I don't think this means his career or season are done.

If he ceased doing everything, that would be bad. Getting the opportunity to reset mentally while recovering (and it sounds like he will continue to work towards that) can be incredibly beneficial.

It's going to be a while though. That may be LTIR money that we can use.
I think the good thing here is that we are doing so well on the standings without Chytil and Kakko, that we can afford to tell them to take time and make a full recovery, not rush them back at 90 or 95%. Obviously with concussions, you shouldn't do it anyway but it takes a lot of pressure away from the team and Chytil himself, he knows we are not dying to get him back.

He is done for the season.. that wasn’t even close to a big hit.. it was from a smaller player weighing 20lbs less..
I think his hockey career is toast, unfortunately..

Did anyone read the article or just a headline? Nonstop comments on him being done for the year or his career when the article clearly says "has made progress while skating on his own at the club’s practice rink over the last four weeks and is committed to returning this year."

This story is meaningless anyway. He's not ready to play. What is the difference if he continues his recovery in NY vs the CZE? Absolutely nothing. When he feels he is ready he can come back and practice with the team. It's a plane ride.

He certainly could be done for the year but the article doesn't say that all. In fact, it says he's working towards the opposite. The nonstop pessimism is tiresome. And no, this does not mean the Rangers can spend any additional money since they would have no clue whether or not he would be ready to come back before the playoffs. Maybe they'll have a better idea by the deadline.

He's still a young guy on foreign soil. Concussions can really affect you mentally and emotionally, and long term injuries can be isolating for pro athletes already. I doubt this news changes the timetable, just makes sense to let him heal surrounded by support he just can't get here.
It may not change the timetable but it does give us a better understanding of what the timeline may be. If anything it just pushes it out further. If he was close to practicing he would not be going back home. It would be a reach to expect him back any time soon. My other concern is even if he does come back you can't put him in a plastic bubble. He will always be one hit away and it might not even take a big hit. His safety and health should be the priority.

I think it's a prudent move and well calculated. They will LTIR him and gain cap space to make a move or two.
For those saying his career is over, I guess they don't remember years ago, a young Crosby and Bergevin had major concussion issues and didn't play for a year or more. They came back and never missed any more significant time after that.

Trade deadline is March 8. That is two months away. Rarely are players made available for trade much more than a week or two before the deadline.

My guess is Drury et al. will be monitoring the trade market in conjunction with Chytil's progress (which we've never actually heard that there has been a setback with) and if it gets close to the deadline and something is available while Chytil is still at least a month out then at that point they will make the decision if necessary. Also, there are 20 games left for the Rangers after the deadline.

There is no cap space "gained" by LTIR unless Chytil does NOT come back for the rest of the regular season.

I obviously meant LTIR for the rest of the regular season, why risk it, even if he's progressing

Ok in that sense fine.

I wouldn’t say that the latest update is good or bad.

It's bad because he's obviously not close if he's going overseas to "reset". We'll be lucky to see him any time soon. That's bad.

I read it and pointed it out but "this year" could be in a month or the playoffs. It's definitely not positive because he's already been out for two months and obviously isn't close to practicing. No matter how you slice it, this isn't good news.

It's "bad" because we didn't know he wasn't coming back anytime soon. Evidently, that was always the case or at least the Rangers have known for a while.

It could also mean he’s 2-3 weeks away but they’d like him to extend the offseason work since we’re still winning. And he asked to go home to do it.

at this point there's no point in rushing him back.

I do not know if the org is taking the smart/precautious route.... as they should. There's no reason to ruin a career/life to get him back faster than he needs to come back.

Let him spend New Years in his home country with his family. Give him a few weeks. See him after the All-star break possibly.

He should retire — just for his own well being. You don’t want to risk living with post concussion syndrome permanently.

The article does say he's hopeful for returning this season.

But, yeah, Rangers should seriously think about shutting him down until at least the playoffs and start going shopping.

he's almost definitely done for the year. they obviously don't want to announce it - would draw too much noise/attention that our cap situation suddenly became significantly more flexible. i'm guessing they also technically can't without violating something in the cba and maybe other legal reasons...idno i'm not a cba expert nor a lawyer. what i do know is declaring a player out for the season at this point because of concussion issues wouldn't be allowed to fly given the total absence of certainty in any recovery timeline. there's no way we'd be allowed to say he's out for the year when theoretically he could wake up tomorrow and feel ready to go.

but....he's out for the year, and i'm quite confident drury is operating behind the scenes under that assumption. it can't be announced, but it's understood

It usually not a good sign when a player is sent home to continue his rehabbing. Especially if it’s over seas. Usually teams like to keep them close so they can have their hands on the situation at all times. Hopefully he asked to go home for a week. We’ll find out eventually.

At this point, I kind of hope Fil takes the rest of the regular season for rehab, just to be cautious. I guess in a month and a half or so NYR may know better if that’s the case and maybe pull the trigger on a 3C with the cap space. Maybe Shane Pinto actually ends up here. I’d still rather not spend assets on a one run and done rental. But even without the cap relief I’d rather he just takes the rest of the regular season.
