my write up on him from my Nov 2021 mock draft:

22. Filip Mesar – RW
The nimble Slovakian winger brings all the skills you want in a top 6 forward; Plus level skating, high skill and absolutely loves the puck on his stick. He can enter the zone with ease and keep defenders guessing as he goes wide or cuts to the middle. An east west type player, he has the skill to be higher up in this draft but I see some concerns with size that could hold him back. He’s one to keep an eye on.
NHL comparison – Swift skating, top 6 or bust winger – Tyler Ennis

Why do people want him in The AHL so fast? Let him go to Kitchener for 2 years and improve his play and get stronger etc. I’ll guess he is %100 going to be in the CHL next year. He wants to come over. We need to stop rushing our prospects. Let them f***ing develop.
Making plans like yours is just as detrimental. Send him to the OHL next year. And then reevaluate. That should be how it always is.

Sometimes you develop bad habits when you're head and shoulders above the opposition. I'm a little worried Roy will develop some bad habits next year. But we will see!

Tyler Ennis! Woohoo! Now that's a great use of a 1st, or a really bad comparable.

historically only 60% of 26th overall picks play more than 99 NHL games in their entire career on average.

if you get someone like tyler ennis at the tail end of the first round you take it and run. tyler ennis would be a VERY welcome addition.

he’s played 700 nhl games at a 0.5 ppg. not bad at all and much more than your average 26th overall pick gets you.

I would have rather just trade 26, 33, and a D prospect like Struble or Fairbrother for San Jose's 11 OA, if I thought 26 would be Ennis.

Seems like players develop better in league like Swedish pro than OHL. I find them more defensive responsible. Sounds like offense is already there for Mesar. At least for one year. Then maybe Laval if goes well

It's silly to suggest that he wouldn't learn anything in the best junior league in the world. It's not like just set liiga on fire. Since the average age is 18, he would face as many 16 year olds as he does 20 give or take, so it would be a mix of younger and older. I haven't seen much of him yet but there's no way he doesn't have things that he could learn from in the OHL. The Habs have been burned so many times by rushing these kids to the NHL, it seems stupid to do it once again.

I think he could be in the CHL for a season and that would do him some good (in the WHL particularly - lots of talent there right now). There is a risk however, he's in the weight class of Byfield and for those specimens of nature, I think @Estimated_Prophet has a valid point that it can be also counterproductive with bad habits. I think Byfield will bust (or be much less impactful than anticipated), I've been clear about that, and the reason is that he didn't have to develop competitive physical instincts when playing against players who are too small. He was winning these fights by default - for WAY too long since he was 15. I love where Fantilli is, the US system is so much better for those large players, they get to experience physical competition.

In any case, I would rather Slaf would play in the SHL this year. Best league for him right now and for the next 2 years probably. The SHL is such a good development league for the NHL, you get the D structure right, you get the systems, and you get mature players at a good level. Liga is behind in systems and training.

For all those who want him in the NHL, I think there is something to be said about bringing prospects only when the franchise is starting to be otherwise on the upswing. We have another year of "creative destruction" to accomplish, and many organizations have shown how bringing top prospects in this environment is a bad idea - losing every night is not for a 18 years old. It's not a development environment, it's a pressure cooker. Suzuki can take it, he's an adult. He's seen what winning is, he can see the big picture. Slaf is 18, relax for a minute.

1. Ukraine did not have mandatory military service, conscription is always 1 vote away. You are being naive if you think otherwise.

2. I'm not suggesting there would be NHL hockey, I'm saying that the habs would play on their own self-interest and bring all of their assets to NA just in case. In the sequence of events, there might be a NATO-Russia interaction at the same time as a China-Taiwan interaction - but the key is, you don't really know the when, so you plan ahead and you move your assets ahead of time.
Didn't you condescendingly write the other day that "God help" people who think the Habs might have decided to avoid Russian players given the possibility of further conflict, and now here you are saying that they need to be proactive and bring as many European prospects as they can to north America?

Nope. Wrong person.

I think they should ignore Russian players. I don't see an end in sight of the current conflict as this is the last conflict Russia can afford with their demographics.

Also, this is a freaking reach, if you want to quote me, quote me, don't describe what you think I wrote.

I mean, I'm not sure if you're joking... but Tyler Ennis would certainly be good use of a late first round pick. Guy has played 700 NHL games. Most players don't hit that ever.

I hope he's better than Ennis, no doubt. But 700 games is nothing to sneeze at.

Hutson is the pick I'm most excited with but Mesar and Beck are the picks I'm most intrigued with.

Their stats look underwhelming but they have a great toolbox and it feels like they have untapped potential. Next season will be exciting, I hope we see a clear progression with these two.

I'd caveat that Mesar's slovakian league stats are pretty good. It might not be a top tier mens league, but it was still a mens league.

Can see why they like him a lot. Insane speed, really good hands, reads the ice at high speed and he's competitive as all hell.

Those sequences were impressive, and they're good examples of how he plays. I would really like to see him in Kitchener this year. He needs to learn to dominate, to get the taste for it, not just take good shifts and do good things. He needs a season of dunking on fools.

I agree - I think he said he wanted to be in the AHL but I think Kitchener this year and AHL at 19 makes the most sense here.
