Did you see his reactions in the pressbox during the playoffs? Did that seem like a stress free individual?

Obviously the job caused him stress. Let me rephrase. I don’t believe the in caused him stress to the point where he wants to quit. I think he recognizes the job is stressful and accepts that part. But it seems like he was unaware until recently how much of a toll it was taking on his family.

From all accounts and all insiders it seems like Dubas was set to accept the extension until his family mentioned something that made him need more time. So that tells me something significant was said or happened and he has to consider putting his family first. What in the hell is so wrong with that?

Couldn’t agree more. Too many fans around here are either equally privileged or blind to what’s happening before our eyes.

I WISH I had the option of just walking away from a 4M a year job with access to a private jet, after failing at my stated goal for five years straight. What a world.
His teams set records. His players set records. His coach is the winningest coach in team history. Only failure here is your inability to manage your emotions like an adult. Leafs will be ok whether he stays or he goes. This team is going to win lots of games in the regular season, probably even division titles at some point. Playoff success will come too. Just go and watch McDavid talk about how the Oilers are getting better even tho it doesn't show.

I want to talk about it now because it’s become a road block for a normal offseason and we can’t get around it. Ideally we shouldn’t be talking about it.
The normal offseason does fly by, we likely don't have time for this.

With all the mock trades, debating about players we've never seen play and dick measuring on who was less wrong about the year, this really throws a wrench into our offseason plans.

If only we could move past this into the absolute black hole of activity that is 99% of the league for the next 4-6 weeks.

What, exactly, do you think the President of a Hockey Team does?

Test the popcorn?
Yup. (well, not to the popcorn testing!) His vision for the team should end up being even more prevalent in that role (assuming the President is allowed to hire his choice of GM, with the same courtesy applying for the GM with his coach).

I have to think Dubas is out at this point. He's been left twisting in the wind far too long to come back for another term.

I assume the Leafs are making other plans before making an announcement.

Nobody is forcing you to discuss the GM or the drama.
The GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs, if true, dropped this bombshell without anyone knowing - and he did it publicly. With massive decisions coming up, from a business standpoint, thisi s very troubling (just the fact they want him back is troubling in the first place).

And from a personal standpoint, Dubas needs to do whatever he needs to do as family, health and happiness come first. But if he needs to step back for a bit, what's going to change in the next few weeks to jump right back in. The pressure is only going to intensify

give me a break with this nonsense. you cant handle criticism of your opinions on this message board. Imagine your job performance being a 24/7 topic amongst millions of people daily and you have no way of shielding your family from it. Hundreds of thousands of people telling you "YOU SUCK" "QUIT" "FIRE HIM" you can think you are ready for it. But clearly no on is. Burke, Nonis, Fletcher, Lou etc etc .... all pissy at the media on the way out.

Give me a break as well. I'm sure you and I can go on to social media right now and find numerous posts and opinions mocking your and my most heartfelt personal beliefs whatever they may be. It's never been more true that every single one of us is exposed to a specter of intangible threat than in our current world.

My thoughts exactly. If Dubas can't handle the stress of an amazing career like being an NHL GM then it's not for him. Tons of blue collar folks in Canada are living paycheck to paycheck barely making ends meet to feed their families but poor Dubas can't handle the stress of his 7 figure office job? There's just so many p***yes in this organization who just have to go. Dubas' personality is literally a perfect representation of the team in its current state.

What does that have to do with anything? I’m sorry no one gives a shit about that. And that’s the problem with people in Canadian markets. Your job is not equivalent to a GM job. The stresses are different. Don’t project your feelings of hardship or inadequacy on others in a better situation than you. Keep your head down and keep grinding. It’s life.

Additionally those people’s careers aren’t on display for millions to view and talk about 24/7. It’s not even remotely close to the same thing.

That’s the life he chose, this is no secret that they are nut bags in society that do this, to anyone in the public eye. If his family is being harassed, do I feel bad? Of course. Should he have blindsided everyone by airing it out on national tv, No. Seems like his motives are not genuine.

About JT we don't know what he would do if he was forced into a different role by the next coach. He might just get a bit worse next year or he might be a different player. His game wilted almost the day Keefe over and never really came back. Thats being pretty optimistic of course but it makes as much sense as as that he suddenly grew dumber and slower over the summer of 2019. Of course 47 goals isn't coming back at age 33 but maybe there is more there.

About trading two of the core three you might do that, but does it seem like Shanny is brave or desperate enough and would be supported in that drastic of a change? I don't. Remember he thought running it back was a viable strategy last summer. It kind of seems like he has been brainwashed into Kyles original vision. I think moving one is a monumental sea change for them and unfortunately I don't think they move Matthews no matter how excessive his ask is.

We don't know what Mitch's ask would be because thats a year away so dealing him means that Willie has come in at a good number. If I had to speculate I think "I just wanted what I could get" will make it easy as he will push for Kaprizov/Ranta money and he is so clearly behind them he will become the agent of change. He will be the message to the other two that when everyone asks for too much of the cap, there are consequences now.

