Filip Zadina is one of the biggest draft busts in NHL history.

Biggest bust of all time? Not even close.

Disappointing? Absolutely but hes got more games in the league than plenty of guys drafted higher than him

"Biggest bust"

I thought all along that Zadina was THE boom or bust prospect at the top of that class

Not even close.

For 6th overall pick.. Scott Scissons was the worst pick ever.

Tkaczuk and Filatov were also far bigger busts at 6th overall. I'd argue at least 6 other players as worse busts drafted after 1990 for 6th overall.

Esaily Daigle. He was supposed to be a generational player but had zero passion for the game.

I would have liked to see him play in the post-obstruction era.

He was given a pretty rough go in the mid-90s.

His rookie season actually wasn't all that bad considered it's one of the worst rosters in NHL history.

He did have a few decent seasons later on with Minnesota unlike guys like Yakupov who just disappeared, but Nail didn't have the same expectations either.

In any event, given the hype, definitely a bust.

You know, I just can't fathom how people overrated Zadina at the time. What does he do that is above average? What did you see at the time aside from looking at stats online? Its just another mistake among many over NHL drafting history. Perhaps he turns it around but he just looks average and not ideal for bottom 6 role. Odds are against him.

The real miss was taking a player like that over Bouchard or Dobson. Unless the winger oozes offensive talent, you take the bigger offensive defenseman. Teams should trade down more often.

The draft is such a crap shoot. Zadina looked so good in the Q and at worlds.

has been a healthy scratch for all but one game.
They've played 3 games. He was scratched for the first 2. Was in the Top 6 his last game. I'm pretty sure he's now back in the lineup. Just signed a 3 year extension over the summer.

They play tonight and I'm pretty sure he'll be in the lineup. They haven't played since Monday.

I think calling him the biggest bust every is pretty hyperbolic.

Maybe his play compared to draft position should bring about a conversation about one year CHL wonders. His first year in Grand Rapids was decent. He managed to back that up with a decent 19-20 season split between both the NHL and AHL. It's been a struggle since then.

I don't know if a change of scenery will help him or not. I can say I thought he'd have been making an impact by now and he was someone I'd have liked Montreal to take. Hope he figures it out.

All cards on the table - I wanted him over Brady Tkachuk at the time.

I definitely wanted Svechnikov over both - but now I'm pretty happy with Brady.
The draft thread on the Habs board was SO obnoxious at the time about Tkachuk being a HORRIBLE pick because of nepotism that I've always got a soft spot for him even if he plays for the enemy.

Now the same people act like it was obvious that he was a better pick...

A non physical player that provides no offense and can't get into the lineup on a rebuilding team isn't a big bust?... Ok.
Compared to the “biggest in NHL history”? No he’s definitely not.

Also the Wings aren’t really rebuilding anymore. They’re trying to compete for a playoff spot.

Although the Bert injury and Vrana leave we are likely in trouble.

I think Brian Lawton is a good candidate for biggest bust.

Taken 1st overall in 1983. Played 483 NHL games, 112 goals (in the 1980s remember), and 266 points.

The draft picks taken after him were Turgeon, Lafontaine, Yzerman and Barrasso.

With Vrana out this is such a big opportunity for him.

If he doesn’t take advantage of two top 6W spots opening up then he’s done as an NHL player IMO

Doug Wickenheiser is sort of similar. 1st overall in 1980.

556 games, 111 goals, 276 points.

The subsequent picks aren't like the ones Lawton was picked over, but Denis Savard was in there, Larry Murphy, Paul Coffey, etc.

I'm a Habs fan who wanted Kotkaniemi.

I refuse to learn anything from that experience though. If I don't think about it, it doesn't exist.

Daigle is definitely a bad pick and one of the alltime busts but there were some worse ones in the 60s in the infancy of the amatuer draft. Pretty sure people would pick Lawton and Kluzak as a bigger busts than Daigle too.

Agree.. he's had a lot of chances. Let's hope he finally seizes one. I was hoping for a trade personally. I love the wings and how they look but he just can't seem to get it done!

I doubt he's done as an NHLer though.. his contract is 1 month old out of 36. You can only bury about half his salary in the AHL and it's a 1 way contract (you can bury a little over a mill in AHL but he's close to 2 mil in salary).

Having said that.. it's not going how I thought it would for him.lol

Same tbh. I'm not a fan of players like Brady because they usually bust. Brady is the exception and I'm happy I was wrong.
