Post-Mortem Monday: Morgan Rielly

*Feeling is all too familiar, but every year, feels just a little bit different.

*says every year you want progress and improvement, individually and as a team. says he does feel that there was improvement this year, but points out that they are in the same spot as usual, so it's hard to dissect that.

*says the hardest part is that he thinks there was a pathway forward through the teams remaining this year. Says when you turn the TV on and see teams still competing for the cup, the emotions kick in and makes the loss tough.

*Disappointed with outcome of Florida series. Credits Panthers for being opportunistic, but says team lacked a lot of stuff, which is why they are standing here.

*Hard to pinpoint what they lacked. Felt the moves Dubas made at the deadline were great. Very hard to identify what they lacked right now, and says it wasn't just one or two things.

*Believes in the core, and thinks everyone else should too. Highlights that we are standing here today talking after losing, so doesn't want to have blind faith & trust in the core. But says there are reasons to still believe in this group.

*Says regular season, and at times in playoffs, and speaking to his teammates after the loss, fuel his belief. Results are all that matters, but his personal belief is that he believes in them.

*Wants to take time to reflect on his own personal season. Says now is a time to think about the team, and what they could have done differently.

*Thinks the world of Kyle. Says what he did for the team this year, from training camp, to deadline, to day, calls him a world class GM. Everything that he did was in the team's best interest, and put team in position to play, and win, and succeed. Ultimately, players were the ones on the ice at the end of the season

Post-Mortem Monday: Auston Matthews

*Says the main goal every year was to challenge and win, so getting out of the 1st round isn't progress.

*Says his intentions are to be in Toronto. Enjoys playing here, and it means a lot to him, and feels like he's reciprocated that to the team.

*Says it's important to get extension done before the season. Thinks it will work itself out in due time. Repeats that he loves playing here and is a true honor being a Maple Leaf.

*Says everyone plays with bumps and bruises this time of year. Says he was dealing with his hand during the regular season and playoffs, but affirms that it was his job to fight through it and contribute

*Calls Dubas a great GM. Praises the culture, and highlights the number of players coming in from other organizations who immediately praise it. Says his experience with Kyle has been "a really positive" one.

*Says that teams that have won before go through a lot of disappointment. Calls it part of the evolution of a team growing and competing for championships year after year. Says it's no secret that they've fallen short many times, but says each is an experience to continue coming back and working hard.

*Says every time you fall short, it feels like a missed opportunity. Points out that playoff losses to Boston and Montreal, where both teams ended up in the final, felt like big missed opportunities, but says every time you lose it feels like one.

*The sense of the organization is very up in the air right now. Doesn't have the ability to comment on what sort, and magnitude of, changes that could be coming.

*Reaffirms belief in the core. Says their belief has never waivered in each other, and he still feels that way.

*Understands hypothetical questions about whether Dubas being here or not next season changes his extension plans, but can't really answer "What if's " right now.

JT to Vancouver is actually not as far fetched as some might think. Aqualini, their owner wants a winning team, want big buzz around the team to sell tickets, want their leader to be more political, their MGT mindset is to build a team with vets instead of drafting and development, and they do have a guy on the team that can be available.
JT for JT and Garland(due to cap) makes sense bc they get a 1C and save close to 2mil on the cap.
I'd even add a 1st. thatd be incredible.

If you're looking for big picture takeaways from today so far: Players are giving Kyle Dubas a vote of confidence, potentially pressuring the organization to get that extension over the line.

Should have had this urgency in the Florida series and this wouldn't be an issue

Pending unrestricted free agent Michael Bunting said Monday he did not hold any contract talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs on an extension this season.

The 27-year-old winger is currently set to hit the open market on July 1 as the two-year, $1.9 million contract he joined the Maple Leafs on in 2021 expires.

He added Monday that he has not thought about his contract situation since the Maple Leafs' season came to an end in Game 5 against the Florida Panthers on Friday.

Bunting had 23 goals and 49 points in 82 games during the regular season, adding one goal and an assist in seven playoff games. He missed three games during Toronto's first-round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning due to a suspension for an illegal check to the head and sat an additional game as a healthy scratch.

A fourth-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes in 2014, Bunting has 57 goals and 126 points over 182 career NHL games with the Coyotes and Maple Leafs.

He also posted 23 goals, and tallied 63 points, in 79 games last season.

Come on Bunting, no body believes that you haven't thought about your contract.

So Matty said he wants to be back and sign an extension before the start of the season….

That’s basically it then. If he can get signed then you go from there. See if u can lock willy up and if not trade him.
15 mil I would stay to

This makes me think Dubas is staying.
Can’t see Matthews saying this right now otherwise. It’s quite possible Shanahan could resign and move elsewhere.

Murray at 4.7 next year one and done, or Murray bought out costing $2m in 24-25 when new contracts come on books? Tough call.

Was predictable to everybody but Keefe who refused to sit him out during the season.

Gio played all of 8 mins (approx) in Game 5 against the panthers. We could have used Gus' speed and offense. The only D-man besides Rielly who got a goal for you and you sit him in Game 5 in favor of pylons like holl and gio.

I don't even....

Not realistic for JT .. last 2 years of his deal he will play 2/3LW and deal with da wall and blocking shots .. bang in a few on PP .. and then retire .. he ain't going anywhere and he ain't playing C anymore .. best bet we can hope for is he gets hurt and helps us out on LTIR .. it is not that your idear is wrong it is he had to lighten up to get to 215 this past summer which was a huge struggle
Heard any juicy rumours? Any talk?

Post-Mortem Monday: Matt Murray

*Says reflecting on season has been difficult over past few days.

*Is 100% healthy. Came into the season feeling great after a strong summer, and plans to keep it the same.

*Says his season had plenty of ups and downs. Started well, and then had 2 injuries. Says focus was on playing well and taking care of the things under his control.

*Praises Woll. Not an easy position to be in, and thought Woll handled the pressure extremely well. Mature kid who did heck of a job.

* Says not getting the call for game 4 was really tough. Says he knew his role coming back from concussion, was to do whatever it took to help the team win, so he embraced that role.

* Praises Sammy. Calls him a fun guy to be around, formed good relationship. Calls him a very talented kid. Awesome to get to know him.

* Says he felt great, despite not playing since April. Says his practices were very focused and felt great throughout them.

A little bit of competitiveness and work ethic should be the priority, is this what it's all about for this group.

The Bulls pretty much hated each other and it didn't hurt them. In fact, more likely the opposite.

Guys who don't like each other don't hesitate to call each other out and they are more likely to respond to it, even if only to show up the other guy. "Buddies" get together at Tavares' cottage in the summer to politely discuss how they could be better while jet skiing and enjoyed a catered dinner.

I'd suggest the Leafs care less about having all their besties around and focus more on pushing each other to win a ***** Cup before their careers are over. That would start with bringing in a tough, respected leader and slapping the "C" on his chest. Of course with this organization that's a fairy tale, just like a parade on Bay Street.
