Perfect job as always, Chiarelli!

I thought it was a great deal.

Lucic is a the kind of player the Oilers are lacking. Big rugged power forward. Hes just turned 28 so his prime years will be 28,29,30,31 . True 32 33 34 will be tough years to swallow the 6mil per year but hopefully he will still be able to hold the second line.

Sure, 6mil for 4 years would have been ideal but he never would have signed anywhere for that.

Most of the money is bonus money which makes it easy to trade him the past couple years to a cap floor team.

And the NMC ends after year 5 (albeit to a limited No Trade), which shows that Chiarelli likely understands that Lucic might begin to trail off around there and has a small opening to trade if need be.

As we've seen, even players who aren't playing hockey still get traded when they have big contracts.

There's been like 3-4 other contracts signed today that could easily be as bad in 2 years.

The bonus structure and NMC/NTC make it a real nasty deal should his skills tank

It is buyout proof and he is not going to waive to go to a team needing to get to the floor.

But nobody knows where the cap will be in 4 years, etc..

Its a good deal short term, thats all Oiler fans need to worry about.

This reminds me so much of what the Leafs said when they gave Clarkson the worst contract in NHL history. "The Habs and Oilers were offering even more than us, so surely David is a bargain"

It really shouldn't. Clarkson was never even half the player Lucic is. Clarkson had 1 season that was anywhere near Lucic's worst season in the last 6 years.

They would've been a better team regardless. With a fully healthy McDavid and Klefbom (and RNH), Draisaitl taking another step, Talbot not crapping the bed the few first months of the season.

C'mon. Edmonton needed to make changes to get better. That was a roster with a lot of talent, but also a lot of holes/problems. They're addressing those issues with the moves they've made so far this off-season. I think next season will be the best one the Oilers have had in a long time.

Yeah but trade value is also important when making a trade. I see hall as way more valuable then Larsson

I don't. I see a team who desperately needed stability back there. Bottom 10 and close to bottom 5 offensive team with Hall. A team who has other scoring options.

Lucic's already as slow as a slowth, should be as slow as a snail by the time that contracts up tho

McDavid and Puljujarvi are fast enough, they need someone to look after them and create space/crash the net.

That's not how these things go. Still can't be waved in those last two years (or any other movement); the only thing that changes is tradability. And the signing bonuses situation might make it a little awkward to buy him out.

That's bad. That's really bad.

Everyone does. That's not the point.

The point is that Edmonton needed to do something about the defense. And in order to make that happen, he needed to give up Hall.

Well to be fair.. that is not saying all that much...

Chiareli and Benning fighting for worst GM in the league. Just crazy how bad these contracts are.

Not really. He'll be 34 not 39, remember?

Not that bad at all.

Pretty sure that's not how a NTC works (the waiver part).

Regardless I'd rather have Lucic than Eriksson for 6 years, but 2 years older. Even Brouwer at 4.5 ... he's three years older than Lucic and Lucic is the better player IMO.
