Terrific surname. Finnish roots definitely. I'm guessing he is a descendant of Finnish immigrants who came to Sweden during 1960s?
Tornio valley is possibly also.

Fantastic finish to a very difficult year for Lekkerimaki.

Mono, Concussion, Broken foot.

Then finally getting it all together by playoffs and finishing with a blistering 15 pts in 15 playoff games.

He needs to have a big summer getting stronger and quicker with acceleration.

His shot is A+, and he also thinks the game very well.

He reminds me ALOT of Oliver Bjorsktrand.

I live in Vancouver and saw alot of Bjorkstrand when he played for Portland Winterhawks. They are very similar player at this age.

Word around Vancouver is the Lekerrimaki will be signing his ELC with the Canucks and then be loaned for the season to an SEL team. Leksands or Farjestad seem to be the front-runners.

Since Lekkerimaki is a late birthday. If say he were in this years draft where would he go?
He had a horrible regular season due to multiple health related issues (post mono, concussion and ankle injury)…so he probably wouldn’t be discussed as a first rounder at all…

…however, after coming back from his ankle injury, he scored 15 points in 15 playoff games.

Scouts tend to like players who come on and their game appears to be ascending. He’d also be helped by the fact his best hockey came in playoff action.

….but I think what would help him the most would be he finally showed a willingness to get involved and not play on the perimeter (which was seen as his biggest weakness).

I‘d expect he’d go in the later part of the 1st round, however there could be teams viewing him as a sleeper pick and that could lead to him being picked higher (maybe even as high as he was picked last season).

I think a lot of scouts and GM’s would view his season in 2 parts:

1/ a disappointing regular season filled with health issues in which he still showed ample skill
2/ a kid who rapidly progressed and showed much more when he was healthy, when the games counted the most.

Some teams would place more emphasis on the playoff success, while others may not be able to look past the regular season struggles.

Looks like Lekkerimaki is close to being loaned to play in Orebro next season in the Swedish Elite League.

Is Leo Carlsson staying 1 more year in Sweden? if he does, he can potentially play on a dynamite offensive line with Lekkerimaki.

D-prospect Elias Pettersson plays for Orebro as well so lots of youth infusion next season for them.

He’s a quiet guy who sounds like he learned a lot about himself last year. I see more opportunity for him this year to use his strengths as an offensive weapon, especially with a full season of training.

U18 he led the Tournament in scoring and I expect a huge WJC this year from him. Sweden should be very fun to watch with 3 Prospects from the Canucks and a good chance at winning a medal.

He showed well in the Canucks prospect camp this year but it could be two more years until he comes to North America.

This is probably ok as he was one of the youngest players in the class when he was drafted.

He has core strength issues, and he’s going to have to make a big commitment to changing that. Hopefully he already has. He has the skill to play in the NHL, but until he’s stronger, it’s going to effect his development too.

He reminds me some of Jonathon Berggren in many ways. He looks really good, then when he takes a step forward against better players, he struggles in the corners and ends up with nagging injuries.. Berggren couldn’t keep himself healthy for a couple of years (post draft) either playing against bigger, stronger players. All core injuries like Lekkerimaki. Look at him now though. I’m not sure there’s a pound for pound guy his size that’s any stronger. He goes into the corners against some big boys and comes out with the puck now. Sky is the limit.

So it’s possible. The skill is there. He just needs to get that core strength going, and then to feel it on the ice. Gaining the confidence to play in the corners and on the walls. It might take a couple of years but it should be worth it. I liked him a lot in his draft. He was worth that pick, as long as he get himself stronger and healthier.
