Final Fantasy VII REBIRTH - Part 2

It showed a lot of the locations but there were a few places that I didn’t see or notice. Looks like you can control other characters which is kinda neat.

Confirmed: 2024 GOTY

Didnt think it was any more “spoiler-ish” than any of the other trailers.
I can agree that previous trailers have been spoiler-y as well, and that the spoilers in this one aren't necessarily overarching main story spoilers, but a lot of the pay-offs that you learn about (that serve as reveals) and gets overly suggested in other trailers get really explicitly spelled out in this showcase in a can't miss way.

Funny thing is, the highlight moment that the showcase spoils that I had in mind most was
the Red XIII costume
. That's something you should be blind-sided with, IMO.

Anyways, I watched the demo and was very impressed. The presentation, the music, the way you're soaked into the world, and the sense of scale was very good (although I feel like the dialogue was drowned out by the music a bit too much), and some of the subtle details that I was concerned would be messed with were kept very tasteful and improved in some ways.

In particular,
Tifa's reaction to Cloud's storytelling was exactly the right amount of skepticism/interrogation/concern/foreshadowing (whereas the original could have used a bit more), and I'm glad they left the hole in the flashback of the strange way Tifa reacts when she first sees Cloud (an inconsistency that should get pointed out in Junon). I was also surprised that they leaned a bit harder into the Cloud acting like Zack thing than I expected, and I actually liked the way they did that.

Very tiny things I was a bit disappointed are gone/tweaked from the original, but weren't deal-breakers or necessarily done poorly:
  • Sephiroth's disdain for Hojo and admiration for Gast isn't as strongly expressed-- I felt that that was deceptively one of the details that really humanized him (for example, the "Why didn't you tell me? Why did you have to die?" bit from the original was very effective in selling his exasperation in the basement, IMO. I think you feel for his frustration a little less in this version).
  • They changed/removed that absolutely iconic musical shift moment when Sephiroth leaves the basement (where the bells/heartbeat breaks into a choir). The same music makes an appearance immediately after and is very effective/haunting as well, but that specific drop was so cool and they don't do it (maybe it audibly disrupted the monologue too much?).
  • This one isn't necessarily bad, but I was surprised they made everyone in the village acknowledge Cloud openly (as well as the mom recognizing him instantly) without it triggering him to panic-- It still works in some ways and gives the opening a neat feeling, but it becomes more of a coincidence that Tifa wouldn't have found out that he was there.
  • This one I kind of like but I'm kind of concerned gives away a tad too much as well. The Shinra infantry on the ground outside Cloud's mom's house going "Mo...." has a very cool and surreal effect that I like a lot, but I could also see it causing some people to figure out/suspect what it's foreshadowing right away, which would be a shame.

Had a so-so feeling about watching the showcase but for whatever reason I thought maybe they'd wait to have a final trailer later on, and so this one wouldn't be too spoilery. I barely saw any of it -- I was watching Max Dood's live reaction, so I basically peaced out when he did (as soon as I heard the words
black materia
, I was gone) and just kind of kept it on mute and tuned back in after they got done with the narrative part.

I don't care all that much about spoilers, but I'm somewhat pragmatic at this point. I have the game preordered and will immediately play it as soon as it shows up. Luckily it coincides with having a week+ off from work. So, there's really nothing that I need to see anymore, and I'd just rather experience as much as possible with no prior knowledge.

It took forever for the demo to download, but I played what I assume is very far and will probably finish it up tomorrow night. Definitely going to be GOTY for me. My only unrelated regret is that I started a playthrough for Persona 3 Reload a few days ago and I can't imagine I'll finish it by the time this comes out, and I will for sure drop everything the moment it arrives. It looks and plays phenomenally... I just hope there's not too much BS a la the endgame of Remake or random compendium marginalia.

Demo is getting amazing reviews! Can’t wait to try it. Also crazy that they will be adding another whole location to the demo in the next week or two. That’s unheard of

I kind of hope the game starts with a cold open, they keep the opening credits sequence where it is in the demo, and then have a very very late title card drop.

The demo has a sudden end to it, really showstopping. I didn't watch the "one more sneak peak" because it seemed like it would cover similar ground of spoiler-y territory that was in the state of play.

Not really about that, but I'll put this in spoiler tags since it comes from watching Max Dood, who it sounds like got a special sneak peak at the first two chapters:

In his playthrough of the demo, Max seemed surprised that it ended right there, since there's more to the chapter. Obviously (and I guess this could count as a spoiler for anyone who never played the original, but so could everything) there is the final scene and the confrontation with Tifa in the reactor, but I wonder if they'll do any more contextualizing?

I don't mean this as a slight on the OG at all, but I do think these storytelling beats are easier to drive home with the technical abilities of direction that are now possible in games. I haven't refreshed myself on the entire OG Kalm flashback, but it seems like they played it pretty close to identical in the demo, and it still felt like they were about to more vividly capture Sephiroth's descent into madness in this version.

Having just rewatched the very end of the OG flashback, I wonder if they add slightly more context to how Sephiroth approaches Jenova and then has his monologue. I don't know if it fits here, but there's also more to the basement than Vincent's chamber, or at least it seemed (again, could be misremembering the basement in OG).

