For people harping about term:

Shane Doan - 39 year old season 28 goals
Keith Tkachuk - 36 year old season 25 goals
Bill Guerin - 39 year old season (retirement) 21 goals, 9 points in 11 playoff games; scored 20+ in his last 4 years playing

These guys are more comparable to Lucic than David Clarkson.

This is a FANTASTIC SIGNING for the Oilers and I have absolutely no worries about 7 year team. It's actually wonderful to have a player of Lucic's quality signed until he's 35. He's going to get 20-30 goals like clockwork playing with McDavid or Draisaitl. Turning point week for the Oilers franchise.

That's not how these things go. Still can't be waved in those last two years (or any other movement); the only thing that changes is tradability. And the signing bonuses situation might make it a little awkward to buy him out.

That's bad. That's really bad.

Pretty sure I didn't say anything about waiving and buyouts. Pretty sure I mentioned that he has an opening to trade him after 5 years if he trails off. Pretty sure I stated a decent argument suggesting that many big contracts get traded, even with players who don't play anymore (Pronger, Datsyuk, etc etc).

Most people expected something of a NM/NT part of his contract. He's just signed a deal that will probably be his last, he wanted some control about where he wanted to go. And you know what? It also shows that highly sought after UFA's WANT to stay with Edmonton.

It's a big contract, I give you that. But as an Oiler fan I'm very happy about it.

oh dear holy g-d.

And folks complain about the Hartnell contract? That's... not good. Not good at all.

Hartnell, 28-29: 82 GP, 49 pts
Hartnell, 30-31: 82 GP, 67 pts
Hartnell, 31-32: 78 GP, 50 pts
Hartnell, 32-33: 77 GP, 60 pts
Hartnell, 33-34: 79 GP, 49 pts

If that's the 'worst' Lucic does in the crucial first years of his new deal, I can easily live with it. I expect 10%+ production solely on the basis of Lucic being a better player offensively and perhaps an extra 10% thanks to McDavid. Years of 58, 80, 60, 70, and 58 points would be right on the money.

Eriksson is a better player than Lucic ever was

Debatable, but Lucic is a better fit for the Oilers needs. More intimidating/physical player with Stanley Cup experience on the LW who is solid on both ends of the ice is more of a net presence than Eriksson's play style.

Bill Guerin is a horrendous comparison. Jesus.

He played a far different game, in a different era, and was a far better goal scorer, with a far better shot, and far better hockey IQ.

Yeah and I'm sure he's ECSTATIC not playing in a city that harassed, threatened him and his family. And also a team that is going NOWHERE anytime soon.

Talk to me when you make the playoffs within the next decade the Canucks only missed last season. Well see who's the better team next season. The oilers are still in ****** shape lol.

It's hilarious to see all the oilers haters come out in full force. This is an awesome signing. So much salt in here. I'm cracking up.

This is a great signing.

Lucic is a winner, he's tough as they come and he is exactly what Edmonton needs. If they can add a #1-2 defenseman, they will be contenders.
