Filip Zadina is one of the biggest draft busts in NHL history.

Some are saying that he is getting to scoring chances, creating scoring chances a lot but...
shots attempts, shots on goal, points produced says otherwise..

For example, 2 shots on goal per game career average is not good,
also 162 games is not a small sample size FYI.

What use is for a scoring forward who can't shoot the puck, pass the puck good enough.
Even if he worked hard and created scoring chances, its no good if those chances leads to nothing.

25 goals and 60 points in 162 games
- while getting 2 pucks to the net in avg per game

13 x 5 on 5 goals
27 x 5 on 5 points
in 162 games.

who was projected to go top 3, fell to 6th.
- scored 49 goals, 45 assists, 94 points in 66 games in QMJHL in his draft season

Nah
Juolevi got worse every year

And Reinhart I Believe is playing in the North Korean Hockey league
North American fans: Nooo you cant call Nolan Patrick a bust he has migraines!!! :pullhair:

Also North American fans: Juolevi bust!!!! :deadhorse(Even though his body fell apart after he was drafted)

Hard to argue against Yakopov. Though he did have one good rookie season under his belt
I maintain my Oilers ruined him.. he was a beaut! He did get in 350 NHL games and was around .4ppg. Drafting 'snipers' seems to be tricky. (note: I never though Zadina was meant to be a sniper, but an offensive guy in general)

Zadina was probably drafted in the right range but lots on prospects drafted 5-10 don't pan out. He's mainly a disappointment to people who thought an underproducing player should be a top 3 pick. He put up 1.43 points per game in the Q, which is good, but not for a player who is a "consensus top 3 pick".

We went though this a lot in the last year with Wright, who put up 1.49 points per game in OHL (generally tougher league than the QMJHL). Players who produce at this level do become stars in the NHL, but at a much lower rate than guys who produce a little better in their draft years. Producing under 1.5 points per game in the CHL is a red flag that this player is far from a sure thing and probably belongs in the 5-10 range in the draft as opposed to the top 3.

Top 10 picks between 1990 and 2008 who never played more than 150 NHL games:

Scott Scissons (6th overall 1990 - NYI) - 2 NHL games
Alex Stojanov (7th overall 1991 - VAN) - 107 NHL games
Ryan Sittler (7th overall 1992 - PHI) - No NHL games
Brandon Convery (8th overall 1993 - TOR) - 72 NHL games
Jason Bonsignore (4th overall 1994 - EDM) - 79 NHL games
Brett Lindros (9th overall 1994 - NYI) - 51 NHL games
Nolan Baumgartner (10th overall 1994 - WSH) - 143 NHL games
Steve Kelly (6th overall 1995 - EDM) - 149 NHL games
Terry Ryan (8th overall 1995 - MTL) - 8 NHL games
Alexandre Volchkov (4th overall 1996 - WSH) - 3 NHL games
Johnathan Aitken (8th overall 1996 - BOS) - 44 NHL games
Daniel Tkaczuk (6th overall 1997 - CGY) - 19 NHL games
Pavel Brendl (4th overall 1999 - NYR) - 78 NHL games
Brian Finley (6th overall 1999 - NSH) - 4 NHL games
Lars Jonsson (7th overall 2000 - BOS) - 8 NHL games
Brent Kahn (9th overall 2000 - CGY) - 1 NHL game
Mikhail Yakubov (10th overall 2000 - CHI) - 53 NHL games
Dan Blackburn (10th overall 2001 - NYR) - 63 NHL games
Petr Taticek (9th overall 2002 - FLA) - 3 NHL games
Alexandre Picard (8th overall 2004 - CBS) - 67 NHL games
Boris Valabik (10th overall 2004 - ATL) - 80 NHL games
Luc Bourdon (10th overall 2005 - VAN) - 36 NHL games
Zach Hamill (8th overall 2007 - BOS) - 20 NHL games
Nikita Filatov (6th overall 2008 - CBS) - 53 NHL games

Many reasons of course for why some of those guys didn't end up with more games, and in some cases not performance-related. But Zadina has more games than those guys already, so even if he is out of the league soon, he'll not have had a worse career than those guys.

So some people still think he can Nichushkin it. I would call them silly but Nichushkin has 10 points in 5 games this season so strange things HAVE indeed happened.

Having said that, Zadina just seems to have too many holes in his game. He was always lanky and not particularly fast and did little to change that. He could hang in the league as a 2nd PP option if he added any useful physical dimension to his game.

If Zadina weren't the most snakebitten player in the history of ever he gets 3 points last night and the Wings win running away rather than losing in OT. Everything he does is perfectly fine. He just has zero production.

Maybe a change of scenery trade?

Arizona or San Jose could give him ice time...just not sure what could be offered to make Detroit okay in abandoning the project?

It's a shame Detroit missed on Rasmussen and Zadina, they'd be even further ahead.

Lots of wings fans coming around on Rasmussen. Might not be an offensive dynamo but hes becoming a really, really useful player. Not everyone comes into the league and set it on fire

Tough spot for Zadina because he really needs to be in the Top 6 to produce but doesnt. He was meant to be a PP sniper and his shot is so predictable it just gets blocked/easily saved.
His game is not meant to be a bottom 6 grinder, hes too small/weak on the boards. So hes basically useless lol

What is incredible is your lack of actual knowledge of draft picks. He's dissapointing for sure, but he's nowhere near the worst dissapointing line,

I know you specified 'many reasons why some of these guys didn't play more' but Luc Bourdon stands out as one who really shouldn't be on this list.

This is not at all uncommon. You only have to look back the year before to see the #6 pick is still trying to find his bearings as well.

I thought about it, but it is what it is. I wasn't going to try to do a ton of research on all of those guys and make some value judgment on who can be mentioned and who can't. Hence why I didn't specify it as a list of busts, just as a list of players who didn't have much of an NHL career whatever the reason was.

Landeskog only had 1.25 PPG in his draft year and this is WITH HIM being far more physically imposing against his peers (Usually a bigger red flag for NHL success).
