The seven year deal and $42 million which was a year longer than anyone else would give also was probably a small factor.

Maybe you're right, maybe you're not. All I know is Ladd just got signed until he's 37 at a slightly lower AAV so if teams were willing to pay that I find it hard to believe that no one was willing to give Lucic 7 other than us.

Also 2/4 of his last seasons were <1st line production.

Which matches most of his career - those two 1st line production seasons are his only ones.

I wouldn't have been happy with this contract on my team, but it's not as though he's on a severe downward trend or something.

The guy is 27 for goodness sake. People are worrying about term over nothing.

Welcome to Edmonton Lucic! You will fit in just great here.

27 going on 29 with all that mileage. Backes and Ladd are in the same boat, though.

He's breaking down!

*Missed maybe 8-10 games int he past 5-6 years* A few were from his suspension.

At least he ain't 31 with consussion history signing a 6 year deal at the same term *cough Eriksson*

I don't know of too many of these long long term deals that are not viewed as being bad after a few years. Teams find a way to get out from under neath them one way or another.

He'll be 34 at the end of his final season. Not. That. Old

Mike Richards was 29 when he started to break down. Dustin Brown was 30.

These kinds of players break down instantly and without notice. Lucic was not the same player in LA that he was in Boston. He's already regressing. If Dean thought he was worth the term, he'd be a King. Thankfully, Dean is smarter than that.

This is certainly not a good contract lol

At least that shows that even they think he might decline in the last two years. It's a gamble but right now Lucic is in his prime and about to play with McDavid, he should be fine for the first 3-4 years.

Even without Hall the Oilers still have an embarrassment of riches up front now.

McDavid-Draisaitl-RNH down the middle with wingers like Lucic, Eberle, Maroon, Pouliot, Yakupov (reclamation time?), and Puljujarvi coming in.

Larsson makes the D a lot better and Klefbom being back will help a lot.

They are most definitely a better team, I loved Hall but you simply can't win a lot of games with a bunch of flashy forwards who play off the rush and no balance. If it was the 80s/early 90s sure (which is a shame IMO), but not anymore.

The Oilers now are much more balanced, bigger, and far tougher to play against the current Pacific division.

They are probably going to have to ship that Lucic contract out for the last year or two to a cap ceiling team, that said Hall is only 3 years younger than Lucic.
