I definitely agree that Max seems to like to hype stuff, especially FF7 related, and maybe even more so since he is one of the bigger streamers who does theory speculation without being way out to lunch with it (I've gone down random rabbit holes with some of the latter, and it's fine for those into it, but it's way too much for me). I don't really follow many streamers, but I like most of Max's stuff and his enthusiasm. Don't care at all about fighting games though.

In any case, I'm only quickly looking at the new TGS stuff, and things look pretty impressive. I am cautiously optimistic about how exploration is shaping up so far. It seems like what they are aiming for is something that is much more truly open world than what there was in FF16 without being a typical modern open world game. That's my impression anyways -- from what I am seeing, it looks like they have creatively interpreted the map of the OG but maintained the content of how different locations drive the narrative. Lower Junon looked great to me, and Kalm looks pretty fantastic.

In terms of story (putting in spoilers just because I'm speculating)
Obviously the big thing to be apprehensive about is how far the plot will deviate with the "Rebirth elements". Will it be very much like Remake, with a creatively reimagined but faithful plot that just has some weird stuff jammed into the end? That seems like the best bet based on what they are saying.

I have no real guess about who the hooded man is, and now I am seeing that the Weapon shown isn't a Weapon from OG, so those both seem like elements that will be in continuity with the deviations.

I remain cautiously optimistic, but it's hard to be fully confident that it will be similar to Remake in this regard just because this game looks to be more than twice as big as Remake. I'm sure a good portion of that will be chock-full of minigames, but there's a lot more stuff to be seen... anything related to Zack really, and then my one bolder prediction is that the next big trailer (I assume at the Game Awards) will have Cid, though maybe not playable, similar to Vincent. Since Red XIII and Cait Sith are playable, I think they'll save the other two for the third game.

Yes
I haven't seen it officially from anything Square (but I haven't thoroughly looked), but apparently they have said there will be a Zack "episode" in the game. Unclear if that means there will be a chapter (or multiple chapters) dedicated to him, but I think it's a relatively safe bet that we'll control Zack for some of Rebirth.

I've also been trying to think more about Cid. They have said the Tiny Bronco is in the game, which means Cid has to appear and presumably join, but three new playable characters on top of the world feels like a lot. It also seems like you'd get to Rocket Town by the middle of the game at least. There apparently won't be DLC, so maybe you will get playable Cid and then only a glimpse at Vincent later in the game.

Things I've heard from people who have played preview versions re: playable characters.

Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith, Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, Sephiroth, Zack are playable at least periodically throughout. Vincent is not playable but will have a DLC episode like Yuffie; backstory stuff on how Hojo vampired him. Cid's in the game but not playable.

A cynical thought I randomly had that I'm calling ahead of time-- One small but effective moment that I'm expecting that the writers of this game will butcher because remake had no sense of restraint/artfulness/tastefulness: In the original flashback sequence, when
Sephiroth uncovers the mutated humans in the pods, fine, let him slice up the first one that he finds in a fit of anger, that would make more sense anyways than just clanging his sword against the metal, but when the scene ends with another one bursting out of a pod and just decrepitly struggling/writhing on the ground, instead of just letting that moment sit because you're meant to reflect and feel pity for its existence, Rebirth is probably going to turn it into a huge threat/boss battle/spectacle,

... which would completely defeat the purpose of the scene. I'll be pleasantly surprised if they don't do that and keep it the way it should be.

Honestly the way the next FF7R game is going is really inspiring me to play through the game just to be ready for this installment. Golden Saucer is one of my favorite parts of any video game I've ever played.

I can’t wait for Golden Saucer! They can really nail that if they go all out and i bet they do.

Another trailer (secretly?) released during Game Awards. I didn't see it play during the show (other than a brief snippet during a musical performance), but I could be wrong.

