Player Discussion: Ehlers

Ehlers used to be my favourite player, but I've lost a lot of respect for him. He's always getting hurt, will not play with any pain, like a lot of other players, and it's a shame he's wasting his talent. I have a feeling this will be a recurring thing with Ehlers. He has the talent to be a 80 -90 point player, and he'll never reach his potential, if he can't suck it up, and play thru some pain. I'm very disappointed in Ehlers, and I've somewhat given up on him. You have to wonder how injured he "really" is ??

Sorry, but this is b***s**t.
You have no idea what his pain tolerance is. You know how many games he has missed. You don't know how much pain he has played through.

he is a band-aid though. i do hope it's nothing however it seems like they have been trying to get him into games and Bowness has been frustrated with the fact he is not participating. i don't think he'd have been that emphatic in his frustration if it was nothing.

I'm not so sure Bones is doing himself any favors airing his frustrations about a players medical condition. Seems his last bit was about it being Ehlers pulling himself from games and not the trainers. That really isn't something he should say to the media.

I think there are a couple of ways to interpret the frustration that Bones is exhibiting. One is as you say, he's frustrated the injury isn't healing faster. The other interpretation, and one that seems to be supported by what surixon posted, is that he doesn't think Ehlers issues are sufficient enough to keep him out. The school of thought (call it old school, whatever) that players will often have nagging injuries and they just gotta play through the pain.

I think Wheeler did a lot to promote that way of thinking. He would play through stuff that many players couldn't or wouldn't. He was the team's Black Knight. Tis but a scratch, I'll bite your leg off. I think the team will miss that "you'll pry this hockey stick from my cold, dead hands" side of his leadership.

So, if the team medical staff have cleared him to play (and I emphasize if), does this indicate there is some distrust between some players and the team's docs/trainers? Or is this a sign that Ehlers simply isn't happy here? He's frustrated with his usage, with not being afforded the prime opportunities given others. Maybe he's asked for a trade and sitting out over minor issues is his way of furthering that agenda. I certainly don't know, just tossing some stuff out there for consideration. Or mocking, as you see fit.

I don't think there's any hockey universe in which Ehlers is a "soft" player. Agree with @Jet and @Nickel eye Heel hers that he's a player whose game is extremely dynamic and at times risky. He flies around the ice, is not afraid to mix it up in the corners or to take on much bigger players, and spends much of every game on the edge. That's his style, it can be incredibly exciting and has been productive, but it takes a toll.

I would describe that playstyle as not "soft," but fearless and not necessarily canny. KFC is brilliant at escaping contact; Ehlers seems at times to seek it, or at least to be pretty careless about risking it. That's a player who cares deeply and who should probably at this point in his career look to play a safer game. Maybe he needs to spend a week with Adam Oates.

As I've said before here, I avoid online diagnosis, but this presentation has always suggested a recovery range of weeks, not days. The Jets have a strong medical team, and they will, among other things, be looking at his recent pattern of injuries as well as this latest one.

Definitely frustrating for player, coach and team, but waiting for a full recovery at this point, while the season is young and games may feel less urgent, is far preferable to rushing him along. They won't do that.

Soft?

You left out one where he takes on a guy in his own weight class.

He knows how to fight. He is at a size disadvantage against a Getzlaff or Schenn. But he is a better fighter than Stanley is.

maybe he got hurt while training for his next big fight? he should be a bit "soft" and not be throwing them given how injury prone he has been.

I agree with everything single word you said except for one word. I would replace the word respect with faith. I've lost faith in Ehlers . But don't disrespect him or lost respect in him. For me losing respect would be like not even wanting to speak to the person. That's too harsh. I don't know him personally or can confirm with 100 percent confidence he is to blame for any of his durability issues. That's my hunch, but I do not loose respect for people on hunches.

The odd thing about Ehlers is even though he seems to have a low threshold of pain, he's also one who actually trys to fight players. Also, IIRC last year wanted to play early in the playoffs and appointed himself fit even though the team wouldn't clear him. (The exact opposite of now)

Aren't you the guy who said that Nolan Patrick just needed to relax and settle down and he'd be fine? Sorry man but you seem really out to lunch on player injuries.

In his earlier years, Scheifele used to play more like Ehlers plays. At some point, Scheifele decided to start playing it much safer, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Most top offensive players add some level of self preservation to their games. From McDavid all the way down. There are still enough players in the league who will take you out if you put yourself in a vulnerable position.

I guess he feels that playing in his own end of the ice is putting himself in a vulnerable position. :sarcasm:

Yes, I think you right, and faith is a better word to use, than respect. I have a lot of respect for Nik's game, but I have been disappointed in him, and I hope he restores my faith in him, as he's a real dynamic player that the Jets need.

Ehlers contract is done at the end of next season. They can re-sign him at the end of this season.

Do you think the Jets will end up re-signing him?

What will his next contract look like? Similar to the last one? 6X6?

I was thinking they'd have to choose between Connor and Ehlers, but with the cap going up, I'm thinking they can re-sign both (if they wanted to).

Would love to see him re-signed. The Jets can probably make it work with the both of them signed long term. There is a good chance Dillon isn’t coming back, Schmidt is a likely candidate of being bought out. Offer nik 7-7.75 for 5-7 years.

I would also understand if Ehlers would want to go to UFA. I believe his skill set isn’t fully utilized and their might be another team who is a bette fit for #27 (Nik has been my fav player since big buff left)

There is no indication Ehlers isn’t happy with the Jets. He is also now getting prime usage in the run up to his next contract. I’ll guess 7 X $7.85 AAV.

A raise is definitely in order, it has been a long time since he signed his last deal. I think that $7.5-8.0M range would be about right. Maybe even more if he has a hot 2nd half of the year or playoffs and can stay healthy

Nik Ehlers is probably my favorite player. He's a hard guy not to like.

However, any talk of $7+ is too rich for my blood and I don't think the best use of our money.

He hasn't cracked 60 points in what looks to be 5 going on 6 years and has a history of significant lost time due to injury.

For me its 4 -5 years at $5-6 per year to see the value of retaining his services over the risk of blocking our young skilled players developing on the Moose, college or junior league.
