It's too early to say obviously. Kulich is a more north/south player... Mesat is much more fluid... more of a waterbug. They both would have been good picks... but you need to choose one...
I would had gone with the bigges-tallestt one. Best skater of the two. A natural center on top of that.

Hopefully our scouting team were able to differentiate between the two the one they believe has the biggest upside regardless of position or size.

His 2 goals season was a magical moment worth remembering.
I prefer remembering the 2009/2010 season when he helped Montreal have the second best power play in the regular season. The exact reason he was acquired: his ability to consistently transport the puck into the offensive zone on power plays.

Obviously, but at that stage in the draft there are many guys with similar upside... a lot will depend on how things go from here on... I like Mesar though... he's got personality and a bit of swag..

I would think the habs were swayed by Mesar being a slovak as a buddy for Slav. I personally would have gone for Kullich but Mesars pretty good too, just another small guy.

Je vais attendre de voir la saison de Mesar et où il jouera, pour moi une saison dans la OHL ou il aura de la glace ne ferait pas de tort et si il performe bien il pourrait jouer AHL la saison suivante.

I think he wants to make the AHL right away.

We'll see what he can do during the camp.

He'll not be on the 4th line, come on...

He's been playing against men already, I don't think he's going to be that intimidated.

Since his childhood buddy Slaf is going to be on the team, it will help him be comfortable and make his place. The probabilities his teammates and him Mesar high.

If Mesar belongs in the AHL at 18, I will be impressed. I’ve said it several times in the Slaf thread, but playing in the A at 18 is an impressive feat. Stronger league than what people give it credit for.

Most junior players would look lost in the AHL at 18 (look at Mysak for example).

He seems to be very good when he controls the puck so that's usually your center guy, but if he can become a Walmart version of Panarin or Kucherov I will not be disappointed.

I don't think he's going to be able to be a center in the NHL with his size, but you never know.

If DD was able to do it there's always hope!

He has the right coach that's for sure...
I'm hoping for a Blake Coleman type player - fast, skilled and gritty that can play on a scoring 3rd line

I think both are very very good picks. Both have top 6 potential. Both have top 15 talent in this draft. So i'm very happy with Mesar, but yeah... that would be fun to watch career of Kulich too.

Tomas Tatar went to the AHL at 18 from Slovak Extraliga and he held his own there (32p in 58 games). Now was this the correct choice for his development? He has said in an interview that the transition was very difficult for him- new country, living on his own, faster and stronger opposition, lots of pressure.

Style and skill wise, I think Tatar and Mesar are quite similar- both small and skilled wingers that can create offense. And Tatar has been struggling at producing consistently nearly his whole career in the NHL. Obviously there is a lot more to take in to consideration when comparing the two, but I wonder if Tatar could have turned out differently if he went to the juniors in his D+1 season and had a chance to dominate there, instead of trying (managing) to survive the AHL.

I think Gomez gets a bad rap here. With the decline of Kovalev, the team urgently needed an effective puck transporter for their power play. Whatever his deficiencies, Gomez’s superior skating did supply this critical element.
Gomez was scoreless for an entire year. He could still skate like the wind, but never had an NHL caliber shot and became way too predictable. He carried the puck up Ice and routinely turned it over. Letting Koivu walk and bringing in Gomez was one of our lowest lows imo.

Mesar is too good for the OHL, watch the scouting videos or games.
okay lets relax we have no idea how Mesar would do in the OHL,Bedard his a better overall player and hes gonna be playing in the WHL this year

Hes not gonna lose hes skills playing juniors for 1 year but rushing prospects too quickly can kill hes confidence the kid is talented but lets chill with hes "too good" to play in the CHL

send him to Kitchener

Even if Mesar looks AHL ready, he should go dominate in the O. He'll be judged mostly on his offensive production at the NHL level. it's important he gets that experience of being a key offensive piece in a competitive league.

If he dominates as expected, perfect! Make the jump to the NA pros next season with another notch on his belt.

If Mesar goes to the OHL I think he can produce 90 pts + and 35-40 goals, he is too skilled
i don;t get why people want Mesar in the AHL.. He's too small and too young to start in the AHL. we should absolutely put him on a Memorial Cup bound OHL team, let him thrive as he gets used to a new country. IMO, unless he is "too good" where he puts up 120pts then fine.. but otherwise he will get way more development in the OHL.

Put him on the Steelheads with Owen Beck

Kitchener has his rights if i’m not mistaken

I don't believe Mesar's relationship with Slakovsky was a factor at all. Mesar was picked close to where both he and Kulich were expected to go. Mesar is the superior skater and plays with more pace which is likely what separated him from Kulich.
