregious than Remake's version of that? Is it handled better/worse? Is it genuinely intriguing or does it inelegantly fall flat on its face?

I'm going to hold off on saying anything other then if you love ff7 you will love this game until after a few weeks after release.

Whatever you think it is, it's ten times that.

Darn. All reviews are currently being framed in the same vague way and it's confusing as hell to me. Most don't mention that stuff at all, while some are like "Game's amazing, characters are great, main plot/ending is a mess/doesn't work/tries to do too much, but 10/10 anyways," and I just find myself really confused/skeptical about that. Concerned that the final 10% of it will ruin the experience for me like Remake came close to doing

Reviews a week before the game comes out seems a bit early, no?

I'm wrapping up Infinite Wealth so this should get my full attention when it's released.

if a company is really confident in a game, they'll lift the embargo early.

Square was confident in this game and judging by the reviews, they had every reason to be.

Looking forward to dumping 100+ hours into this game.

So I'm just finishing up FFXVI, just in time. The tonal whiplash from these two Final Fantasy games is going to be hilarious. FFXVI is just so oppressively dark, depressing, zero humour. Meanwhile from the one review video I watched Rebirth almost looks like a Yakuza game, just overstuffed with so many fun mini-games, mostly chill vibes hanging out with the party, tons of campy jokes.

While most of what they did with this part of the game sounds promising so far and it's not the biggest deal in the world to fumble, I saw a preview on Youtube and kind of hated what they did with that
impaled Zolom
moment, personally. Similar to the underwhelming blood-trail in Remake (but less important) they took a cool haunting moment and made it feel a bit like a cheesy nothing-burger.

Also, not sure if old news but apparently all of the story has leaked.
