Other than them being countrymen and knowing each other since they were kids, explain how selecting Mesar was an insurance for Slaf?

Aside from being teammates internationally, they've been apart from each other since they were young. Slaf was away from home since he was 14. He played in Austria and Czechia before heading to Finland. Mesar continued to develop in the Slovakian leagues. Separate paths and not together.

Even after they got drafted, they haven't been next to each other. One went straight to the NHL. The other was sent to the OHL.

Mesar was selected around the area of the draft he was predicted to go. He was slated to be a late 1st-early 2nd round player. He was not a reach and the idea he was taken for Slaf is not an honest narrative.

He might take a little longer than guys like Beck and Hutson, who were taken after him. But Mesar has what it takes to get to the NHL.
But that's my point. There were 3 or 4 players on that range, im not saying Mesar was a so-called reach (for me it was, bc im sick to death of small forwards), but since they picked Slaf id venture a guess the tie went to Mesar.. why not take a flyer on him.. it didnt work out. He may still find himself in the NHL but he needs to make top 6 bc hes an ugly bottom 6 guy.

But out of those 3-4 players in that range, is it that hard to believe that Habs had Mesar ahead of the others? If you seriously think they're selecting someone because of another draft pick and not because of his own merits, then I don't know what to tell you other than your narrative (that others share) is way off.

Also, I disagree with your take that he has to be a Top-6 and that he'd be a terrible Bottom-6. Let me remind you that he's a 26th OA pick and not a Top-10 pick. Chances are more that he'll be a Bottom-6 than a Top-6. And I think he would be good in that role, too. He plays with pace and has great vision.

He has things to work on. But people are throwing the towel on this guy so fast, it's ridiculous, especially when sooo many haven't even really watched him play a lot.

I said mesar was (rated) equal to 3 or 4 others in that spot... personally i wanted Lambert, but whatevs..

Now 2 years later, if there was a redraft, he'd be taken in the late 2nd (if that).. the answer lies in his current value: an undersized perimeter playmaker with scoring upside. No defense to speak of, which is a huge blackhole in his game if he's ever to crack the NHL..

A player like him better be a prolific point producer if he expects coaches to overlook his attitude towards the 200' game..

Razzle dazzle all you want, meaningless and dime a dozen..

He's got this year to prove himself, coz right now hugo and MSL agree (obviously) that he is not close. Time is running out on him.

I dont think i have ever overrated Mesar, I have exaggerated my predictions but i still think he's got elite offensive talent but has giant holes without the puck... which is very easy to teach.

He was considered a wonderkid in Slovakia and was rated to go out as early as 10. Only issue with him was his size and defensive game.

Im exited to see him play in Laval this year and show everyone what he's trully capable of
He's very smart and has great wheels. What's not to love. He's taking a very challenging route to the NHL (crowded roster, playing in Kitchener while his bff gets MTL spotlight), and I think that sometimes gets lost in the sauce when analyzing his growth.

I hope he is keeping a good attitude throughout all this. Keep developing his mental fortitude. Laval will be good for him, much better environment than dog days in Kitchener

4 guys commenting on a player they never seen play juniors.

Delorme doesn't even know how much Mesar weighs, says hes 168 lb when hes around 180lb.

The other guy is still salty we dint pick Kulich and thinks we picked him because hes Slovak, says Mesar is not flashy and he doesnt want to go in the middle of the ice... lots of bs and baseless opinions. Says he should of dominated juniors because his teammates had better stats.

Lavoie admitted he did not see Mesar in juniors and hes only judging him based on the training camps hes seen.

Basicly a typical HFboards conversion but these clowns are getting paid.

So again Mesar will dominate this year in Laval, the organisation seems keen to help him find his way. Not sure if his future is with the club unfortunatly at this point but there's no question hes got the talent

Gilbert Delhorme... you're an ex habs player and you can't call a buddy in the habs organisation to confirm Mesar's weight?

Check tes facts bigz... Mesar is 184 lb not 168lb... you were only off by 16 lb !

Define "who"
you just said he's smarter and more skilled than Hutson, so maybe rethink this statement

Time is not running out on a prospect who is hitting the AHL just this year. Is time running out on Owen Beck? Adam Engstrom?

I love Delorme. But after Mesar's game the other day, he was commenting how he did nothing all game, ignoring the fact he hit the post and set his linemates for a bunch of chances.

Renaud Lavoie the other day spoke about Mesar and he was telling the morning show that they need to be patient with Mesar. He has high IQ and does a bunch of things that might not stand out, but are effective.

Delorme's teammate at the station, Anthony Desaulniers, said he wanted Kulich and he believes that Mesar was selected for Slaf. I like him, too, but that was such a moronic thing to say. And because he wanted Kulich, he had zero praise for Mesar. That is unfortunately a lot of people's take. Habs didn't take who I wanted? Then I will shit on the one they did take. And Lavoie shut him down saying that Slaf has been doing rather okay without Mesar, so there's no reason to believe he was taken for Slaf.

If Mesar was 2nd round pick like Kidney, nobody call him bust
For me it’s that there was two players that went right after him that shouldn’t have. Kulich & Bystedt.

