Why is a contract like this a surprise?

Bad weather, boring city and taxes. The Oilers don't appeal to many and so they need to overpay a bit.

Ceci<<<<<<<Larsson. It ain’t close. The defense is very very bad. Keith is nothing more than a bottom pairing guy, Ceci shouldn’t be in anyone’s top 6 Defense, Bouchard hasn’t proved a thing, Barrie is Barrie. No improvement on the blueline.

Are you interested in an intellectually honest discussion or not?

1) <<<'s only go to three. If you want to say Ceci <<< Larsson that's fine.
2) Keith is stepping in for Lagesson/Russell who were forced into second pairing duty. Keith was still first pairing in Chicago, so the utilization does not support your bias. In Edmonton he's taking a needed step back to ~20 mins a night rather than the 23 he played last year. As I said... if you are intellectually honest, you can acknowledge that.
3) Bouchard looked very good in his limited action
4) I agree, no improvement on the D... it's about net neutral in my eye: Keith, Ceci, Bouchard = Larsson, Bear, Russell/Lagesson
5) You didn't comment at all on the forwards, since it doesn't suit your narrative, but it is not arguable that: Hyman, Foegele >>> Kahun, Neal

1. Half the guys on your list were taken more than a decade ago
2. None of these guys is very good outside of maybe Connor Brown who everyone knows is basically a miracle pick in the 6th round

1. Regardless, they still ended up being serviceable NHLers - that are still active, mind you, so that's even better. 5th round or later, drafted over a decade ago, and they're still going. Not bad.

2. Any draft pick after the 3rd or 4th could be deemed a miracle pick if they turn out to be NHL regulars. I agree it's quite rare, but it does happen.

I'm not saying Dubas threw away a sure-fire top six player but he chose to let Hyman leave for nothing instead of salvaging something for him. What Edmonton would choose to do with his rights, after acquiring them, should be irrelevant to how Dubas runs his team. And his Leafs just came off an entry draft that only saw them make three picks.

By contrast, Dallas went in with 8 picks and left with 10.

Just sayin'. :dunno:

As expected, Holland blows his load on Hyman.

I'm a huge Hyman fan and he is a very good player. He'll definitely help the Oilers.

But everyone knows this contract isn't going to age well...not that Holland cared. He'll be retired or fired by the time he has to deal with it.

Like the player but not the contract. Welcome to Edmonton. Please prove you aren’t Lucic v.2 with this deal.

For all the complaining that’s going to happen the forward core is really shaping up to look good. Hopefully a goaltending improvement happens and somewhere a Larsson replacement is found.

Hyman - McDavid - Puljujarvi
RNH - Draisaitl - Yamamoto
Foegele - Holloway - Archibald
Benson - McLeod - Kassian

1) I am being realistic, Larsson is a top 4 shutdown defenseman, Ceci isn’t even an NHL defenseman..I’ve been saying that for years.
2) Keith is better than Russell yes but still nothing more than a bottom pairing guy.
3) Fair
4) Agreed
5) Yes your forward group has improved a ton, I didn’t mention that because it wasn’t the topic of discussion…

Someone tell me how to feel about this. Always felt that Hyman was underappreciated in Toronto but this contract seems excessive no?

People overreacting because it's the Oilers of course

Every UFA this year is gonna cost a lot. See Blake Coleman, Barclay Goodrow etc

Goodrow is, and Coleman will be, a bad deal as well. Has nothing to do with the Oilers.

Edit: Oh hey, Coleman signed as well. Missed the news. 6 years for a guy who has never eclipsed 40 points.

Ok... thanks for a more balanced discussion.

Disagree on #1... he's an NHL defensemen, though I'm still hoping it isn't confirmed as rumored at $3M and we go with someone else.
2) Keith is going to be fine on the 2nd pair IMO, but we'll see. He certainly won't be as sheltered if he's playing with Ceci
5) what do you mean it isn't the topic of discussion... you are posting in the Hyman thread!!!

No more seeing Kassian in the top 2 lines. Celebration.

And the Leafs didn't get the 2nd round puck they wanted for the sign and trade, and the 8th year. Oil offered a 6th ?

Oilers fans will like Hyman this season and the next. I'd love him back at that price for those two years. I imagine the reason Toronto didn't offer a comparable was because of the term, which obviously can be problematic with workhorse players. Still, he has a knack for making the players around him play to their full potential and if he can stay healthy should help with the depth issues on the roster before his inevitable decline.

People use this argument every year. UFAs cost loads every year, that's why it's almost always a bad idea to buy in FA. It's not a defence.

Excessive yes - the true test will be; at his current cap hit (and playing in a scrutinized market) will Hyman be able to play 'his game' which can include cold spells/injuries/ etc.

To me he's always been a great soldier, utility player and guy you can go to for any assignment. He's now going to be expected to justify his contract , on the top line.

I think he has it in him - but some injury question marks for sure.

If Zach's body holds up and is a key cog to Edm finding a winning identity...who cares about the contract being too long and overpaid.
