Laine was/is a joker, nothing more, people have act like he is a proven superstar, a selääne in his prime. Laine is still a very intresting joker going into this tournament, but the hype as been to crazy. He did score only 33p in 46 games in the finnish league after all.

Wonder what he has yet to master, speed? puck handling? physical play? Two more JWC in theory. Insane.

He had more than one good play in the entire game. He was easily our best puck mover for one thing. He played just like he usually does.

You want me to mention good plays I can do that, if that change anything.

I wrote great, not "good".

What were these great plays?

None of our defencemen looked really good tonight.

The difference to Finland's defence should be huge, considering the fact that 50% of them can't even crack an NHL roster.

It wasn't.

Well, that wasn't too bad. I bet when we face next time, Sweden will not score 6 times. We are so much weaker on paper that much of the 5 on 5 play was pretty ok. Lots to improve, but much good already. Sweden is the second favourite of the tournament (clearly stronger than the US) but they have a longer way to their full potential and who knows if they will even reach it. I think we will.

I do not know what you mean by great. But Karlsson is NOT a flashy player, what you will see from him in a average game for him is a lot of high level good plays but maybe not that many highlight plays. Those that say he is a flashy player just live on the stereotype from when he was a junior. Do not expect him to dribble 5 guys plus the goalie and put it in the net.

This is for example the reason he won the assist league this year, it is not by flashy plays, it by doing consistent high level good plays, being a good puck mover.

There WAS a difference!

Hedman > Hockey-backa (Jokipakka)
Hjalmarsson > Pucka (Pokka)

Filip Forsberg ***
Mikael Backlund *(*)
Jakob Silfverberg **
Nicklas Bäckström ****
Loui Eriksson ****
Daniel Sedin ***
Henrik Sedin ****
Carl Söderberg ***
Carl Hagelin *
Patric Hörnqvist ****
Gabriel Landeskog **

Karlsson **** (The new Wall Of Pain! Or Son Of A Senator or whatever...BUT PASS the puck on to Henrik so gets closer to goal when he gets the puck, I start to doubt Karlsson's hockey sense a bit)
OEL ** (OEL - Karlsson - Sedin is a catastroscope)
Hedman ***
Strålman ***
Lindholm **
Hjalmarsson ***
Ekholm ** (played forward most of the time)

Lundqvist * (two softies, heatstroke and not in shape, worrying to say the least, two classes behind Goalie USA by now)

New lines please:

Landeskog - Söderberg - Hagelin (more defense and speed as a weapon)
Sedin - Sedin - Eriksson
Forsberg - Bäckström - Hörnqvist
Rakell - Backlund - Silfverberg (more power)
Pretty high standards you have for Lundqvist. A screened shot and a breakaway are considered softies? Then what was Enroth's goal in the last game, "blowing up a star system bad"? You're not supposed to suffer by the heat working out in a Michelin suit in 25 degrees, a temperature many other players complained about as well?

Your standards for Karlsson are also pretty low. 4 stars for that overall performance? That another coach played OEL and Karlsson together is a damn joke. You can see even on paper they're not a good fit, wth are two offensive defensemen going to do?

I watched about 65 of Ottawa's games last season. Anyone saying that Karlsson is NOT a flashy player don't know what flashy means.

He does not try his old patented end to enders anymore, at least not very often, but if you were to make a poll about the 10 flashiest players in the NHL, Karlsson would be on 100% of the answers.

Karlsson was flashy well over junioryears. It was Cooke who put an end to the flying Erik. With lesser skating everything by his great instincts he no longer can do.

Finland always reach or exceed their potential. Sweden rarely does...

Most of his points comes as a result of many good, to many eyes maybe even simple plays, not flashy plays. Consider how much puck he has, he do very little flashy things. Then the fact that people hold on to their sterotypes do not change anything, Karlsson is not a flashy player anymore, his points comes from elite solid puck moving skills. What you saw yesterday is what made him the winner of assist league, it is exactly that type of play that made him achieve that.

This is a highlight video from his season, some flashy plays, but not many for being a highlight video, but there are far more "simple and good" plays in this highlight video. He is extremtly consitent in being a good puck mover, that is what his points comes from. OEL is a more flashy player

Well, I guess there is something there - I have always admired the Swedish self-confidence and coolness, but sometimes your teams seem bit lethargic, like on diesel, so it seems that at times when you would need that extra shift, it just doesn't materialize. Finns you can pretty much trust that they will fight tooth and nail whatever the odds and win or lose - but then our skill level is often so much weaker than the opponents that it's not enough.

You should see Cogs grade for Karlsson... and Lundqvist was EMBARASSED yesterday! Even Rask was way better! They understand HEAT in Finlandia.

Luckily Scandinavium was hot so we could pretend we were sweatty.

We must have very different concepts/definitions of the word "flashy".

I'm curious, how many games with Ottawa did you see last season?

You should see Cogs grade for Karlsson...

Karlsson wasn't worth anything above a 2/5 in the second game against Finland. Made very little happen 5 vs 5 and made some half-assed plays in his own zone, losing races for pucks etc.

I have no idea how anyone could give him a grade of 4/5.

The problem is this is a tournament. If the guy sucks, he shouldn't be on the team. If you're expecting nothing from him, why put him on the team?

Jesus, can you not drag your Laine vs Matthews mentality through so many topics?

How many Finnish players of only 18 years old, have ever been on a "best possible" national team roster?

Were Selänne or Koivu?

Selanne was only 20 years old at 91 Canada Cup (two points in the tournament). Olympics have been best on best only since 98. They really didn't even have a chance to be in a best on best tournament. It is a rare event to have a chance at that.

As long as Laine outproduces 20 year old Selanne, it can be considered a success.
