I think he can play the right side too, which likely factored into this. Depth guy but physical and has an edge which we need.

Key word being other organizations... if OUR organizations can't hit on them, then what good are they to us?
If only for trade purposes, better, younger and/or healthier targets that leverage third round percentages in our favour.

But more’s the point, emulating other successful clubs’ draft strategy?

His poor play in recent seasons aside, why more depth? Who's not playing? Like I'm fine with adding depth for a playoff push, especially on D, but shouldn't that supplement actual moves to like... improve the team? I'd be fine going for it during a prime year with a healthy core, and I'd be fine running with what we've got in a year where we've taken a step back and have more holes to fill. But we don't seem to be doing either, and if we're not patching actual holes to try and go for it this year, then I'm not sure the point of using assets on going for half measures... or quarter measures...

I guess we'll see what tomorrow brings, but I'm not sure what's even out there anymore that fits our actual needs.

This team is a serious waste of time, until Tavares’s contract comes off the books we can never afford anyone who will move the needle, first round exit incoming.

It has nothing to do with cap. You can move salary out if you wanted to acquire someone with a heavier cap. The issue is a willingness to burn assets and picks on guys who are going to end up walking.

If there were players with term available do you not think we’d move Heaven and earth to get them? We moved everything to get Accari, O’Rielly, Schenn, Lafferty and McCabe. All we have to show for it is McCabe.

I see two problems, Toronto isn’t an ideal situation for centers to sign here. What Center wants to sign to be the third option, with zero or limited PP time? That’s the reason O’Reilly left. He knew he was going to be 3C and also get zero PP time.

IMO Brodie/Liljegren and Robertson plus maybe our first for an impact forward with term is the only play. If they can some how convince Philly to trade them Konecny I will cry. But I think that’s probably the best fit salary wise. It’s a better fit than then Parayko trade IMO.

Edmundson has a lot of limitations as a player but he does tend to shine more in the playoffs and he undoubtedly can protect the crease better than any of our other defensemen. I’m curious to see how our pairs shake out come playoff time. Can’t say I’m a big believer in our D-corps

Rielly - Lyubushkin
Benoit - McCabe
Edmundson - Liljegren

Not sure where Brodie really fits here…
Agree this is the optimal lineup barring anymore moves.

Brodie is a great 7th man though incase of injury because of his versatility and experience. But he has fallen way off needs to sit.

This would require one to actually watch hockey and follow what happens after the Leafs get bounced in the first round, but here is Edmundson fresh off winning the actual Stanley Cup:

And then here we have a picture of a career NHL playoff loser who hasn't even so much as sniffed the Stanley Cup:

Sweet Calder!
Now post a picture of the dudes who actually won it for them like Petro and Binny and ror lmfao.

What a joke

Is that the plan, though, to use him as Rielly's new Hainsey/Schenn?

By and large Rielly needs to sort his own shit out. He needs to be able to find his game when time comes. The talking point around number one defensemen isn’t what kind of babysitter is needed to play with them usually. Mo has to step up.

In the end, maybe the Leafs end up going with a roster full of heavies on D. They had success when Rielly was out. Maybe they can just roll three equal pairs of McCabe and Benoit, Edmundson and Lyubushkin. Rielly gets Brodie. But maybe we see one more acquisition. Right now we have too many bodies and Liljegren and Brodie don’t seem to be fitting well.

Honestly the Rielly - Lyubushkin pair has done really well. Brodie - Liljegren has been a disaster. I’d still love to acquire Parayko to pair with Rielly but if no more moves outside moving Brodie which could be wishful thinking I wouldn’t be too upset. The blueline is big, physical and hard to play against now.

And like with St Louis, he'll be relied upon as depth for the heavy lifters to get the job done (our three, soon to be four players earning over $10 million a year)....

So far ours haven't come anywhere close so hopefully that changes but the hope is the new GM can improve upon our last failure GM's lack of understanding how to build a playoff roster.

The good news is that, unlike most players that people claim are better in the playoffs, there is at least some actual historical basis to it with Edmundson.
The bad news is that we haven't seen him in the playoffs since 2021, and he's really taken a downward turn since then.
Fingers crossed that for a stretch, he can turn back the clock. And that he doesn't now get called for everything that he was allowed to get away with elsewhere.

The fact he was considered for the captaincy in Montreal after their finals run is a good intangible as well.

We will finally see if a big D makes a difference, this is easily the biggest/heaviest/toughest group we seen here with this core.

He's 30 as well.

He does in the playoffs, so while I'd rather he play the same way in the regular season, whatever.

Funny to see how Treliving pivoted from blowing all that cash on Klingberg to getting all the tall guys. We'll see how that works out what with the history of Leafs D (save Rielly) being unable to transition the puck in the playoffs and all of the offense drying up.

We are replacing Brodie with Edmundson? So we paid a 3rd and a 5th to downgrade our defence?

I wouldn't disagree, but stylistically, it helps if he or any dman with offensive flair has a partner that compensates for some of their misgivings.

He seems most comfortable when playing with a minder that can clear the crease and break up cycles. Whether that's the intention with Edmundson, though, isn't clear.
