Can’t complain about Mesar’s year so far. Had he been injured last year instead, people would be thrilled by his D+2 season.

The thing is, many argue high production in Junior in a D+2 season isn't all that impressive when it comes to projecting top 6 NHL forwards.

I'm glad Mesar is doing well. This year is looking usefull for his development. But I'll only get excited about his NHL prospects if he can produce in the AHL or NHL at some point down the line. It doesn't have to be right away next year.

Locke was a center, Measr is getting his pts from the wing

Locke was smaller and slower too and had difficulty producing at 5 vs 5 in the AHL. He had more to overcome to be an NHL player than Mesar.

Mesar has the attributes for the modern NHL with his speed, edgework, passing ability and pace. Just need to get stronger to win puck battles at the NHL level which would help him to be better in the D-Zone and better along the board and encourage him to go in the crease instead of being on the perimeter.

It's really encouraging seeing him perform this year and having the right mindset to improve in a better environment than last year.

Corey Locke cound't skate. That was his problem.

What do you think Mesar's problem will be at the NHL level?

Or were you just basing the comparison on OHL points and height? :)

He's just another smallish NHL prospect lighting up the CHL, we've certainly had quite a few that didn't pan out. BTW I'm impressed you got my Locke reference!

Tbh we haven’t had that many guys truly dominate juniors in the last decade or so before Suzuki, Roy and Kidney

Disagree.

This is exactly what some people were saying about Kidney coming into this season. Mesar has a lot to prove at the AHL level as he looked timid and overmatched in his brief stint as well as in pre season.

Hopefully he concentrates on playing in the middle of the ice more and attacking defenders with speed and can bring that with him to camp next season.
I thought there were some encouraging signs in Mesar's exceedingly brief AHL stint. He wasn't solely timid and overmatched.

Completely confident in his skills, no hesitation to make a play.

This is the real value of dominating a lower level, it gives you a reference for the future.

Just to be a point producer in the CHL means that these guys dominated their minor league all their life.

Yes, but having done so allows you to say "I need to get my confidence back" when things don't go you way at an upper level.

You know there was once confidence for an extended period of time, you don't have to make it up in your head, like Slafkovsky.

I think what I want to see him do is still be more aggressive and attack more.
Along with getting stronger though the two are likely linked.

Still the progress is heartening. The big thing is him continuing his progress throughout the year. The more visible it is the better. He’s not quite there but if he can show an extra gear it would make me a lot more confident in his top 6 potential.

He's got to get stronger as he's so easy to push off pucks and really struggles with board battles in the OHL so when he moves up to Laval next year he's going to need to show he can win these puck battles as he loses so many and is so soft on pucks it's concerning. But he can move the puck well and enter the zone with good speed and the puck.

I agree with you but this is the same concern with most of the Habs prospects. He will get stronger with time I'm sure. Mesar does have excellent hands, skates well and seems to have good hockey sense. A couple more years of development and he could be special if all goes right.

How so?

They are totally different player imo.

Also Locke regressed in his d+1 years and was drafted in the 4th round as a 19 years old so his d+2 year was spent in the AHL as he was 20 years old and a half already.
Locke did not regress, he just had no one on his team.

In Locke's D+1 year he had another good player on his team, Matt Foy. Locke had 151 points, Foy had 132 in his D year. His D+1 year, Locke had 118 points, but his next highest scoring teammate was a defenseman who had 65 points. If you combine the next two players on the team after Locke, they combined for 126 points... Locke almost scored as much as both of them.

The biggest reason Locke didn't make it is because he was fairly slow and small. But the NHL has changed quite a bit... smaller guys are all over the place. Mesar is also a much, much, much better skater.

Agreed that Locke was slow, but had good hockey IQ. He had success in Junior, AHL and overseas. Habs got Shawn Belle (former first rounder) for Locke. Mesar's skating is elite compared to many, rest to follow. If Corey was an average to above average skater and somewhat responsible defensively, he would have succeeded in the NHL.