Ugh, tons of things bothered me about it:
* Cid's voice was pretty underwhelming-- A little too normal and not harsh/grisly enough for my liking
* Trailer explicitly spoils the reveal that Dyne is Marlene's father-- Finding out is a cool moment in the original.
* More Zack weirdness, as expected
* Kind of looks like Marlene explicitly spoils the expectation of Aerith's death in-game (unless it's referring to someone else I can't think of), in what appears to be a meta plot point about stopping it, maybe?
* Looks like they're taking the popular Opera scene idea from FFVI and shoe-horning it into VIIR in some capacity for Gold Saucer. Not a total deal-breaker, but I hate how every new Final Fantasy just amalgamates things from earlier games to the point where every new release feels like it's just going to have the same iconic moments from every other game. XVI and XIV seemed to have this issue as well, from what little I've been exposed to.
* One of the background dancers looks similar to Jessie. Could be nothing, but god, that would be stupid if it's a thing.

Earlier trailers had a mix of impressive things and concerning things, but this one was mostly concern for me, personally.

Can't wait for this! This has serious game of the year vibes all over it. They expanded so much from the first part of the game. My only concern is still that is will be TOO big and too long. I can't remember the last time I beat a 60+ hour game. It's definitely been 10-15 years.

If you take Aeris on a date in the Gold Saucer in the original, there is an option to take part in a play. Which involves wizards, dragons, and Cloud being a Knight, as shown in the trailer.

I know that. I'm commenting on the fact that
they've now transformed that into a full on musical where Aerith has to now perform a song while Cloud watches in awe (which wasn't in the original). This was very likely heavily inspired/borrowed from the success of VI's opera sequence with Celes and Locke (and maybe with some hints of Eyes on Me in the song/lyrics themselves?).

I think it's a good idea in isolation (they want another sequence that's a spectacle like the dance scene in Wallmarket, and this is the obvious way to do that) and it is in the spirit of the franchise, but it's just a recurring trend that I'm noticing a lot with recent FFs that I think there's a danger of adding up in a bad way (where everything pays homage to everything else to the degree that the charm points of every new FF ends up feeling more and more overly similar-- for example, people who go from XVI into remake and encounter the Mako/lifestream concept are likely to go "Oh... again?", and people who go from Cloud in VIIR to Squall in VIII will likely do the same, despite the characters having some but far fewer similarities originally). It's also a trick that's starting to a feel a little on the lazy side, I find (just constantly "Remember this? Remember this?").

FF7 Rebirth Taipei Game Show 2024 Panel Recap of interesting info and news:-Costa del Sol serves as an interlude to the serious story's backdrop and will contain a completely new story that is not present in the original game

-Player choice affects how certain cutscenes will play out as well as your affinity rank with each of your companions. This will affect who you go on a date with at the Gold Saucer and who will be in the LOVELESS musical.

-You can replay the game with Chapter select to try to get other responses, allowing for endless possibilities

-Affinity is also affected by the sidequests you take on with your companions and how you partner with them in battle

-Chocobo Gold Feathers allow you to exchange gear at the Chocobo Farm to improve your chocobo's abilities during the Chocobo Races.

-Summons function pretty much in the same way as they did in FF7 Remake, but in Rebirth you can also improve their materia with Chadley that will unlock abilities or increase their stats as well

-Character pair combo moves and special combo moves are different, the combo moves are when the character can assist you through actions in battle while special moves function much like abilities where both characters team up to do a large move.

-The demo is available...at the Taipei Game Show 2024 only (for now) lol

I haven't kept up with the news but has Square said anything about your character levels or materia transferring from Remake to Rebirth? Would be odd to essentially "start over" with low level characters and no materia.

Square has confirmed that progress from Remake will NOT transfer to Rebirth, but you will get some extra benefits in Rebirth if you have a Remake save.

As far as I know they haven’t announced the extras yet.

State of play is tonight at 6:30EST.

Sony rarely does these for a single game unless they know it's going to be a masterpiece.

We are going to get a shit ton of info, can't wait!

I’m so pumped for this game. Rebirth is gonna be the main chunk of FF7. I’m thinking about taking a couple days of work to play when I’m home alone. I have been replaying the original on Switch and I’m super curious how they’ll handle Cid and his behavior.
