I mostly disliked it as I wasn’t a fan of Lundkvist’s fit with this team and didn’t expect him to still have 1st round pick value. But to think we could be going into this offseason with Pettersson/Horvat/Chytll at center, 2 additional prospects selected with 1st round picks, and an additional $8M(minus what Horvat’s extension would’ve been if signed when Miller was re-signed), and it’s a big loss. Instead we have Miller at wing and potentially two huge holes at center.

Yup. It sucks. Having that draft ammunition to either re-stock the prospect pool or turn them into others players would have been huge.

I'm not sure if acquiring a 1st is exactly their top priority. They're likely more interested in Newhook/McMichael/Sillinger
The scary part is, I don't even know if they are shooting for those types as none of those guys can step in immediately and come close to filling Horvat's role. From Lebrun's take, it sounds like they're looking for someone more established so as to not take step back on this season.

100% this mgmt group is taking the Benning route.

Not looking to acquire picks but young players only.

Which is f***ing stupid.
It’s really dumb to me because you’re more likely to have the currency required to find these quality young assets with picks, near the draft than you are with expiring contract rentals.

Take the best futures package. Assess the team without Horvat.

Now you’re not limited to players in return that contenders deem surplus.

I'm not sure I fully understand the last part and would have to listen myself.

I think it means they want to lose this season to get a high pick but then be in a good position to start off on the right foot next season - so keep Boudreau for a while to continue losing and secure a high pick, make hockey deals to reshape the roster for 2023/24, then hire a coach toward the end of the season so they can start working with the team and not come in fresh next season.

If that's true, then it seems very strange they haven't been motivated to start the process now. By that I mean being more aggressive in trading away players.

With the flat salary Cap you need to wait until the deadline where the most money is available and freed up. If you make moves now it will have to be dollar for dollar and you don’t necessarily get the return you want due to less options.

trade horvat for someone almost as good as horvat is a terrible plan for two big reasons. one, if the reason you are doing it is because horvat has priced himself out then you're just going to have the same problem with whoever you bring in to replace him. two, teams that have a player almost as good as horvat probably aren't interested in giving them up for a player like horvat. why would they make a minor upgrade at the cost of getting all the uncertainty around horvat's next contract?

the only swaps that make sense are horvat for futures -- pieces that won't/can't contribute to an immediate playoff run -- or horvat for a distressed asset the canucks hope they can rehabilitate

Is it? You still want to keep players like Pettersson, Hughes, Demko without them asking out and tanking their value.
Hughes does not look good.

Demko could potentially be injury prone going forward.

And EP ain’t going to want to stick around with an incompetent mgmt group and shit team.

So one player should not dictate how mgmt should be trying to build a contender.

Well with the news coming out today about how we are looking to make a hockey deal for Horvat, if it wasn't blatantly obvious Aquilini is calling the shots it should be now. Get ready for perpetual mediocrity, and as always f*** Aquilini.

I’m still waiting for Jim Rutherford to stop acting like Jim Bennig

The curtain pulls back and the Wizard of Oz is revealing to be a feeble Italian man punching a child in the stomach. It wasn't Jim Benning. This is the darkest timeline. Hope the memes are worth it.

Every player Ruthervin has acquired via trade thus far has been waiver calibre age gap bullshit. I expect the return from the Horvat trade to be similar nonsense.

We are going to acquire Casey Mittelstadt for Bo Horvat.

It would totally be a Benning move to acquire a once highly touted guy that should have meh value.

We may even throw in a 6th round pick for some stupid reason.

Seems as if Canucks management for 10 seasons now has no concept of market value and timing the market. Hockey trade. Bah.
