i love this pick by Vancouver...I think they really took a player who can make teams before kick their butts for not taking him higher.

COuld Lekkerimaki have slipped in the draft a few spots because of his bout with Mono? He got pretty sick and then played later in the year after recovering. But Mono takes a lot of a person.

i really do not know....he had an amazing U18s that where he lead the tournament in scoring...so to me the mono worries would have been thrown out the window at that point...i really do not know why he slipped to 15...i was thinking anywhere from 5 to 10 he was going to go.

Liljegren dropped when he had mono, Chychrun dropped because of a bad Red vs White game. Absolutely could have dropped due to mono.

He played very very well within his skillset. So it definitely wasn't mono.

I think he fell just like smallish snipers often do. Some scouts said that he is too one-dimensional as a shooter.

Cole Caufield had better toolbox than Lekkerimäki in his draft year as a small and fast sniper and he dropped to #15 too.

Caulfield also 5'6 not 5'11 so to me at 5'6 it is more of a risk and i could see that player falling a bit.....to me 5'11 is average size not small...either way, Vancouver ended up with a hell of a player in the draft.

Lekkerimaki is out here at Canucks’ rookie camp. One of the Canuck assistant coaches was on local sports’ radio talking about the camp. He mentioned Lekkerimaki is still not fully recovered from the bout from Mono. Not sick or anything like that, but Mono takes a lot out of a person, and it takes time to get back to full strength, fitness and such. I think we see Lekkerimaki take a big leap ahead in the fall.

To add, I think Allsvenskan is a great place for the Djurgårdens 3 to play in next year. Those guys can do some real damage and develop their offensive games. SHL is just a tough, tough league, even Lucas Raymond didn't look great there. In Allsvenskan these guys can breathe a little bit.

Loved this pick for the Canucks! Years like this are good to not have a lottery pick. The top of the draft isn't head and shoulders above the rest and the middle of the draft can easily have a faller like this. A centre or RD would have been ideal, but you always take the best talent left.

It's also good just to have a first round draft pick again. We had such a great run of top prospects then boom! Two straight years without a 1st and suddenly the prospect poop is bare.

One-dimensional offensively maybe. Compared to Brock Boeser, he can skate better but Brock has better board work and checking ability. Canucks need more complete players especially if they plan on keeping Pettersson and Garland.

lots of players need to mature on Vancouver. They’re mostly relying on U26 players. Raw talent they have.

offence is not one dimension as a whole.

shooting, playmaking, skating, thinking

those are all dimensions of offence just to name a few and Lekkerimaki is excellent and great at alot of those things

Pure sniper...

OMG the space he will have or create on the powerplay because opposite side will be EP40 firing rockets. Lekki and Pettersson going to be a problem.

Game breaker is what i would describe Jonathan.

highlight from today's scrimmage in Vancouver.

Blast from Ovi spot. Half wind up and puck just explodes out of his stick with accuracy.

Had a rough tournament along with the rest of the Swedish forwards, although he just told the media he had mono and it was a coin flip as to whether he'd play at all in the WJC.

Looking forward to seeing what he can do this winter, you could just tell something was off with him.

Agreed, especially when u take into effect he's one of the youngest players in the tourney. I'd be shocked if he doesn't light up the WJC this coming december

Should he have even played then?

There was 36 U18 players at the WJC, im not sure he qualifies as “one of the youngest.”
Allow me to rephrase then. One of the youngest from a legit team. 1 of 6 from the big 4 countries.

Czech had 5 and Slovak had 10.

It’s extremely impressive to crack team swedens roster at his age “technically before he was drafted.”

That’s all I meant. Idc about the Austrians, Slovaks or Latvians being full of ‘em ya know.

That’s true. I look at past tournaments, 2021 bubble, 3 Slovak 16 year olds who are not even draft worthy players were playing, I forget their names. Austria had a couple guys too, but not relevant as you say :sarcasm::laugh:

How's Lekkerimäki been playing so far this season? 1 goal and 3 points in 9 games so far.

Definitely a kid I have been wrong about so far - has been demoted to a 4th line role in the Allsvenskan.

Lets hope he picks up the pace
