Don't overthink the #12 thing. The banner is down, and the organization has severed all ties. Can't imagine there's anyone out there clamouring to ask for it if or when it becomes available.

Did this dude seriously try to blame the fact sexual harrassment/is taken more seriously for this? "Current social climate?"

You call that a defense? Gold glover, my ass.

Used to work at a bar in TO that he'd frequently visit and out of the 6-7 girls that waitresses or bartended he hit on 3 of them (all the single ones) to the point where he'd get their number because they'd be flattered a celebrity is interested, then be calling them at 3am looking for FWB or a sugar daddy relationship. The dude is a scumbag

The Jays likely don't make this decision lightly given Robbie is the only player in Cooperstown wearing their hat.

What an absolute kick in the dick. Take his name down and put Joey Bats up there

Makes sense. The reason the Jays are severing ties with him is because he directly represents them and logically they don't want him screwing up their brand. Whereas in the case of the Hall he's a drop in the ocean of all time greats.

TL;DR - when you think Jays, you think Alomar. When you think hall of fame there's numerous guys along with Alomar that come to mind. Ruth, Griffey, etc

Prospects we're excited to see in 2021 - MLB.com

Blue Jays: Jordan Groshans, SS (No. 3/MLB No. 39)

A foot injury suffered in his first full season and last year’s canceled campaign means we haven’t seen Groshans on a Minor League field since May 13, 2019 with Class A Lansing. He’ll open this season at Double-A New Hampshire, where he’ll show off plus bat speed that could result in a solid average and above-average power. The Jays want to keep Groshans at short as long as they can, but as he gets closer to Bo Bichette’s shadow, expect him to see more third base.

@theaub how much is that Biggio going for

Edit: also for people playing the game, the A's collection just become a lot easier to do since Chapman apparently tanked in price and is no longer a diamond.

Retired numbers, levels of excellence aren't some objective, emotionless, tip of the hat to past players. It's about nostalgia and mythology. For too long, sports, among other industries, have been willing to overlook a lot in order to keep that mythology alive. Thankfully, the world is changing. Uplifting and promoting Alomar's on field play feeds into the mythology that overshadows reality. It would be simply impossible to leave those banners hanging and pretend it's not at least partially allowing mythology to give cover for his off-field actions.

Should also be noted that Alomar has been accused of giving HIV to a woman and allegedly pulled a knife on his wife. He wasn't exactly a saint before this. Oh and there's the whole spitting on an umpire and then mocking his dead and ill children through the media (one of which wasn't public knowledge at the time)

Still in favor of taking his name down and replacing it with Bautista...whenever Joey accepts he isnt good enough for the majors anymore. Shit sign him to a one day contract and let him play one more game. Make a spectacle of it and let one of the reasons why those shitty Jays teams in the early 10s were watchable us get his due.

Edwin and JD also deserve their names to be in the level of excellence.

Imagine a guy with lots of money trying to hook up with hot girls. Crazy. I dont know what the allegations are against him but your story has no correlation.

The stuff from 10 years ago was so strange, especially post-#metoo. Multiple women accused him of having HIV and exposing them to the virus, he refused to take an HIV test and settled a bunch of lawsuits, it was briefly a kinda-big story .... and then it just completely disappeared, like it never happened.

Alomar gets inducted into the BHOF, is brought back to the Blue Jays fold as a highly visible ambassador, works for the league ... and then gets brought down now by allegations that seem much less serious than the ones from a decade ago. Weird.
