A good stat to look at for offence is OPS. It's on base percentage + slugging percentage. Of course you want your players to get on base lots which he does and secondly he has a lot of power and extra base hits so his slugging percentage is high. Also consider that he plays a premier position. So to have a .899 OPS hitter would be more impressive in CF or SS then say 1B or DH because he is also contributing more defensively. CF and SS is a bit more challenging to play so if you have a guy hitting the ball well and playing a premier position it's more valuable.

Smyly pitched pretty well until he surrendered those two walks in the 4th. The following inning was a Chernobyl level meltdown. HR to Grichuk, walked Seimian and then that brutal Kirk AB. This is why you don't give a guy 11 million for like 20+ inning of solid play last year.

At some point the Braves won't come out swinging at everything too. They kinda realized "hey we can take pitches" last night but by time they did they were down 10 lol.

There are better stats than batting average that capture a player's offensive impact.

wRC+, on fangraphs for example weighs the different outcomes of a plate appearance differently and coverts into a single number per player where 100 is league average. Springer has been a 134 over his career, 146 in 2020 and 157 2019. This is well above average

With batting average a single and a home run have the same value and walks just don't have an impact at all. With wRC+ a walk is worth slightly less than single but a HR is worth more than twice as much.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong on the specifics, but I like that stat a quick way to see how good a hitter a player is.

zeke posted the wRC+ for all the jays batters over the last two years a few posts after yours.

In all seriousness I'm not sold on the rotation yet since one serious Ryu injury or a bad stretch by Matz/Ray is enough to sink it, but you can't not like what you see so far.

If it keeps going like this Pete Walker might very well be the best member of the Blue Jays organization lol

I don't mind it that much... might as well give him a chance to work through it.

Panik back in over Espinal pisses me off, though. Espinal has routinely looked fantastic at the plate and in the field, but he gets one game at a time and then it's right back to Panik. It's garbage. Espinal was obviously better heading into the season, and now he's proving it and earning more playing time and getting nothing in return.

I think Montoyo has done a much better job this year compared to last with lineups, bullpen, etc. However, the overuse of Panik drives me nuts.

I feel like every manager, even the best, has one guy he just loves and becomes overly reliant on and never gives up on no matter what.

I don’t mind Cavan working things out at 3rd but on Semien off days our best lineup is Espinal at 3B for the defence (no panik) and Biggio at second.

That game was dumb. Snitker's managing isn't the worst calls in the history of the game but holy **** they were so dumb.

Slumps are hard. Most people would tell you Biggio isn't as bad as he's looked over his slump too. His (admitteldy young) career stats paint his as an above average hitter with solid defense.

Difference is, Biggio has shown flashes of being a good to great player whereas Jansen really hasn't thus far. Kirk has shown more potential offensively but he's also a dumpster fire behind the plate as evidenced by the truckload of balls he nearly let past him tonight.
