sharks laugh all the way to the draft podium.

Cost controlled Celebrini for 3 years, plus RFA, etc. or a Petey at 11.6 million.
Celebrini may not have the immediate impact that Petterson would, but that doesn't justify the 10m gap in salary.

oh and Pettersson also disappeared in the playoffs.

Sharks already had a core that were playoff choke artists. Last thing they want is a playoff ghost mentoring their up and coming kids

Vancouver
I don’t get why these threads get posted. If a team ready to compete had the 1 OA pick through some means, and Vancouver decided they wanted to re-build, then sure, there would probably be a trade to be made here. But in this case, no chance either team does it, and it has pretty much nothing to do with value.

I think Vancouver would love this, but the Sharks hang up that phone real quick.

We wouldn’t touch this. We have a 100 point center with good defensive instincts locked in for the next 8 years. We’re not trading that for a prospect. By the time Celebrini is an equivalent player, Miller will be not as good, Hughes may be gone due to us not making good attempts to compete, etc. it doesn’t fit our timeline either.

This.
If a team had a strong #1 C, , great wingers, top 4 D and #1 goalie and wanted Pettersson to have a liller 1-2 punch up front, maybe they consider this kind of deal. Maybe.

No one else does.

This is kind of Iginla for Nieuwendyk: a team gets a hall of famer, but the team ready to win gets a great C in his prime. It can happen but only under specific circumstances.

No way, San Jose might do this for next years pick. No way they trading away the first overall pick.

Absolutely not from a San Jose perspective

For a bottom dweller the potential of an 18 year old 1C on an entry level contract is much more appealing the guarantee of a 26 year old 1C on an $11.6M contract

You get Celebrini AND 11.6 mil in cap space to build up your team. Entry level top picks are amazing for contending teams, you just rarely have contending teams with those picks.

100 point player for a some of magic beans. Ok.
100 point player... ONCE.
Please stop making it sound like her is a perennial 100 point scorer. in five full (one shortened season for him) he hit 100 points once.
Not to sound like an jerk but 100 points isn't what it used to be, the game has changed and favors points/ stat totals.

23-24 had 9
22-23 had 11 (petterssons only 100 pt season)
21-22 had 8
20-21 had 1
19-20 had 1
18-19 had 5
17-18 had 3
16-17 had 1
and every year prior essentially had 1 player hit 100 points.

By the time the Sharks are out of the rebuild, Pettersson will be nearing the end of his deal.

The timeline on rebuilds is a lot longer than most fanbases accept, but Sharks fans are pretty realistic.
