F Nate Danielson - Brandon Wheat Kings, WHL (2023, 9th, DET)

I think Yzerman went with a safe choice at a position of need for the organization. At worst, he is a big, fast, right shot center who plays the entire 200ft of ice. He did pu up a decent amount of points for a player without much supporting cast. If he can improve some areas of his game and translate that to the NHL level, he could turn into much more.

I don't seen this as a bad pick or a low ceiling pick.

Detroit can't rely on Copp and Compher more than the next 2-3 years. Players like that are 2nd line or middle six forwards. Once those types of players get into their 30's, they start going down hill fast. Yzerman brought them in to transition the team.

Once they are into their 30's, you can start expecting Larkin, Danielson, Kasper down the middle, which is pretty solid. None of them may be among the best centers in the league ever, but that's good depth and all are big and can skate. Wouldn't be surprised either if Danielson could hit the heights of Larkin. Not saying he's too similar to Larkin, but I think his ceiling is a similar caliber.

THE YZERFENCE . a fence you cant get through . hes making it a pita to generate offense vs red wings , danielsons a perfect fit

CENTER : two way centers
LARKIN
COPP
COMPHER
KASPER
DANIELSON

DEFENSE : big good skating dmen
SEIDER
EDVINSSON
WALLINDER
BUIUM
GIBSON
Some of those players didn't seem very hard to score on last year

Danielson is a nice prospect, but at 9th it seemed a little early to me.

Plus he was one of the older DY eligible player, born 27 September.

Yzerman isn't always going to snag the sexiest pick. He's a hockey mans, hockey man. He's more interested in steak than sizzle. Danielson will be a very nice player for, what Stevie hopes to be, a Cup contender in the near future.

This. Yzerman is playing chess, not checkers.

That's fine, but if you are actually playing a game of checkers, trying to play chess may wind up making you lose.

Danielson isn't the worst pick ever or even in this draft, but I do think there were better picks. But what looks smart or dumb on draft day isn't always right.

I said last year, Kasper projecting as a 2-way center is a better pick long term than Savoie, so is an undersized offensive C. I feel the same with Danielson. Those kids won't light up the box scores, but they'll play a complete 2-way game.

I'll admit even I wanted Benson, but Nate is the smarter, hockey move pick. McDavid and Drai are proving that flash doesn't win Cups.

Worth noting that a 6'2 190lb RH center that was a late riser up the rankings, carried a poor team that had a whopping TWO NHL drafted skaters. The higher drafted of the two went at #116 in 2021 and the other was a 7th rounder. Not to mention they had coaching issues until December rolled around. To that point, I don't agree with the "older draft eligible but weak statline" argument.

On Danielson this will be his last year in junior. I would expect him to be a professional hockey player next year be it in Detroit or Grand Rapids. So really you could argue if he is ready and he has the skating and pro frame to not worry he would be targeted easily to transition to the AHL and be accelerating in front of his draft class. It has worked poorly for some and well for some so there isn't risk to it. But everyone looks at this like a bad thing, it might not be bad that he can go up a level sooner because of the fall birthday. The Wings have shown this inclination as an organization too with several all be it debatable Zadina, Veleno, Seider drafted as pro, Edvinsson drafted as a pro, Raymond drafted as a pro, Kasper drafted as a pro, Cossa all being brought forward as pros because of their fall birthdays or accelerated control of development through Grand Rapids or in Raymond's case just outright taking a job.

I am pretty pleased about the Danielson pick. I had him at #8 on my board. He is a full 200 ft right shot centerman. At 6'2 he should fill out to take away a decent chunk of space and he is very good to date at zone entries, much like Larkin using his speed to push defenders backwards. He funnels pucks to the middle a lot and has an underrated wrist shot with a decently deceptive release. He feels like a player whose game should translate up well, I don't think he is as far off as most are saying in terms of readiness. There is a reason Bedard talked about him the way he did. You never fully know with prospects. But I like the fit, I like his skill set and I think we have desperately needed this kind of player in our system. Having a skilled top 9 right-handed center has been sorely lacking. I am curious to see what he does in the WHL this year, I wonder if he might get moved to a bigger team at some point with this likely being his last year in junior.

The fact the Wings needed a centre and went to the CHL for Danielson instead of the SHL for Dvorsky says a lot. For me it will be these tow players that should be compared in the future evaluation of the Wings’ pick.

Agreed. Imo Danielson will be a good 3C. But Dvorsky will become a 2C.

Knowing the way Detroit drafts under Yzerman, Dvorsky's skating probably killed his value.

It also means Hakan likely wasn't pounding the table for Dvorsky considering they've leaned heavily on his judgment since Yzerman took over.

Does it? Wings get props for Seider but not like any of Yzerman other 1st rounders show brilliant insight. Tampa routinely missed on 1sts too.

Sure Lucas Raymond having 57 points as a 19 y/o shows nothing special at all... Or how the rest of them are 20 y/o or younger...

He messed up those 1st rounders with Tampa means he's bound to do the same in Detroit? Don't be purposely obtuse.

Maybe let's wait until Dvorsky actually plays a single game in the SHL before you continue following around bashing Danielson (or any of Yzerman's recent 1st round picks for that matter).