In any case, that probably barely needs to be in spoiler tags, but I'll play it safe. I'm really itching for more but I am also glad to wait for the full experience. I'm sure I'll immediately tear through the next demo when it drops in a few weeks, but 3 weeks can't come soon enough.

I preordered the steelbook version. I liked the original well enough. The 3rd part better be a PS5 game tho.

If it takes them four years again, it should be, it'll still be a viable platform and Sony doesn't drop the previous generation right away when they release a new one.
Jeeze, I literally can't believe it's been FOUR years since the first part. It feels like it was so much sooner, time is f***ing flying!

(Apparently quoting you reveals the spoiler text for some reason)

Personally, I assume that they will stick closely to the original for this part, and that the abrupt ending to the demo is nothing more than the natural "leave you wanting more" tease moment rather than giving you closure by going until the end of the chapter/flashback. I don't really see there being anything else to read into besides that.

I could see them slightly adjusting what the final moments of the flashback are, though (I doubt they do the
face-off seizure attack back into present day
thing).

But I agree. I think they ultimately improved the flashback sequence without technically adding anything all that new to it (if anything it seemed like they removed a few lines). I loved the addition of the way that they
played with the out of body perspective/positioning of the whole mom in the burning house moment
though.

Just started the demo and I gotta say I like how they are expanding on Sephiroth during the Nibelheim flashback. He seems like a pretty good dude at the moment.. genuinely caring for clouds wellbeing by telling him wait in the truck.. busting his chops a little bit about Tifa.

Finished the demo and want more already. I've talked to bunch of buddies and apparently so far I'm the only one to find the comet materia. Was fun using Iol lol
I thought I was really good at remake , was kicking ass in hard mode, but the demo for Rebirth made me feel like a total scrub. Combat is much for complicated now.

I finished the demo and now I can’t wait to play the game in its entirety. I had it preordered already on amazon before the demo… they announced that about a week before launch there will be another demo but being that close to release i feel like I want to skip it. Once again love what they are doing
[him looking for that soldier that falls when the bridge collapses instead of not bothering in the original. Barret even mentions “sephiroth seems like a stand up guy” I found myself thinking that as well ]

Agreed -- I got kind of lazy in my original post and had half-forgotten the original scene until partway through, so in watching Max, my initial reaction was that he was alluding to something more surprising, but it is almost certainly just that they don't give you the full closure of the actual full scene. It ends really well for a demo, I think -- it's still super substantial but then has the dramatic and abrupt end that would have me rushing to pre-order if I hadn't already.

The only thing that has me apprehensive is how much compendium stuff will somehow be jammed in. I'm not going to think about it too much, as I ignored all the State of Play and will stay as in the dark as possible, but it seems like their transformation of the open-endedness of this transition in the OG is really chock-full of stuff here, so although I'm not a complete purist with the story, I just hope it doesn't go weird and detract from what already seems to be a massive game.

One other thing. Relatively minor gameplay spoiler about available materia:

I randomly happened to see that there's a Comet materia I had missed on my playthrough. I probably would have done another run at some point anyways, but now I definitely want to go back, although maybe I am a bit strange, but I also don't care much about a save letting me start the game later, as I will delete the demo once I have the game and just play the whole thing from the very start

I do wonder once the second demo comes out if it will somehow link together with the first.

I also found myself getting my ass kicked a decent amount, though I didn't die. My pace is way off, but by the end of replaying Remake, I had gotten extremely good at the combat.

I can't imagine it taking another 4 years. Everything has been developed. World map. Materia. Towns. Combat.

Reunion will effectively be a big ass DLC.

I'd be disappointed if we didn't have it by this time 2026.

I think that 3 shouldn’t be too far off in the horizon I have to assume that they’ll reuse the map or most of it from rebirth so that part should be done. I’m seeing that Vincent and Cid aren’t playable this time around… that’s a shame they are both two of my mains in the original… hopefully some DLC between rebirth and the third entry.

To be fair, that's exactly what a lot of people said about Rebirth likely having a quicker turnaround time than Remake due to re-used assets/the foundation/development life cycle laid out as well, but that also took four years.

There's obviously even more established material to re-use now for the third one, but it's really hard to say.

If they're ending it where they said they will, there are a few towns and locations that haven't been made yet, also.

They will likely add some new areas for story, i believe they said there are some new areas in Rebirth too.

The demo is incredible. I'm beyond amped for this game. Can someone please tell me where the comet materia is lol.
It's on another platform just before you go inside when you get to the top of the hill. Not sure how helpful this is, but it's near I think the second mako gas vacuum thing... the one where you have to open the gate to get it out because it is plugged in.

I mean, I think if you look at the scale of Rebirth vs the scale of Remake, and that Remake took less time despite the larger scale, I think it was a significantly quicker turnaround time.

Still. The entire world map is already made. Maybe they need to add in an extra town or two, but compared to what they did in rebirth, it should be significantly less.

I could be wrong. I don't think I am. I really would be surprised if this isn't wrapped by 2026.
