someone please convince me that I shouldn't be worried about Hank leaving next year.

Because it is not like the Rangers are Oilers/Flames territory.

They got a lot of issues to solve but Hank is still on a playoff team. Now, he might be one of the biggest reasons why they are but this team still has potential if the RIGHT steps are taken.

This season definitely had it's bright spots. Stepan took huge steps forward, Brassard was phenomenal, Zucc was impressive, Stralman was solid, Moore was great, Nash, at least to me, had a great season, on pace for his best season quite easily, and of course, Hank was Hank. Girardi and McDonagh had off years for sure, but even then they were pretty great.

Hagelin, Callahan, Zucc, Boyle, Powe, Del Zotto, Eminger, and Asham were all meh, no real opinion one way or the other.

Miller and Kreider both had flashes of what they can be, but aren't quite there. I'd keep Miller in the A and stick Kreider with Brass and Nash personally.

Richards was terribad, despite being our #3 scorer. My heart says buy him out, but my head says one more year. Who knows.

As for Torts, he needs to be replaced with a more offensively minded coach. He's a great coach, but fir teams with little to no skill, not the current incarnation of the Rangers.

All in all, I think this season wasn't as terrible as everyone makes it out to be. Compared to last year, sure it was, but that was an entirely different team, and this was only a half season. I believe we were on the uptick when the season ended, but the Clowe, Staal, and Boyle injuries threw the team off. Some moves definitely need to be made, but I think that next season should be a lot better.

We have an infusion of youth coming in to compete for spots next year, which is something we didn't really have this season. Between Fasth, Lindberg, McIlrath, Thomas, and maybe Hrivik, the current roster may be hard pressed to keep their spots. Hopefully it will light a fire under them throughout the season to stay on the ice in the NHL.

If Clowe wants 4.5 for 5 million, he can go **** himself.

Rather use that money to sign Bickell.

I think this is one of the worst UFA classes in some time. It terrifies me that we will buy out Richards then use that cap space to sign Mike Ribeiro or Roy to a multi year deal.

Rangers may make a trade to address some needs. But I don't think I see them making a major splash.

One guy they may sign would be a guy like Streit though.

Regarding Streit, he is kinda of a versatile offensive Dman. But he isn't exactly a dominant one. He has a good shot, but its not overtly scary. His main asset is his ability to hold on to the puck and skate laterally.

He isn't exactly that PP triggerman, but he certainly would have A LOT more experience running a PP than any of our current Dmen.

I still wish Islanders let Visnovsky walk. That would be exactly the type of guy we need.

There is no fire in this team whatsoever. Detroit wants it. They're up 3-1 on "give them the Cup already" Chicago. They are playing like it's a Stanley Cup playoff game. We looked like we're playing a beer league regular season game that is totally unimportant. I really wanted John Scott or Steve Ott at the deadline, because they fire up the team and are locker room leaders.

Yeah Scott would've made all the difference. We probably sweep Bruins with him in the line up.

Leetch was terrible at coverage in front of the net. His 90 season and 91 and 92 postseasons would have this board demanding his head on a plate.

MDZ is not a defensive liability contrary what the professors on this board say in their trade proposals. Leetch most certainly was until Keenan made him commit to coverage. That's why his point totals dropped after 92.

Agree. MDZ is inconsistent. There are parts of the season (last season more so than this season) where he looks like a borderline top pairing. Then there are parts where he's downright horrible and makes bonehead decisions. Growing pains.

Team has many holes but has some interesting pieces.

Defense - MCD, Stralman, Girardi.

Last 3 spots :

Can Staal make a complete recovery?

Can Moore hold up over an entire season?

Can MDZ find a more consistent game or can the Rangers receive an important piece if moved?

Emms is really a #7 defenseman. If he starts the team is a bit weak near the bottom.

Best case... Staal comes back fine. Moore can play on the bottom pair and MDZ is moved in a package for a quality shooter (don't move MDZ unless a need can be filled) . A Bottom pair Dman comes from the minors or through free agency.

Richards truly has no role. I'm not sure how to move him given his contract?

The offense needs to bolster a first line. I see the team without a true first line. My guess is that Nash was playing hurt (struggled to skate) but other than him the first line was elusive.

How to get the PP going? Above my pay grade.

Staal not being in the lineup really hurt both Girardi and MDZ imo. MDZ looked very good until Staal went down.

