Hate the trade in Isolation because I've been extremely vocal about the idea of moving assets for the expiring contracts of players that don't significantly upgrade the team.

That said, if it's a move aimed at making Brodie expendable, I'm much more here for it.

To St. Louis
1st round Pick
TJ Brodie
David Kampf

To Toronto
Colton Parayko

Playoff D-Core

Rielly / Parayko
Edmunston / Lyubushkin
McCabe / Liljegren
Benoit

While far from what a team like Vegas can ice, that looks much more like an NHL playoff d-core to me. The infusion of 3 big guys that play a heavy game, break the cycle, defend the crease area well... 2 of whom have Stanley Cups.

When you play a Boston or a Florida in a 7 game series, you absolutely need those types of guys, because they're going to be running your goalie, taking runs at guys like Matthews, Marner, etc... You need guys that will punish their forwards in the same manner.

The problem is that was years ago.
From those that watch him, apparently he's fallen off badly since then.

Not saying - yet - that it was a bad deal, but someone has to go as it makes no sense moving those picks for a 7th d-man. And right now there are already 6 spots taken.
Gio is completely fried, there's no way we can play him in the playoffs

We have at the moment

Rielly, Lily, Brodie, McCabe, Benoit, Lyubushkin, Edmundson, Gio, Lagesson

Gio and Lagesson are the odd guys out, there will be guys getting hurt in the playoffs so Edmundson is a solid addition. Also this might sound crazy but I think Brodie is on his way out, he's been declining since last year and we have a log jam at LD, with the Parayko rumors it just makes too much sense.

Solid addition, guy is a big physical mean D man who knows how to keep the front of the net clear.

For the people crying about this addition, go rewatch our series vs Montreal, this guy and Chiarot were a f***ing nightmare in the blue paint. Expecting him to get a few penalties for cross checking, but also punish the opposition in the crease. Big boy who knows how to use his weight and plays a mean game 75% retained, he will be important in the playoffs.

I’m not crying personally per se, but I am a little confused. This deal to me doesn’t make sense if we are keeping all the rest of our D and maybe we aren’t. The price is ok if he’s going to play a regular role. If he is just depth beyond our regulars then I don’t like it much.

My guess is the people complaining would complain no matter what we do. Because that's their specialty. Glass half empty people. Go outside and get some vitamin D. This board is depressing.

Keep in mind there’s still a very strong contingent of the Kyle Dumbass Fan Boi Brigade who are extremely bitter that Treliving is the GM.

Leafs could acquire McDavid for Brodie, Bertuzzi, Minten, Cowan and a few draft picks and the Fan Boi Club would still flood the board with complaints about how Treliving screwed up by sacrificing the future for McDavid.

Who would even be going out? Rielly, McCabe, and Liljgren would be the only ones with any semblance of trade value

Like I said, it seems like Brodie is going to be moved. 5M cap hit and McCabe is a very capable 2nd pairing LD. Brodie + for Parayko just makes too much sense. Leafs probably add a 1st +

If we did this and DONT move Brodie for help on the top pair, then yeah it's a f***ing disaster, but it seems like a depth add to allow for some flexibility in the lineup as well as opening up more trade options.

The obvious would be Brodie, not because he has value but moreso because he makes 5M, expiring contract and can offset cap

Bottom line Edmundson is a playoff warrior .. really all we need him for is to stop da Bruin and Cats cycle on da boards and then clear da net .. he is still a beast for strength although i am told he has lost a step .. he will play with Rielly .. Joel stops da cycle and Rielly/C pick up loose pucks .. and when he is not stopping da cycle then he is clearing da net so Sammy can see all shots .. bottom line those 2 skills against Cats and/or Bruins are da most important ones we need .. Joel Rielly .. McCabe Benoit .. Brodie Boosh .. folks sorry to say but Lily won't play again in 1st and 2nd rounds this year .. Gio may get a game here and there for Brodie .. overall this gives us a fighters chance .. a big nasty defensive D who can work wall and net front .. well done Tre .. well done Tre

Given we picked up a LD we didn't really need, it seems logical that we are going to move one.... Whether it's for Parayko, or another player, I'd guess a RD is coming. and Brodie moving out is the cap room to make it happen.

Edmundson and Boosh help, they give a needed aspect. I just want to see the end game here. What else is potentially falling into place? Cause I feel like that is key, otherwise these two on their own were a wee bit expensive, but yes they do help with that missing element.

lol, Benoit as the 7th dman

It does, however swapping Brodie out for another D doesn’t get Edmundson into the lineup necessarily. That’s 1D in, 1 out.

Lagesson has been alright so kinda sucks for him. Hopefully someone grabs him and he gets to play the rest of the year on a bottom feeder.

I look at the blue lines of contenders the last few years and a common thread is size. They are all fairly big and mean.

I like that this team is being built with some snot now. In my opinion we need more of it up front than on the back end but maybe that will still be addressed. We need a hard and mean forechecker. Sam Carrick would have been a nice get out of Anaheim.

In 2022, we took Hildeby with our fourth & Grebenkin with our fifth - these are real prospects.

Mid round picks have value.
But but but what assets? Mid round picks are worthless.....

That's where you extend your contention window. Picking up a point or an oettenger etc. hard but impossible without picks

I have heard from many hockey friends that Tre has been trying too move Brodie all season but there are no takers .. but at TDL it becomes a CAP thing not a player thing for non playoff clubs
