Both Boosh and Edmundson are UFA’s after this season?

So our D corps that is signed for next season is currently:

Rielly-Liljegren
McCabe-Benoit
Lagesson-Timmins

Yesh……

There are more moves on D coming. Book it.
Lagesson is not signed past this year, and it sounds like he'll be on waivers at 2 p.m. as well.

But yeah, it certainly needs improving

You don't think they'd run something like the following?...

Rielly / Parayko
Edmundson / Lyubushkin
Benoit / McCabe / Liljegren

Size, cycle breaking and defensive net front presence on every pairing. A completely different defensive mindset from the previous regime.
Also there will be a big locker room/culture change as well. We've added guys in the past, 1-2 players here and there. But there is a massive difference in this teams attitude and make up, in comparison to the Dubas teams.

Benoit, Edmundson, Lyubushkin, Reaves, Bertuzzi, Domi, Gregor (I know he hasn't played recently) but that is a big difference. You think the goalies aren't going to feel more confident with those bigger bodies around the net and just the nastiness they play with. Our defence is a lot bigger, heavier and dirtier.

If Lily gets traded I will riot. He's still extremely young, I think he's gonna be like a prime Brodie at his peak. He's going to be 25 and likely won't peak until 27-28, I think we'll regret trading him.

Brodie absolutely needs to go though, him and Gio are completely done at this point. Gio made some massive mistakes in the Panthers series last year as well.
I too would do everything I can to not move Liljegren, while adding a top pairing RHD. I think Liljegren will continue to improve and can be signed to a reasonable deal. He looks like a top 4 defender at times and he's trending in that direction.

I wouldn't mind heading into next season with 5 of 6 looking like...

Rielly / Parayko
FA / Liljegren
Benoit / McCabe

If you land a solid FA, that could be a really decent defense core.

SCOUTING REPORT

Has the size (64) and strength that coaches love in a shutdown defenseman. Is a physical force in his own zone who is at his best when he keeps things simple and does not try to do more than he is capable of. Will never be an offensive force but is an acceptable puck mover who can play 20-plus minutes per game and is a good match for an offensive partner.

Long Range Potential : Big shutdown defenseman.
He's a 4 or 5 guy, makes the team tougher to play against. is a LD but can play right side. The kind of dman that Brad likes, big, tough, defensive minded.

The way the D is structured today does not make a lot of sense, there has to be more moves coming. Down the left side Rielly, McCabe, Brodie, Edmunston, Benoit. Lageson

That might very well turn out to be the case. That's why I was against moving assets for "meh" players, while teams like Vegas and Tampa simply target and subsequently land studs.

It’s better for the Leafs to stay out of the arms race right now. Only one team per conference makes it, and past history is not favourable to suggest this team can win 2 or more rounds even if they go “all-in”.

I'm one who believes the Brodie hate is a bit much. However, when he received the puck at center ice in overtime and decided to stop skating, held onto the puck for 3 steamboats and then gave the puck away in the neutral zone, I almost put my foot through the TV.
Brodie is a great guy but his best days are behind him. He really started slowing down last year and was straight up atrocious in the playoffs, but to be fair McCabe was also horrible vs Florida as well.

It's not really hate, he's just not what he used to be when he first came here. Even early on last year he looked good, but after January-ish, he really started slowing down. He just doesn't do enough for 5M, and for a team that has minimal cap space, we can't afford him on the blue line if we want to be real contenders.

I don't want them "all in". I want them packaging a series of assets for impact players, with term, that fit the prime years of Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly.

Those guys are expensive, but they're how you become a Tampa Bay or Las Vegas. You don't accumulate the talent on those rosters by trading all of your 1st-3rd rounds picks, for multiple years, on expiring players and depth guys. Because when a Hanifin, McDonagh or Parayko become available, you might not have the assets you need to be in those sweepstakes, because you wasted them on a bunch of depth pieces on expiring contracts, none of which you could retain. Toronto needs 1-2 legitimately proven NHL Defensemen and they also need to find a way to address their goaltending.

I think Edmundson will do an adequate job for us. He’s got a cup ring from St. Louis and he was part of the Montreal bubble team that beat the crap out of the Leafs. Fair to say he knows how to play the kind of games the Leafs expect to be in. Does he solve all our problems now and forever on D? Hardly. But people hated the Schenner deal last year and see how that worked out.

With the hype and talk it’s like we were going to get a guy who could solve all our problems. This isn’t it. But it makes us better.

I want to be positive about Edmundson because on paper he seems exactly the kind of Dman that the Leafs need for the playoffs. On the otherhand looking at Caps fans talking about him on their board, I'm not so confident. Here's hoping a change in teams will help him play better and be a positive contributor on a long playoff run. 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏

Is that the plan, though, to use him as Rielly's new Hainsey/Schenn?