Couldn't agree more. Girardi looks lost without Staal at times and with Staalsy in the lineup means MDZ doesn't get to play top minutes.

On my phone at work so I'll make this short and sweet. No Clowe and no Staal really hurt us. Especially Staal. A healthy Staal closes out Washington and gives us a fighting chance against Boston. Him out means Hamrlik (who is done) is playing and propels Eminger and to a lesser extent Del Zotto into top 4 minutes. Tough breaks, but injuries are part of playoff hockey.

We need a sniper. Bad. Less expensive than Gaborik. A pure shooter is something this team is really missing. There's nothing really interesting as a UFA. The best option would be Mason Raymond. Far from ideal, but maybe worth a gamble, improves LW depth.

I actually thought our zone entries and breakouts weren't too bad. Moore, McD, and Stralman are all good on breakouts. This team really needs a right handed offensive defenseman, but those don't exactly grow on trees. Cody Franson could've been had two summers ago for next to nothing from Nashville. Sather dropped the ball there, he would be a perfect fit.

More later in the offseason thread

Thats what I said last summer. Sather probably could have made a trade to Toronto last off season when Franson was having some contract disputes. He also could have made a bid for Visnovsky. He didn't do either.

Really stupid not addressing the need for a PP triggerman. It was an issue last season as well.

I'd say Girardi played pretty well with McD, shutting down Ovechkin completely. The problem is, that Girardi is an all heart defender, but he isn't the quickest so he needs a smart partner to cover him. Pairing him with DZ was a disaster from the start.

With all players healthy and Moore continuing to improve we have an excellent defense with two premier shutdown pairs possible. What we lack is offense from the blue line and depth after those first six players.

Im intrigued by the young guys that will be in camp next year. Really looking forward to Fast, Lindberg, Mcilrath, Miller and seeing what they can bring. Hoping we go young next year and start to rebuild the core with our youngin's. Let Clowe walk though, that was a terrible trade. Said it when it happened, and maintain the same now.

I'm really interested to see how Thomas looks in camp. His shot is such a weapon and we desperately need more wingers capable of consistently putting the puck in the net.

The only issue I have with Thomas is his size. He has a lethal shot, but with MZA and Hags already in the lineup I find it tough to add in Thomas. We would be pushed around really easily with such a small lineup, and I dont see Thomas as being an effective 3rd liner.

This hurts because Torts ruined us in the first 3 games...We got screwed with that ****** 4th line and tonight we played better but couldnt put the puck int he net. So dissapointing.

FIRE MIKE SULLIVAN ASAP, and give a hard look to Torts...I feel so bad for Henrik

Well if you mean you can live with his regular season performance only bc he makes up for it come playoff time, I can live with that as well, as long as hes on the 4th line though for 82 games. one of our 2 or 3 best pkers, best center for us on the pk in the defensive zone too. He will prob rebound though, no camp def hurt him.

Why would no camp hurt Boyle but not others?

Streit cannot hold onto the puck. If the Rangers sign him he will end up the Redden of 2014.

Torts and his braindead system is back next year, hence I won't watch that many Rangers games until he's gone. I've had it, it's unwatchable as a hockey fan.

If Girardi demands $5m+ for his excellent defensive qualities and below average to downright bad offensive/ puck handling abilities, you let him walk.

Del Zotto is fine if he has some patience and time and is loose cannon if he stresses his decision. The puck might end up anywhere, so might Del Zaster. His hockey instincts are terrible, hence the talk about low hockey IQ. I would trade him if he's planned to be anything above a 3rd pairing. The rest of the league might not know that, so trade him if he's overvalued. He's not good on the PP either so for a supposed offensive D-man, his shot is awful and his passing very inconsistent (due to his decision making).

With Richards gone, we're back to a questionable center depth. No team with Brian Boyle on the 3rd line is good enough.

All of this doesn't matter of course, since it's guaranteed this teams' offense will suck and the PP will continue to be abysmal. We're back to only having one big gun on offense, which means we're nothing more than a mediocre team that looks at their only true franchise player (Hank) and for how long he can carry a team constantly outperformed and outcoached.

Definitely. Check out the kids on the farm first of all. Give some of these guys a decent amount of games and quality minute to get a handle on what kind of talent the Rangers have.

No more 30+ year old mercenaries. The game is getting too fast and too focused on skill for most of the 30+ crowd. The only good trades to be made are for quality guys aged about 27 or under.
