Enough excuses for Andersen and Nylander

Like father, like son. William is as determined to waste his potential as much his father the Swedish Gretzky was. Insane skill but it's starting to get harder to believe he's going to put it all together consistently at some point. Still young though and has time

Reactions: JT AM da real deal
Just one amendment to this presentation. Marner is on the ice way more than the comparables so obviously his totals would be higher. Also, the puck literally lives on stick, again that could inflate things. When you’re on the ice half the game and making a million passes, the odd one might get picked off. Mitch has been great with the puck this year, even his biggest detractors have to concede this point.

And isn’t missed shots just reflective of chances you’re getting?

All true.

Nylander also has the puck all the time. He carries it quite often from one end to the other almost as much as Marner.

He does usually circle back and send the puck to the point with a safer pass, and Marner will take more risks so he will have the puck picked off more.

Love JT and seldom criticise him but he has been a turnover machine lately. I think he needs to sit out a game here and there; "load management". Rielly was at fault for allowing the Zub breakaway which started the ball rolling in the 3rd. You can't allow Zub to come out of the penalty box and have a breakaway in a 5-2 game.

My optomalogist appt in June can't come soon enough. My eyes were bleeding watching that 3rd period ;)
I've been seeing the turnovers too, last night was especially egregious. He just hasn't been taking care of the puck, which is really sad to see. Brutal if we need to sit him, he's 30 years old and should not be struggling this hard. Maybe switch him and Nylander C to W for a game or two, but we're not paying him to sit in the press box. I thought Rielly had a Gardiner night last where he was pretty solid but had a few outrageous errors that ended up in our net.

My eyes were bleeding too :( Rotten game, bag skate them.

I thought after the first few games that Willy made the leap to PPG player, but he still is what he was: an inconsistent 55-70 point winger with great speed, a great shot (which he doesn't use enough) and a need to be treated with a little tough love.

Not the worst thing to have for what he makes, but becoming less essential.

As for Freddy I'll make an excuse if I want to; he's top of the league in starts and minutes, again. We were three points up on Montreal with them having a week off. He was left to dry on goals against 2 and 4, while the tying goal was a scramble and the OT winner was a breakaway.

This would be unacceptable if it was the fourth game of the season but he's played like twelve in a row and he's fried. I'm not opposed to looking for a new netminders either, but give him a break here.

If Toronto had a losing record then I might feel differently. If .901 gets you the W then I'm ok.

Yeah but we can't give him credit if he's crap. It means the team is carrying him. They are outscoring his mistakes.

This is the mother of all misleading stats. Matthews has one of the most accurate shots in the league. Neither Marner nor Nylander are anywhere close. This obviously doesn't factor in by "how much" you missed the net.

Matthews will obviously miss the net more because of the amount of shots he takes.

This is no slight on him or any other Leaf.

It does show however how our perception alters our viewing. If I think Nylander misses the net all the time, it will stick out in my memory everytime he does.

Sometimes your team carries a goalie, and sometimes the goalie carries the team. You cannot blame him for that loss last night. Andersen didn't ask JT to put a tape to tape pass to an OTT Sen now did he.

Or the rest of the team is compensating for his subpar play. Andersen has looked really good some games, less good others.

He looked really bad last night, but I'd give him a pass on that one since he clearly needs a rest

There's no shit to figure out for Taveras. He has alot of heart and determination. The issue with him is lack of speed. The speed of the game has caught upto him. At best he has average speed. The game is getting quicker, new players coming in are getting faster. Whats concerning is the Leafs will be stuck with the contract for another 4 more seasons.
Worst part is, with COVID, there is no way teams will be able to afford that contract right now. We can hope that in 2 years it is a contract that can be dumped

Why is Nylander being blamed here?

My kitchen strainer catches more junk then Andersen. And our Captain was an embarrassment last night. I have withheld my comments about him as he was putting up points, but he had an all around putrid night with some god awful giveaways.

It's funny. For the entire period where Nylander has been stale l, so has JT, the 3rd line as well. But some folks just want to zero in on him - its strange.

As I mentioned in the other thread his defensive metrics are considerably better than the year prior (something folks have long critiqued him for) so this entire idea of him not contributing when not scoring doesn't stand up to much scrutiny. People just see what they want to see

they will never be trading JT. The first legit hometown star to come home in forever in prime (towards the end of prime maybe) they will not do it optically for wanting others to come home. An extreme example mcdavid at 28/29 thinks about coming home but sees JT was shipped off to wherever when deemed not useful anymore. Why would anyone want to have to worry about that.

not saying it’s right but I’d bet a lot of money we see JT retire a leaf

I agree. Be like Fuhr and make the big save at the right time( off the top of my head, the save against Edmonton to keep it tied).

It doesn't matter if it is .901 or 915 as long as the Leafs continue to allow weak shots from the outside.

Last night they gave up too many wide open looks, but for the most part have really limited that this year

Yes he has really dropped off this season ... last year he was so good and he was our best player many a night ... this year notta once ... I don't get it ... he has so much talent but his motor/heart must have some issues ... it is like he has decided to take a back seat role and watch and observe ... so much talent going to waste

Nylander:
1) He's got great tools
2) He's not greatly competitive

I predict he will be extremely frustrating for years to come - showing flashes of brilliance but never being a big time player.

Andersen: if the leafs have any chance of going far in the playoffs, I think they need to make Campbell the #1 goalie. Andersen has no passion in his game. Nor does he even care if he performs poorly. Andersen is not the same goalie when he played for the Ducks. Campbell is at least a fighter when he plays and he gives the team more confidence to make those big stops. Wish we could trade for georgiev or even Kuemper. Its really frustrating to think that our goaltending is what that will lead the leafs to lose everything in the playoffs and it really needs to be addressed. We need a goalie who steps up when it matters and to make those big saves.

Nylander: What a disappointment. He says that he will dominate. Well, where are you Nylander? The most inconsistent player. All talk. He is such a puck hog who handles puck like a grenade. Misses the net like all the time, always giving away the puck, gets bumped off the puck easily and he skates around in circles like a figure skater. If Nylander was performing like Pastrnak then the leafs would be an unstoppable team. Nylander needs to be traded. Really wish we traded him for Dubois.
I also agree Nylander should be traded, ideally for a player like Hyman (we would have definitely had to add to Nylander to get Dubois).
And I agree that I don't believe Andersen is the goalie to take us all the way to the finals.
Unfortunately, and I truly hope I'm wrong, I don't believe that Dubas and Shanahan will get this team to the finals.

Not sure why this thread still exists. Seems like to just vent and group WN because of the dislike for him in with Feddy. WN isn't close to responsible for yesterday. He just isn't.

Honestly, 0.901 isn't good enough if you have aspirations larger than finishing over Montreal and Edmonton. If the goal is a cup, Andersen won't cut it in my opinion.

We fans are short term minded, but it's been a long time since I felt Andersen and Rielly were truly performing to their position as top pairing D and starting G. Unless our offence can be historically good, it will be very hard to overcome these two realities.

Andersen obviously won't be here next season, so we just have to deal with him in the meantime. But for the money we're paying Tavares and Nylander they have to perform. Unfortunately Tavares' contract is trade/buyout proof limiting our options.
