That’s going to be brutal in a couple years

Wtf is Holland doing???

Hyman, Barrie and Ceci? Definitely didn’t get better than last year…

Turned Larsson into Ceci, are losing Klefbom, and signed Hyman to that bad long term deal

Agreed. People said the same thing about the Lucic, Eriksson and Neal signings. Typical HF overreaction.
Don’t forget Ladd & Okposo. There’s some real doozies out there that this ones gonna rival as one of the worst deals in modern ufa

Yeah, as an Oilers fan who rarely posts outside of the team's board, I have a hard time swallowing this one, but there does seem to be a fairly sizeable contingent of fans who think he'll be a good fit, at least for the first few years. Still, it remains to be seen what other signings and deals Holland has up his sleeve before I can declare (at least to myself) that this off-season is a disaster.

Considering Holland's track record of late, I'm not hopeful.

At least my dad, a life-long Leafs fan, is delighting in harassing me over this signing, so I guess that's a positive? :scared:

Yeah, it was. Edmonton isn't in your division... you're woefully short on picks.

Sure -- in an ideal world, you set the compensation before they get to determine a contract, but once you've ####ed that up, take whatever you can get and talk up a learning lesson. You're out there to improve your team, not hurt the oilers.
Not at all. 5ths and 7ths can be fabricated in thin air by moving back in the draft… Toronto management isn’t interested in doing anyone any favours for something they can literally create for themselves at any time.
They might be short on draft capital NOW, but they just took 11 players last draft so it’s okay taking a smaller batch for a a year or two as well.
Not to mention how Toronto’s a European and college FA destination backfilling tbe depth chart with late picks isn’t needed. neither was doing Ken Holland any favours

This is funny. But it will stop being funny when we give Blake Coleman 7 years and 6 million

Nobody is suggesting that Dubas should go out and sign Hyman, then retain $500k and trade him to Edmonton for nothing.

However, as a GM, your #1 priority must ALWAYS be your team -- not avoiding helping somebody else.
He helped his team by allowing a competitor to chew up more annual cap space than they wanted to truly burn up. He also didn’t aggravate the other 15 GM’s Edmonton’s competing with for a playoff spot. there’s more to every move than what’s in front of you.
that’s how you get GM’s like Holland going for the instant gratification of overpaying guys like Hyman on crushing long term deals and GM’s like Dubas who 4D chess their way out the expansion draft only losing a middling prospect and the 220th or so pick in a draft down the line.

Come on... rationally, talking only about on ice... next year vs this past year:

Hyman >>> Kahun. And not close.
Barrie = Barrie. Fact
Keith >>> Russell or Lagesson... not really arguable
No Klefbom = no Klefbom. Fact
Ceci << Larsson. A big loss for sure
Bouchard > Bear. Oil fans in love with this lineup change.

Plus if the return for Bear is Foegele, then Foegele >> Neal

Tallying it up:
2021/22 Oilers: >>>>>>>>>
2020/21 Oilers: <<

Six years in Looch can still take a regular shift, albeit on the third line. Dollars to donuts Hyman is Ltir by then, or just so broken down he’s useless and unplayable

If he retires or LTIRs remind me again what the effect is on our cap? Oh right... it effectively disappears.

So I guess you agree with Holland... the downside of this deal is likely avoidable.

I love how everyone is trying to sh*t on the Oilers for signing a quality forwards albeit a few years too long... then you look through HF free agent talk and see ludicrous contracts being signed by lesser players on other teams and hear crickets.

Hyman is far from some of the worst contracts in hockey.

Ceci<<<<<<<Larsson. It ain’t close. The defense is very very bad. Keith is nothing more than a bottom pairing guy, Ceci shouldn’t be in anyone’s top 6 Defense, Bouchard hasn’t proved a thing, Barrie is Barrie. No improvement on the blueline.

Hyman gets that much!? He is not even close to that good of a player. He just rode the coat tails of playing with Marner, Matthews, and Tavares. But I guess he can do the same in Edmonton.

They can also be used to move up in a draft to get a player you really like. They can also be used to push deals over the top, like they were used extensively this year.

When dealing at the deadline, draft picks are a much easier commodity to deal than prospects who a team may or may not like.

Poor Oilers fans, they never catch a break.
ya 3 number 1 picks in 5 years, and only 1 of them is generational! just terrible luck....

Picks made by the Leafs, in the 5th round or later, in the past fifteen years, who turned out to be regular NHLers:

Viktor Stalberg
Leo Komarov
Carl Gunnarsson
Connor Brown
Andreas Johnsson
Pierre Engvall

There's others, of course, but it just seems closed-minded to toss away a free lottery ticket without first checking it, y'know?

1. Half the guys on your list were taken more than a decade ago
2. None of these guys is very good outside of maybe Connor Brown who everyone knows is basically a miracle pick in the 6th round

Bouchard is fine. He should have been a regular last year in their lineup.
