There are like 2 centers available as UFAs. There's a clear misunderstanding that Kampf is a 4th liner despite being 7th on forwards in terms of TOI/G because he PKs a ton and plays with a lead. He's also a gym rat and rarely ever gets injured. Find me a pending UFA right now that can replace Kampf at a fraction of the price and I will eat my words.

I'm all for skill and maximizing cap space but I really don't see how this is an issue. He got a 900k raise and is signed through likely the bulk of his prime.

We all want more speed and more forechecking... Kampf brings both. I'm really confused by some of the lamenting posts. What am I missing here?

And the "anyone but Dubas" apologists who can't see an idiotic 30% overpayment when they see one continue to blindly defend the new guy at all costs no matter how dumb a signing he makes.

He just are up the cap increase. 7 goals.
It's Treliving's first move, and it's far from the drama you're creating.

I don't mind Kampf sticking around. A bit surprised on the term but he gives an honest effort every night. I'll always respect and appreciate that.

Meh. Kampf is an elite 4th liner, but that's a little too much term and money for a bottom line player. I'd also much rather have Acciari in the 4C role as he's better offensively, plays with way more sandpaper and is very good defensively.

I mean he has won 52.2% of his draws in Toronto. 55%+ at ES. His PK faceoff ability was lacking this year, but was fine enough last year, and he was still like borderline top 50 in the NHL with most of the guys ahead of him being either elite players or players with deficiencies in pretty much every other area except faceoffs.

Defensive guys are wanted but never appreciated in Toronto. He was the best guy at what he did on the market by far, and clearly Treliving wanted a guy who could handle those kinds of responsibilities going forward. Now it opens up the options for our other spot to not have to be one of those likely overpriced options in UFA or on the trade market.

I’m not saying he’s a bad player but none of what you described is dominant in any sense of the word. If you’re paying extra for a 4C because of his faceoffs you shouldn’t need to qualify it with “they’re really good.. but only sometimes.. and only at ES, he sucks on PK faceoffs.. and the 50 guys who are better than him don’t count for some reason..”.

You're assuming that Acciari even wants to stay in Toronto.
Of course we don’t know for sure but early on it was rumoured he would definitely consider re-upping; was reported around same time as Schenn apparently wanting to stay too

Wish it were cheaper but he's a center and a defensive specialist and therefore more valuable than his offensive stats.

I would have guessed around $2 million, so it's probably a bit higher than I would have liked. Still, though, I think a lot of people understate his value to the team. He's a strong penalty killer and managed 25 points while getting zero PP time and playing some of the most aggressively defensive minutes of any player in the league.

There's a lot of value in having a player you're comfortable deploying in that kind of role (allowing your top offensive players to start in the offensive zone as often as possible), and I don't think that kind of player is as easy to find as some people seem to think.

Yeah, I was picturing him as the 4C. Still possible, but $2.5 is a bit much. Oh well I don't mind it.
He would've got at least that on July 1
He can win face offs
Not elite but I bet they ll be similar signings July 1st

2.5 is too expensive for a 4th liner. At that price he’s the 3rd line center on a shutdown role. Maybe leafs plan to have to third lines. One for shutdown and one for scoring.

Good thing he doesn't have a 2.5 Cap hit then...

It would have to be Blueger, Eller, or Nosek.

Kampf would lead the pack out of that group for sure, but is also likely the most expensive.

So once again it comes down to preference.

People are too busy playing NHL 23 and are dumbfounded why reality doesn't match their 2 hour re-tool.
