I wonder what info he got over the summer

There’s only one that matters. “We’re both extending right? Ok cool”

A distinguishing factor with McDavid is he makes about $8M per year from endorsements off the ice that Leon doesn't get. McDavid has more latitude to take less money on his NHL deal because he has large income streams coming in from elsewhere.

True. But McDavid’s always made it pretty clear he values winning above anything else

Agreed. Never understood these idiots that come to another teams board.

And what are they even chirping about? "hahaha you signed one of the greatest players in the world to an 8 year contract and our man-purse wearing captain only signed for 4 years"

lol like nice flex leafs fans. 1967!
1967 was a great year--the debut albums for Jimi Hendrix and the Doors and of course Sgt. Pepper.

A lot of guys on the board are saying...hey what...who is this dude talking about? Yup, 1967 was a while ago.

I’d guess McDavid is only 14.5-15.0. He already took less once. He’ll get the biggest contract in the league and still be underpaid
I don't think NHLPA will allow this. Anything less than 15M will be insulting to arguably the best player league has seen in generations. Draisaitl is not his comparable. McDavid is a tier above the rest.
16M instead of league max would be a nice discount from his side

It's fine and good news but I don't love this from either side. Would have hoped that as a former agent used to negotiating complex deals that JJ could have made some deferred money magic happen, and I am not thrilled Leon chose to go over 13 given how much every dollar counts. His quality of life would be the same at 12.5 a year vs. 14 while helping the team remain competitive. Still nice to have him for eight more years but it's not the home run it could've been.

Draisaitl just signed the highest AAV in league history, and McDavid will break it next summer. Why would the NHLPA have any objection?

Because McD will be setting the bar too low if he signs for less than 15Mper. Drai isn't a factor. He could've signed for 11M per and NHLPA wouldn't have cared.

You're right on this. His quality of life will be the same at 12.5 or at 14M. But that 1.5M would go a long way to helping the team. If both McDavid and Drai agreed to take 14M each like Toews and Kane did even tho Kane was the far better player at the time, then it evens out.

Why are you getting personal and resorting to insults? Enjoy the great team you have, we’ll enjoy ours.
Reminder...you're on HF Oil. No one invited you here for your backhanded faux "congrats". Maybe stick to the mains if you're going to get insulted when approaching us that way and we clap back?

He outperformed that last contract. But at the time he didn't take a discount

While I'm happy Draisaitl was extended. Players take the biggest AVV in the league when they've already won the cup or multiple times otherwise you could just end up like the Maple Leafs.

You said he's more likely to take an identical contract than league max. I'm interested to know why you think that. He's already proven he's worth as much as he wants.
League max is like $19m when McDavid's new contract kicks in, him getting that is as realistic as those who think that he'll take the Draisaitl $14m deal. He'll likely come in at around $16m/yr and that'll be a discount because it's well below max.