Thats the thing though. The chronology of events was that Shanny went public that his core should give discounts for the team to be competitive because "once you retire, thats what you remember and reminisce with your fellow players" and that " this not for everyone, and we are not for everyone"

then the scrip changed. Everyone got paid with less term.

Now the question becomes what is the message? Are they going to go back to Shanny's initial ask i.e. give discounts because we have to put together a competitive team OR we are still going to pay you ridiculous amount of AAV and go dumpster diving to fill out the roster and "hope for the best"

I think the management team needs to have a clear decision and mindset moving forward and not hail marys

For 11M per year for three more years at the wrong side of 30 while slowing down and in all likelihood not being able to play C anymore? Your living in dream land if you think the leafs are getting a haul for that.
Now, I never said the Leafs were getting a haul for Tavares. They'd probably get a modest return at most from a team taking his entire contract. The haul would be the $11M in cap space.

My question is why do people feel blindsided by this LMAO. It has no affect on your life whatsoever. It’s ridiculous. A fan shouldn’t really feel anything towards the comments he made. I really wanna know what was so blindsiding and earth shattering about what he said.

There are people who can't pay their bills, can't feed their kids, have disabilities etc who HAVE to carry on. Dubas will get hired in the NHL again. He makes about 600g's a year. If there's stress effecting his home life, he can afford to step back and take care of his family. The way he went about this announcement, and the timing of it, just doesn't pass the sniff test

It is sad that a team with this amount of talent has pissed it away with a training wheels GM who up until now (appraently) is too loyal and too stuck in his ways. With zero success. Many fans I know have lost interest - if that's sad to you, you do you, I however get it
Question: Who acquires a teams talent?
Answer: The GM.

So acquired lots of talent and pissed it away.
Not sure from what you posted if you are pro GM or against the GM.

Maybe it would have been better for his family if he didn’t trade for Matt Murray. You wanna make it easier on your family ? How about WINNING!

Well, if not for this piece of news we would probably be focusing more on Auston Matthews contract demands and desire to stay, a coaching decision, a possible Big 4 and 10 UFA’s to decide on. But all those things run through the guy who might not be here.

If the NHL season starts and AM doesn't have a contract then this would be the case. But until AM shows up to training camp without a contract extension you are just being insecure.
Matthews' NMC kicks in July 1st. We need to make sure we don't lose a valuable asset for nothing. And if wants to re-sign whats he looking to re-sign for? No point in singing Matthews to the max contract allowed in the CBA because we are going to ruin the cap and won't have enough cap left to insulate lack of scoring from the core pieces with quality depth who can put up production in post season.

We need to be mindful of the salary cap, team composition for success and have a foresight for planning the future of the organization. Competent management group would think long term and make decisions based on that,

Hell Mack took less pay so that Avs can sign his colleagues. he only took 600K more than McDavid so that he doesn't get into trouble with NHLPA

No media has a sniff of what's going on.

That's pretty incredible.

All they have is there might have been a contract extension for Dubas before season's end. That's it.

The fact the GM of the Maple Leafs had no contract beyond this year and no one has a sniff of the contingency plans is mind boggling and shows how far the Leafs org has come to being super private.

GM aside, no available coaches are even remotely linked to Toronto. And there are some good high profile coaches out there.

lol one ignorant statement after another. He is not qualified? the cap juggling this guy is doing is beyond any GM in the NHL. change half the roster with no cap space mid-season? yup. All GMs do that cause its just so easy. Not to mention draft well. Burke and Hunter draft 6'5" goons with no chance of making it to the NHL. Menawhile Dubas has Knies, Woll, Robertson, Niemela, Dennis Hildeby, Roni Hirvonen, Dmitry Ovchinnikov, Ryan Tverberg, Ty Voit, Minten etc etc.

Stress is real. Most of us have to endure it because we need the paycheck making peanuts. Dubas cannot cheat like a CEO and brush of accountability to others and fire them and remain faceless and nameless. He is on an island alone with one of if not the biggest hockey fanbase crying "FIRE HIM" at every turn. So please take what you think you know about a stressful job and write it down and throw away the paper. You are beyond clueless. Clearly never having to RUN a full organization.

lol the money. compensation. that makes it all ok. IGNORANCE IS BLISS
Ignorance seems to be what you're pushing.
He's been around long enough to know exactly what the pressures of the job entail.
I for one don't think Dubas is ignorant and would know exactly what he's gotten himself into.
This season wouldn't be some eye opener for him.

In this case the whole core talent was here before he even became GM.

Tavares isn't getting 80 points with no Willie and no Mitch. Because 1 of those players is likely gone and the remaining one will be glued to Matthews.

I’m not referring to myself or other fans being blindsided, but by all accounts the organization had no idea what he was going to say, that’s not a good look for him. And if some fans feel blindsided they have that right, without fans, this organization doesn’t exist.