Mesar to me felt like pick made to compliment the Slafkovsky pick.

Time could prove this wrong, and I hope it does. But this is my opinion today.

Holy f***ing shit, it's been two years. He was a late 1st.

I really hope he becomes a great player so I can hear all the people here saying "I KNEW IT FROM THE START! WHAT A GREAT PICK."

Garbage.

I don't know how you do it, man. Even when we disagree, I think it's easy to see where each of us are coming from. But this shit is crazy and has drove me to being less involved here. If you could learn anything from these forums... they might as well get rid of the AHL because prospects never need time to development. Get them in the NHL by 20 and if they aren't ready - send them home!

I said mesar was (rated) equal to 3 or 4 others in that spot... personally i wanted Lambert, but whatevs..

As I said, he was rated to go around where he went. Some draft guides had him early 2nd and others had him late 1st. Exactly where he went. He wasn't the only one rated around that range (Beck was also ranked to go late 1st/early 2nd. Exactly where he went also). But like I said, it shouldn't be hard to believe that out of those 3-4 names, Mesar was at the top of the scouting team's list.

You wanted Lambert? That's fine. I would have been fine with him. Most wanted Kulich. That's fine. I would have been fine with him.

The issue I have is that so many people who wanted them to take someone else take the time to shit on Mesar. It's like they only see the flaws in his game and only look at the positives of the others.

Now 2 years later, if there was a redraft, he'd be taken in the late 2nd (if that).. the answer lies in his current value: an undersized perimeter playmaker with scoring upside. No defense to speak of, which is a huge blackhole in his game if he's ever to crack the NHL..

No matter where he goes in a re-draft 2 years later doesn't change the fact that he's going to play his first AHL season. And saying he has no defense to speak of and it's a huge blackhole in his game is hyperbole. You exaggerate because he's not who you wanted.

Continue with the hyperbole. His first AHL season coming up and time is running out on him. WTF?? And he has THIS year to prove himself?

He's not an untouchable if they decide to trade him. But relax with the whole it's-this-year-or-it's-over mentality.

I'm giving Mesar time. He needs to figure out the NA game and probably should have had a few years in Europe. Some guys are brought in too quickly. Im a bit bummed because I like the way Poitras and Minten play, but it is completely unrealistic to hit on every pick.

I honestly believe the real issue with Mesar is a certain individual that pumps his tires every chance he gets. It is over the top and people get tired of it. Honestly if it were not for that, would he really be on anyone's radar other than a conversation piece like any other pick? He gets way more conversation than you would think that his development would warrant. :dunno:

We have lots of young guys we need to be patient with. Mesar, Heineman, Barron, Engstrom, Davidson, Trudeau, Beck. When people pick apart their game some posters come in and “gang on” & blast these kids. Last night showed how valuable a year in Laval will be. Minus Barron due to waiver eligibility & certainly Hutson.

BTW, did anyone hear the Toronto colour crew referring to Hutson as the next Phill Housley? Holy shit boys pump the breaks

I don't know Lavoie that well but that is an incorrect take imo, I don't see a high IQ player and I don't see him doing the little things that don't stand out, I'd say the opposite, it's the little things that he doesn't do that stick out.

I honestly believe the real issue with Mesar is a certain individual that pumps his tires every chance he gets. It is over the top and people get tired of it. I don't know man, but there's been a huge shift now with more prospect videos on youtube and shit. I feel like old man yelling at clouds, but people watch a twitter clip of a guy and then lose their f***ing minds when development takes time, or a pick doesn't work out.

I just can't help but laugh every time it's Kulich this, Kulich that; Kulich isn't even in the NHL right now and I don't see Sabres fans talking about how it's his make or break year.

And more hilariously the people pining for Kulich never seem to bring up who the team selecting Kulich took in the top 10 that same year. Almost like you'll never ever hit on every pick you make and there's a whole lot of time between the pick and when things are actually determined. It's always been 5 years post draft where things really start come into focus.. Mesar hasn't even had a north american pro season yet, like lol come on people

I like what he's done in camp. Smooth skater, he's surprisingly strong defensively, and was setting guys up in every game.

I think he & Beck could be a good duo in Laval.

He's actually had a good camp. He needs time, but I don't see that being a big issue. I'm aging myself here, but he gives off Russ Courtnall vibes when he played in Montreal. Damn, that was a sweet steal of a trade.

I don't think he's top 6 or bust at all. We'll see how he & Beck do in Laval.

The conversation is happening because there's people here, in the media, on twitter and youtube who trash Mesar using false arguments.

Mesar needs to work on his game without the puck, once that is done he'll be on the first PP and possibly 1st line with Slaf and Demidov. His offensive capabilities are elite. Im not saying hes going to be generational but a 1st PP wave with Slaf, Demidov, Hutson and Mesar will destroy the league.

Beck is a very capable player i don't understand why people see him as a 4th liner? he's either going to be on a 2nd or third line of a strong lineup.
Dumbest post I’ve read on here in a long time, like r/Habs levels of dumb.

We don’t know what gonna happen with Mesar in the future. But one thing is sure: Hutson drafted at the end of the second round is a great consolation prize. He easily could had been drafted with Mesar’s pick.
