F Nate Danielson - Brandon Wheat Kings, WHL (2023, 9th, DET)

We wings fans on this forum watch what he does closely and follow the team’s prospects very closely. The Wings prospect pool is arguably top 3 in the NHL, top 5 at worst. And he did that without a single lotto win.
Is the Wings prospect pool really that high?

Also sure they didn't have any lottery wins but they have had multiple top 10 picks and multiple years with more than a single first rounder and multiple second rounders' as well.

I'm not sure what to make of Danielson, on one hand he has a very solid skillset and projects as a good NHLers but he is one of the oldest players in the draft and might not have as much development left as other guys, time will tell.

Edvinsson is going to be right up with Seider...his pick of Cossa i thought was stupid as Wallstedt was there...i see nothing wrong with is Kasper pick...so who is the Jury out on beside Cossa...but still a long time yet for him to prove himself (i personally feel he was a bad pick) also that falls 80% on the head scout and scouts....Yzerman would put stock into his team im sure for scouting...so i would not put everything on him for the bad drafting in Tampa...he is final say but he wouldnt have the time to see the top guys in quantity like the scouts so he would put his trust in them.
Exactly. Tampa's great drafting is all about Al Murray, not Yzerman

Top of my head, Anaheim/Chicago/Columbus/Detroit probably make up 4 of the Top 5.

And Chicago falls pretty far on Day 1 once Bedard graduates. They haven't been rebuilding long enough to have the depth the other three do.

Bedard is a prospect right now for these purposes and the Black Hawks have enough other top prospects to challenge Detroit right now for overall, Bedard is really that much of a difference maker.

Others like Lukas Reichel, Kevin Korchinski, Moore, Greene and Nazar look good as well and some of their Dmen have good skillsets and are NHL projectable in Rinzel, Ethan Del Mastro and Allan.

To be sure though only Korchinski is really a top defensive prospect.

Adam Gajan is a real wildcard but goalies are so hit and miss.

I'd probably rank those something along the lines of Korchinski/Moore/Reichel/Nazar/Green. (Reichel the surest of the group but I think KK/Moore have better potential)

As a group, I'd take Edvinsson/Kasper/Danielson/Cossa/ASP/Wallinder. Even if you take out Edvinsson to be fair (And I'm not 100% sure he graduates this season) I'd still likely go Detroit.

... And then you've gotta contend with the fact that Detroit has the likes of Mazur/Soderblom/AlJo outside of that top group, plus some solid boom/bust potential with Lombardi and Buchelnikov.

Tampa was huge success in developing talent, certainly. But how much credit are you gonna give GM for drafting guy in mid-late rounds that he may have never seen?
I mean, in general, GMs aren’t scouts. They do get a look at the players too, but the scouts are the experts. The GM’s job is more to hire a strong scouting team, and make the final decision if there are disagreements - as much about judging which scout’s opinion you trust most as personally scouting the players.

Stevie Y’s Tampa teams overall drafted very well - had plenty of whiffs but also plenty of huge hits. Like any GM, he’s only a part of that, drafting is a team effort, but I definitely give him some of the credit for Tampa’s very successful drafting under his reign.

Does it? Wings get props for Seider but not like any of Yzerman other 1st rounders show brilliant insight. Tampa routinely missed on 1sts too.
I think the point was that Detroit's european/swedish scouting has looked pretty good lately. Even when choosing between directly comparable players like Seider/Broberg, Johansson/Norlinder, Söderblom/Edström, Raymond/Holtz, Wallinder/Grans, etc. they seem to be making all the right choices.

This is also relevant because many of those choices (including Edvinsson over Eklund) were criticized or at least questioned at the time of the draft.

It's a bit trickier to know if their NA scouting is good enough to identify that Danielson was the right pick instead of Dvorsky, but they definitely didn't pass on him for no reason.

Just checked and you're right. Don't listen to me  Absolutely no idea where I got the other date from and yet I doubled down

Without me taking two seconds to check, it might've been the date he stepped down and became an advisor to BB.

Although you could argue that even then, he was kinda working for Detroit. Like, why is Tampa's advisor going to scout Mo Seider? Even halfway through the season he wasn't ranked that low in the draft for Tampa to get him.

Its actually a really good comp for him. Really fast with skill but does the little, intangible stuff. He was a menace on the forecheck last night. I wouldnt describe either of them as mean, but theyre definitely gritty and will finish their checks and dont necessarily take shit out there either.

He looks very good. I'd expect one more year in junior is all he needs to have before permanent NHL role.

I think he's working with a higher offensive ceiling than Larks at this stage but they really are very close in style. Danielson's speed is way faster than I thought, he was everywhere last night against men.

He is going to be a great pro. He does everything at a high skill level with pace.

BUT PLEASE SEND HIM BACK TO BRANDON!
He will surely be playing in Brandon. The Wings have a logjam at forward right now and Yzerman is too stingy with his assets to let a veteran walk. Barring some unforeseen trade, Nate the Great will be tearing it up for Brandon next season.
