He’s clearly improving, albeit slowly. So if he’s going to be out a few months anyway, then he wants home cooking and to be around friends and family.

To me this sounds like a situation where the team discussed him staying out until the playoffs as it’s in everyone’s best interest, and he agreed, but on the condition he goes home probably until he’s ready for team practice.

At this point, I kind of hope Fil takes the rest of the regular season for rehab, just to be cautious. I guess in a month and a half or so NYR may know better if that’s the case and maybe pull the trigger on a 3C with the cap space. Maybe Shane Pinto actually ends up here. I’d still rather not spend assets on a one run and done rental. But even without the cap relief I’d rather he just takes the rest of the regular season.
Agreed. We need long term assets; rentals are often overpriced and just that — rentals. Keep the player under 30, ideally under 27.

The thing is - even if he's cleared to play by TDL he's one hit away from being done until next season. Would have to say the Rangers are probably being super cautious having this in mind.

If Fil's camp says that he's out for the season, then Drury can spend that money at the deadline. They obviously can't discuss "everyone's best interest." We have to assume he's back a week before the end of the season. We don't get magical TB cap space, and we have one sub $1m contract worth of space to replace him until then.

We can't assume he'll be back "real soon," so we need to do something at 3C. We can't assume he'll be back "the day the playoffs start," so we can't spend that money.

I'm on the Pinto train until we see what happens there. If we could snipe McBain from ARI, but I doubt it. One shrewd move, and we can just hope that Fil's 100% next season regardless.

We're best with a healthy Chytil. First and foremost. If we can find someone that can cover for him better than Bonino right now, we're even better off once he comes back.

That was supposed to be Goodrow...

Actually, they can use his cap space now....however, they'd have to get rid of anyone they brought in if Chytl came back before end of season.

Personally, I wouldn't bring him back just for playoffs....play is much rougher then than in regular season.

Love to see that. Maybe they really are just LTIRing him until the playoffs.

So a dumb question. Could the Rangers lend him to a Czech team to ease him back into playing?
Maybe some "loan" agreement, but I very much doubt it's what they want. Especially if it's true he's been on course to get back.
Another rumour - no concussion symptoms since November ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Makes me think he just feels a lot more comfortable ramping it up and getting back into playing shape at home.

He was definitely doing nothing while being concussed, which is what he should have been doing. Needs to build back before even thinking about playing.

I'm not sure if we can loan him. He would count against the cap in any case, if not in full then nearly so. It's way more likely that they send him to Hartford on a conditioning stint.

I’m sure he will be back eventually - no idea when - but I would still make a middle six caliber center, on the right side of 30, a priority. Chytil will forever be one innocent looking hit away from another long absence or actually having to retire. I hope it doesn’t happen and he’s able to return and have a solid career, and do it here, but I would definitely be insulating against the likelihood of him missing time or eventually being too damaged to keep returning. Something like a Pinto or even identifying the next Nick Paul-ish situation where a guy whose been mostly a checking forward can step into a more robust 3C role.

Teams and players don't like to do this with established players because insurance doesn't always cover it.
