Thinking back to his Brampton days, it was rare for Butler to name an OA as captain. In 15 years I think an OA was captain in only four of them. He generally had 19s as captains. I think Cody Hodgson was the captain at 18, but he may have been the only one.

Can’t see it being a 19 year old this year though.
Good insight. Thanks.

The recent situation for Erie is an indictment on the quality or lack thereof leadership in the room the past 5-6 years. That doesn’t mean nobody has had leadership skills but it’s clearly been lacking. Despite rebuilding for 6 years, which means naturally having more younger players or higher picks, the team hasn’t had 1 of those guys get the C? I’m sure Drysdale was the closest and probably does get the nod if not for COVID but short of that.. nobody has taken ownership of this team, org and city to warrant the C. The OAs get it because they have the most experience and by default, the most confidence or wisdom to be vocal enough to get the title. Idk it’s not the #1 reason they have been losing but it has to be up there in like the top 5? top 10 reasons?

I like the current vibe of this roster because it’s young, has some star potential, and there seems to be more camaraderie and natural leadership. Seeing Spence and others being there to greet Schaefer was a good sign. Even Fimis who just joined in January. Seeing Terrance send in a video was also a good sign. Now seeing Schaefer, as part of his press conference, say he will be part of the team but embrace and be involved in the community .. All great signs. Hope the future is lighting up

Does anyone know how the Otters have a 2nd round pick in 2023?

This pick (and others) were traded to the Oshawa Generals on 1/9/17 in the Anthony Cirelli deal. Erie Acquires Anthony Cirelli from Oshawa – Erie Otters

When did the Otters get this pick back?
They were conditional. On the basis that if/when Erie picked up a 2nd rounder in an earlier year, Oshawa would get that. I don’t remember when Oshawa got a 2nd earlier but probably part of the T Raddysh trade when Erie got all those 2s back. So essentially Erie had no other 2nds in 2017 so they had to trade wayyyy ahead of time for 2023 draft (back when the OHL didn’t cap how far out you could trade your picks) but under the understanding with Oshawa that once we got earlier pick back —- which was inevitable in the sell off years —- we would bump up when Oshawa got their 2nd back. Oshawa long got/used the pick. Erie then got their 2023 2nd back. Make sense?

As far as I can tell, the 2nd was acquired from SSM, and it was their own 2nd, when they traded Taylor Raddysh and Jordan Sambrook for 9 picks and Hayden Fowler at the deadline in '18. Otters Trade Raddysh and Sambrook to Greyhounds – Erie Otters

If it wasn't from this trade, then it could have been the conditional pick acquired from Oshawa in the Hayden Fowler trade. It was listed as a conditional 5th in '23 but it may have bumped up to a 2nd. That '20-21 season was cancelled and he would have been an OA so I don't know how exactly that played out. Erie Otters: Why Hayden Fowler Was Traded.

This explains the conditions on the 2 trades I just posted right after you made this one.

It was def part of what I explained but I just don’t know what year/player it was that got Oshawa their earlier second. I used Raddysh as an explain but could have been someone else. Was NOT part of Fowler deal

Based on what I’ve read, seems like a reach at 24 but again that’s par for the course for this team the last few years

I'm a bit confused by the pick. According to elite prospects he was the 50th ranked prospect. He's listed as Alfano sized...

I have to question the scouts on this one, unless he was a guaranteed report and not a swing and miss like Logan Sawyer was last season.

yeah the rankings are all subjective so I wouldn’t point to just one but there were several that him in the 3/4 range, not 2nd let alone 24th overall.. so that range by elite prospects seems to fit.. He definitely has to be a player they are super confident will report given the Sawyer thing last year and the state of the franchise. But that doesn’t make it a good pick. I’m sure many others would report too and you could still maybe get Royston in round 4. I’m just tired of us reaching in the 2nd, especially when we have had limited assets with the high picks. When was the last great 2nd rounder we took? Adam Pelech in 2010.

Fun fact:
Schaefer, the 1st D off the board, went 8 picks before the next D was taken. That is the largest gap of picks between the first picked Dman and the 2nd picked D taken in the OHL draft since 1995 (!!!)

Like I said, Erie at least got the clear consensus best D in the draft. Time will tell how it works for them but just thought it was interesting to see the gap between him and the next D taken

I haven’t met Schaefer in person, but I know sponsors who were at his first announcement press conference and watched the press conferences. He seems excited to be coming to Erie which is a good sign. We needed a D and soon enough he can QB the PP. He could learn a lot from Sova and like you said earlier, it was good that his teammates showed up for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if they all met up at Erie Bank Sports Park a few times this summer to skate and train together.

Erie does a good job at picking kids who have good character. Of course they’re here for hockey, but a lot of the players will say after their time in the OHL the person they became through the process is most important. Making the NHL is top goal, but we haven’t developed many to that level in recent(post 2017) years.

It seems like this team is starting to get close as a group, at least by appearances. And the one thing I appreciate about SB is he appears to be a no nonsense type of guy to the media and has that rep with players too. His recent interviews really caught my attention just with his tone and attitude and I wonder if this group, given the combined character and talent, is finally the one to break through and make progress next year. Maybe it just comes down to SB demanding more and the players have a bit more selflessness to respond to it

Erie with 3 picks in the next 20. This is a critical part of the draft for them. Have to hit on at least 2 of their between 2-5th rounds. Have zero clue who it will be but I’ll guess they go FWD first (64th) and probably a G soon here.

It’s his way or the high way. I think when Gilmartin ran his mouth and SB told him to get showered and suited up really set the precedent. With this group, I think having summer sessions in Erie can help build that bond early on before the start of the season.

It helps when your best players are your leaders. I see that potential with 10, 17 and now Schaefer

Spence needs to become more of a 2 way player. You saw that in Fimis, Molnar, Terrance, Artichuk, Saganiuk, Gilmartin and even a few others. Their backcheck was as deadly as their ability to forecheck. No doubt the offensive upside is tremendous, but his back check and defensive play are horrid. He is extremely lazy when it comes to team defense. Maybe that was just year 1 adjustment, but probably his biggest flaw as a player.

The BIG D that Butler wants first?

Yeah but I think for a rookie, that’s at least half expected. I have confidence in his makeup that he will learn and grow that part of his game

So now we are drafting overage players? Greeaaat thought processs. I doubt a 2006 would be availble in the later rounds…

Their drafting approach is horrible in recent years holy crap

And thus the reason DB needs cut regardless of SB and/or performance of the team.

Nobody has been saying this??? Maybe 2 years ago he was defended but the past year we all have ripped him
We’ve all ripped on him here but the arm chair Facebook GMs were defending him recently.
