I'm curious if the NHL would look the other way on a 3 way deal that ships cap of a long contract to a 3rd team. Yeah, they let it go during the deadline which is usually a few months or a little over a year, but seems if a team signs a 5+ year deal and has a 3rd takes up 35-50% of the cap, it would ring alarm bells.

I also think we underestimate how much capital (picks and prospects) it would really take to get a team to take on a multi-year retention. Suzuki and a 3rd isn't going to be enough for real dollar hit of $3.5M for 7 years.

I cant see the NHL being okay with a team signing a player and immediately flipping them to another team for 50% retained.
I don't know, if that third team excracts a good honest price for it, picks/prospects and it's a justifiable hockey trade for all parties.

But it does have a circumventionish tang to it, too.

pretty big circumventionish tang.

although the NHL looked the other way with Kucherov. Who knows anymore.

NHL tends to look the other way with things regarding player health, of which the LTIR absolutely exploited. But when it comes to contracts, they definitely hammer teams when there is a whiff of circumvention, just ask NJ.

This Tro thing reeks the more I think about it. I realize he's a UFA and poach isn't the bright word, but if it comes out that we lost him over a half million or million over a couple years..... To a divisional rival.... NY can't afford to over pay him. The salary difference couldn't be that much, unless we're offering something stupid or didn't want to keep him

Maybe wait and see what we do? I’ll be honest, Tro hasn’t really been getting it done postseason and I’m not sure I expect that to change once he gets his big contract. Money perhaps better spent elsewhere.
