Elias Pettersson ($11.6M AAV - UFA 2032)

for

SJS
1st Round Pick (1st Overall)

----------

Why the Canucks do it:
Gives them major cap relief which will allow them to sign Lindholm and extend Boeser who is due for a big raise in a few years while also bringing in Aidan's brother with the first overall pick.

Why the Sharks do it:
Speeds up their rebuild significantly and can be a team where Petey thrives as the leader and joins fellow Swedes in Eklund and Zetterlund. They have plenty of cap room to make it work and still have Pittsburgh's 1st.

Yeah, I can't see the Sharks trading away Celebrini.

Now, if you want to talk about Will Smith.

Wasn't Petterssons reasoning about the delay in re-upping with the Nick's is that he was tired of losing? If so, then I can't seeca deal here

Sharks would be fools to trade Celebrini and his ELC. Vancouver would never get that kind of value for their streaky, franchise (?) center who is the fifth highest paid player in the world. He performs nowhere like the world’s fifth-best player, so the contract situation is already burdensome.

San Jose Sharks say no. They're trying to build a young team based around Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Musty, Bystedt, Mukhamadullin, Thrun, Chrona, and some other kids and picks that will turn into kids. Elias Pettersson will be slowing down in the next 4 to 8 years and retiring in the next 12-ish years. Most of the new young group in San Jose won't be slowing down from aging for the next decade. They won't be retiring for 15 to 20 years.

When you have elite players, you want them to be as young as possible so that your team can stay elite for as long as possible. There's no reason to trade Celebrini for a comparable player who is 7 or 8 years older.

Everyone will get their knickers in a twist here but it's a ridiculously easy call for San Jose to say no here.

This team is building for the future. The No.1 pick in this draft is more valuable than pretty much almost every rostered NHL player, to San Jose, right now.

That doesn't mean those players aren't valuable. Of course they are. It all sits in context.

Sharks won't be dealing their elite young pieces.

Celebrini and Smith on the same line?
Could Eiserman slip to 14th and give the Sharks the possibility of Eiserman and Celebrini a year together at BU and a high draft pick for next season?

Easy no for SJS!

ELC only really matters when you're ready to win, Sharks aren't going to be in a position to win to take advantage of the cap savings of Celebrini ELC years. This deal doesn't really suit either teams needs, Canucks are in win now and need to get better next year, Sharks are rebuilding.

100 point player for a some of magic beans. Ok.

Easy thing to post. Look at it from the Sharks side of things. They just started rebuilding. 2nd why would they want a no show for the playoff ? Petry is as much a 100 point player as RNH is which I wouldn't call RNH a 100 point player.

No idea why people make threads like this.

The rebuilding team’s fans aren’t going to want to trade a guy who could be a franchise centre and fits with a hypothetical future window. Especially not for a player who was looking like a 3C tweener for the latter half of the year; injury or not.

Also, the Canucks’ FO aren’t going to trade a player who could bounce back into a routine 100 point guy, who actually fits into their window. There’s no guarantee Celebrini steps into the league and starts playing like a 1C within the next 2-3 years, and even if he does offensively, he’ll probably struggle, like most young players, on the defensive side of things, and Tocchet would probably heavily shelter or even bench him as a result.

Just not a realistic proposal at all.

Canucks aren't dealing our 24 year old franchise C who we just locked up for 8 years. That isn't going to happen.

Boeser isn't in line for a huge raise, he is already at close to 7. I don't see him getting much more than 9 on a long term deal.
